what experience does everyone have with signing an NDA? I understand its pretty common practice now but I just received one stating that if the agreement is breached i would be liable for 1 million dollars? is it just me or does that sound ridiculous? is an NDA supposed to specify what the terms of a violation are? this is for a simple pretty low paying job and while i know it would never come to this, i dont feel comfortable signing something that says that.

I am NOT a lawyer. . . but a number that specific in a contract sounds A. fishy, and B. unenforceable.

This is a bit risky, but if the job otherwise looks really good, you could cross out that line and initial it on the contract. They may object, or they may shrug it off.
