ROUND 2 MATCHES ARE:
1. Ikuru vs JL Alfaro
Ikuru's Entry:
"Krishna Vs Monkey King"
Sun Wukong allso known as the The Monkey King was a normal monkey to begin with, but he went on a quest to find immortality and so he did. Becoming a great Buddhist God eventually.
He went on a journey to India, to retrieve Buddhist sutras. On this journey it so happened that one day he encountered Lord Krishna. It apeard to the Monkey that the Krishna was something of a smartass.
So he decided to teach him a lesson... "You might be Blue, but you bleed red like the rest of us bitch!", is what he said that day.
Soon enough he accomplised his mission and returning safely to China. Where he was granted Buddhahood, for his service and strength.

4. Masque vs Ostrander vs kboss
Masque's entry:
She found him on the field of battle, in the thin fog and damp grey stillness of the morning, still clinging weakly to life amid the mire and blood and remains of his foes. She gathered him into her arms, held him as she often did beside their hearth.
He had been a good husband, a good father, but a magnificent warrior. Five enemies dead at his hand; Father Wotan must surely reward such valor! Surely he would send a Valkyrie for this man she loved, that he may live on in glorious Valhalla!
She felt his last breath, passing over and through her like the clean, clear breezes of the fjords, but, strangely, with a tang of regret, that pulled at her heart like nothing ever had, and might never again.

Kboss's Entry:
This piece is of Nemesis, Greek goddess of divine retribution, fighting the Persians as they try and enter Athens. Taken from contemporary myth.

After that, he must be set free for a short time."

Well, I was thinking about doing a new piece for this round, and now I know my competition I think that's definately on the cards. Masque's Valkyrie entry is pretty kickass.
Bah, just landed a very labour intensive project in March too. Ho-hum, half-arsed artwork ahoy! (i'll still kick your asses you pair of reprobates)

My concept for the depiction of my God is to save the file at huge dimensions, say 200,000 by 200,000 pixels, so that no matter how hard you try you can never actually see Him. My entry will be solely faith-based, just like a real life belief in God! That way you'll never guess that all I did was scan my big white ass.

I'll try to do some traditional shit here, but if worse comes to worse I might have to use my round one entry. Shoot me a pm, we'll figure something out...

Funny story... remember that time my computer completely died and left me completely f'd up my hoohah? Man it seems like it was just yesterday! Oh wait, that's because it just fucking did happen yesterday.
Talked to min already, I still owe him a td piece even if it's outside this dome. I've never pussed out of a td but circumstances leave me no choice right now, sorry fellas and fellettes.

wow
i MAY have to puss on this now
i spent the last 5 days in the hospital and could have died had i waited before going to the emergency room another day or so
i had a case of accute pancreatitis and its an affliction i would not wish on my worst enemy the first 4 days i was not allowed to eat as that would only enhance the pain
on a 1 to 10 this was a 15 as far as pain goes
i will try to do something but unless time stops in the next 3 days i dont see it being definite i am very weak
very tired and very behind in my freelance
i can only go a few hours without a nap right now
i can NEVER drink alcohol again and i have to maintain a strict diet
this lil competition may be too much on top of all that
i apologise for this being so late but i just got home late last night
and im being realistic
so ill try but
i almost died so i think my time may be a bit too precious for this lil tdome
thanks folks its been fun hope to see you at the finish line but i may be too weak

Seems a bit daft that some may advance by default while two people are going to get knocked out of my group (Masque and Ostrander, those two people are you if I was being too subtle...)

Woop!
Its on.
Felicia, Nice rework. My favourite guy is the first horsman right infront of the tree. He is great. Think a couple of the skeletons on the right are too bright to be rendered so crudely, but overall great improvements.... guess we'll just have to wait and see aye? You girl you :P
yadam - love the city and the concept. Really cool piece. Instantly though, I just wonder about the poses. The guy with the sword, I really dont buy that he's following through on a massive swing hard enough to completely take someones head off! He'd need his whole body behind a stroke like that. But that aside, cool piece :)
Its cool seeing all the updates, along with all the new pieces. Im glad we both did updates Felicia, it would be a weird contest between a fresh piece and a rework.
Goodluck everyone except felicia ;)
haha. c'mon, you know i love ya honey
Thanks to JLA for organising a great contest. I think I've got a portfolio piece outta this one. It pushed me to learn.

Masque I LUUB yours. Really nice elegant piece.
Ikuru, classic! haha. I was once a regular attendant of our local Hari Krishna yoga class. When you are a student, a yoga class that comes with a free meal is the way to go :P after going for a while I became interested in the whole Krishna thing so I bought one of those books they sell in the street. I was amazed! I couldnt believe it! Theres all these illustrations all the way through of Krishna cutting off heads with his magic slicing disc, and monkey gods with pants on, and Krishna on his Eagle-man, with his woman on the back, throwing spears at demons! I was like woooah! Thats some crazy shit! And the story I read was "this guy has a flower that produces sacks of gold. Krishna said give it to me. The guy said no. So krishna cut of his head because he was not pious". I dont know how they worship it. Its weirder than the bible, which (especially in the old testament) is a pretty bizarre book to worship... Though at least Krisha kicks ass a lot - dragon ball z styles :P ha. nice job man

Actually I like the graphic look of Krishna and the Monkey King allot! The Monkey King is such a cool character, when I was like verry young they showed a cartoon with him on my telly, It was a kind of manga that looked like a old school platform kung fu game, that monkey was like all over the place. Anyhow, thanx man.

Mr Grumble, looking good man!
So much good touch ups around here! Love the touchup on Bloodstones (you did some great work on the forrest etc) for example, will will comment on everything once this thread is sorted.

Thanks but, it is digital. whatever was originally oil was painted over digitally. completely. I did rework the piece. i repainted most of Morrigan and a guy in the foreground (which i am taking out).
I'm glad to hear that your working hard over there. Being in complete control of your edges is something very hard to master. Knowing where to put focus or soften an edge is an art all by itself. I'm sure we can talk for days about the value of edges but I'll just leave this link that Elwell made. It is very informative.

=\ sorry about my crap eyesore of an image -
I just have some bones to pick w/ all of this. first of all - reposting an image? please give the other artist some respect. I would rather forfeit myself than waste my time against an old image - or even a new one that is just a quota filler. I was busy as hell the whole month but still put forth effort to throw something new out there. Reworking an image is great and I know in Trevor's case the exception is legit - not only that but the image rocks - beside the point.
Putting people's old images into the competition (for round 2 in this case) even when they have not only not done something new, but probably don't even know that round 2 is over? are you serious? That right there should be an outright D/Q.
do I want to go to round 3? not if it means going up against an unfinished round 1 image and losing to it.
I pushed myself and failed to reach my own deadlines. but that's the breaks.
- end rant

xzacto, i gotta say i agree with your point, although perhaps not the way you stated it.
but its fair for you to want to go up against a new piece since you spent the time to create another. i know i didnt even touch my old one and personally i dont deny the fact that i hate myself for it.
feel free to talk to jlalfaro if you want to go up against flimi, my opponent, he took the time to create yet another amazing piece that deserves much better than my same unfinished load.
im not about to make excuses as to why i dont have a new piece, but trust me they are there :)

xzacto - I would actually consider that an advantage because you know what you are up against. As long as you do something better, you'll be fine. Besides, its not like the prize is a $5,000 computer or a new car. In the end, you'll get more out of this than the people who posted the same image.

do I want to go to round 3? not if it means going up against an unfinished round 1 image and losing to it.
Im fully with you on this.
Not that I care (like I said) weather I "win" or "lose", I did put in some 30h on my peace and reached what I was aiming for... Allso since JLA said there will be no round three...
But yeah, the way this thread has been (same people posting the whole way through, you would think allot of people actually dont even know/care round 2 was on.
About getting crit from anyone, I would love it (like everyone else I supose), so far the only crit I got was "ikuru painting tech is good, but its not very exciting to look at" real constructive.
For some reason this thread felt a bit Dead to begin with (compared to the first thread, not to mention to the Neard TD), and that feeling did not really change when the work was done. I dont know why, but thats the way It looks to me.

Too true, this boys simply havent got the vocabulary to slay one another like you ladies do.
The art is on page one if you havent seen it, (I think it should say so in the head of the thread)
GriNGoLoCo, You bet, it could be less (25+...) I know I spent like 9 hours on the mountins allone. Itīs the price you pay for beeing a noob and a perfectionist at the same time I guess, But I feel I learned allot from the process and thats what matters to me...
Makes me able to do things fast too.
Like the chow I got runing right now... made that (so far) in 45min.

For my own part, in a competition to draw a god fighting another god, a titan, or an army I was defeated by a drawing of a mortal creature (Pegasus) running away from a monster.:\ I had grimly resolved to have nothing further to do with the competition, or any other competition in which the judges have not sworn a blood oath to actually give a damn about the rules.
I had to break radio silence, though, to wish Trevor well. There are some things that transcend sulking.
Same drawing=OK was part of the rules, by the way.

Sorry you feel that way homey. I did not vote solely on such I voted with a mixture of the topic Gods at War and technique + execution. In my opinion the latter is more important than the former. I personally do not enjoy entering competitions because I do not find they prompt progress nor do they leave me with a 'warm and fuzzy' feeling. At the risk of sounding rude - something I try to avoid at all costs - get over it and continue to progress. Don't let an informal contest meant only for fun and learning get in your way, that would be foolish.
I'll see if I can hit you all up with crits later today.

Nerdlinger, you make me giggle like a schoolgirl :)
xzacto - I can kinda understand where you're coming from but I think you are completely missing the spirit of the Thunderdome. The point, imho, is to level up. The pairing against another artist is just to motivate you a bit more to work hard so that you beat them, as opposed to a normal challenge where the only motivation is the prize, and the noobs just arent going to win that. So if you are paired up against an artist who can bust out a winning image in a day, sheesh. That sucks, but hey, there's always going to be someone who can draw better and work faster. Thats just life, work harder. If that gets you down in the thunderdome, then I daresay you dont have the right attitude to make it as an illustrator. Its a competitive field.
At the end of the day you win if you learned and leveled up. Maybe you got a portfolio piece out of it. If m@, jason chan etc had entered this TD, then theyd all be winning with their round one image unedited, and I wouldnta made it to round 2. It isnt an offence against you because they didnt respect you enough to do a new image. They put in all the hard yards to get as good as they are somewhere along the line. It doesnt happen by accident. And they deserve your respect for that. Bumskee works his ass off, go look at his sketchbook threads here and on cgtalk. He works harder at it than I do, I can openly admit.
Sorry if that came out as a rant. I just find it frustrating that everytime there is a challenge like this, or the big challenges on cgtalk, theres always some sour grapes. Trash talking is cool, but this community is meant to be about support and learning which I think it is amazing for. So lets try and keep it that way.
Ikuru, I konw the thread has been quiet. At least your voice was echoing around :)
Thats enough ranting for me. onto some criting for helpfulness:

Okey dokey, heres some criting joy. cant do everyone today. Gotta find a birthday present for the gf's dad, always a tricky ask...
Ikuru. Really nice piece. I can see the work you've put in and respect for that. Theres a few things I'd want to change tho. FOr a start your aerial perspective. You have the mountains receding, bu tthe far side of the lake need some aerial perspective on it too I think, to show it is quite far away. I really think that would sell the depth a lot better. Also the tree arching over the top seems to grow out of the far side of the lake kinda... do ya get me? I think you need an overlapping line there to make the tree fg but retain that nice curve. The reflection in the water being so crisp bugs me too, I think even if you want it looking super still, it needs some ripples, around the boat especially. And maybe some kind of blur/distortion on it. The edges of your mountains refelcted off the water are just as crisp, if not as bold as your fg shapes, which really kills the depth of the image. However rippled surface textures receding in space would sell it way more. And the sail of your boat in the reflection is see through..? Also the blood spraying from krishna's severed head seems a bit crisp if it is moving so fast as to be gushing so much when the swing is still following through.. Maybe either a directional blur, or make some splatters on an angle on paper and scan them in?
Great piece of work tho. Be proud :)

I really learned alot from this contest overall. I feel so much better about painting than I ever have before in my whole life. To bad there's not a third round. Everyone did awesome work, good job everyone!

Some of the entries were a bit off, but I must say that the judges had some tuff decisions to make and it was decided unanimously. Just remember arttorney, your entry was not the only one left behind. Those are the risks of competing.
In any case, if you feel as though you can take The Artist Fox on, ask him for a rematch on the next TD.
which brings me to the next comment...
Nerd- I got something in the works for another TD, involving sideshow freaks, gypsies, ringleaders...etc, but thats not until next month or so...maybe.

Cavematty Thank you for a verry insightfull crit there bro.
"the far side of the lake need some aerial perspective on it too I think" this part I'm not so sure I get what your saying I should do... Maybe it's my english... I get the thing with the tree, And I think your probably right, like you say I focused on framing the sky with that arch bu a sort of line to divide would probably be in place.
About the reflection, I looked at so much ref for this, and yeah you are right about the blurness of the mountin edges etc, most of the time the edge of things is blured, I tried this, but I did not like the look of it, so in the end I just said fuck it, thinking it did not matter if it was realistic as loong as it looked good, I tried doing some waves etc behind the boat too, but you can hardly see it, enough exuces, I just had to leave it in the end, since nothing I fidled with looked too good.
the sail is obviously just a error, (damn)... ;)
Yeah about the blood, your probably right, ading some blur would help capture more speed etc. Over all that is my main concern with the whole thing that the ennergy comes out a bit stiff compared to some speedpainting I did on this, but I guess thats just the way it is...
My main goal was to do a semirealistic painting that looked like a Japanese print, (cherryblossoms, mount fuji, the boat, the frame etc) and I like how that came out.
About the monkeys necklace its suposed to be the roster from tha CA.org logo, but you can hardly see it.. ;) Thanks again for the help on this.

yeah true about lack of warm and fuzzy feeling, wonder why that is, they sort of leave you feeling a bit empty and overworked, well not the small ones like cow, I think the key is learning to do it for the fun of it, without considering it too much I guess. would love to get some crit too btw.

Ikuru: I think it's too much thought put into winning, too much stress and frustration. Not a healthy learning situation in my opinion. I do thing they are good practice for working professionally however.
Tried to get a few crits out, more later. I do hope I don't come off as being a dick - I can't manage my words as well as I can with so many entries! @_@
Ikuru: Great! I love the asian influences - looks nice and fits appropriately with your choice in gods. I wish the middleground mountains were less outlined, but I suppose that's a stylistic choice. I'm not too sure about your reflections especially of the tree up front. I at first thought it was another tree? The perpsective of the the figures doesn't match with the path nor the rest of the scene. I would expect to be looking quite a bit more down at them you know? Ok, haha don't mean to be harsh or anything - awesome job and definetly hits the topic - great blood splatter too hehe!
JLAlfaro: Absolutely love the goddess, that pose is so badass and the hovering orb works so well with it. Maybe tone the saturation down a bit on the arms, get them to harmonize just a bit. Also the blue light on her I would expect to be higher in value and less blue - the hue you have now either says she is really shiny or her skin is actually white. I'm not keen on the smeary paint towards the bottom. I think the figures you have while very emotive and expressive especially in their gestures are a bit iconic or drawn still in symbols. Ambition is great but I would have rather seen you focus on the goddess and one victim perhaps. Anyways, well done man - making much progress.
Bumskee: I was looking forward to seeing a new piece from you mate :P Liked your sketch too!
strych9ine: Same! Wanted so much to see a new piece :P hehe, understandable though.
gringoloco: Real nice motion going on. Could use some clean up on shapes, edges and brushstrokes etc. Skull feels a bit flat and symbolic perhaps. Feels a bit odd to see just that tiny hint of brown on the (flag?) but nowhere else.
theartistfox: hahah bizarre subject. Paint feels a little too mushed together, too much blending or resat is too low in painter perhaps. I think your colors, though they work fairly realistically are as descriptive as they should or could be for an illustration. It feels more like the fog was added to cover things up you know? Some of your exterior edges, most notably on hercules's arms could use some softening to round them out.
Masque: This was one of the harder rounds to judge for me. Your is remarkably well executed, really wonderful. I'm not too keen on the placement of the face in the sky and I think the quanity of the strokes makes it a bit busy or distracting. But what do I know hehe.
K'boss: Like I said above, hard hard match to judge. Bloody awesome rendering and colors. Nice concept too. I will say the figure seems a bit out of place - perhaps not the most descriptive pose especially for the topic. I like the idea of her being relaxed, but she doesn't feel connected with the scene is what I'm trying to say. Some of the figures and the skeletons feel a bit more symbolic versus real compared to her perhaps? Awesome entry :)
Ostrander: To repeat from above, this was a really hard match to judge. Glen I have to say you captured the Gods at war part so damn well! Love the detail and composition. I get a bit of a spacial distortion with the foremost waves and where the boat should be, not sure how to fix that sorry :(. Some of the strokes and edges could maybe be defined a little more, it feels a bit soft or smudged in parts. I would have loved to see this in color and think if you have any steam left you should round it out for you portfolio dood. Cheers!

Idiot Your a cool dude, thank you for your accurate crit, about the treereflection etc, ofcourse I do not have a clue if it would work like that, since I have no ref of that, and yes I did have a photo ref for the characters (Yeah I know the real monkey king) and allthough I did make a onepoint perspective for the backdrop, the caracters where allredy done and rendered.
Im impressed that you'd actually see that, it did not cross my mind I think.
(would love to see that in a tut from you, how you use perspective in your landscape).
thankx for taking the time.
