This is one of the backround concepts for the project, Mutineers Moon. I'm currently finishing this up...I'm closing in on different parts of this, crispening the edges and clearifying some of the shapes more. When I'm done I'm considering this to be a sketch/final because I wasn't very concerned with getting the perspective totally exact, I was more concerned with presenting the idea of a section to this city. Feel free to give any crits.....

Here is a close up.....it's still pretty messy so I'm deciding what parts are important to close in and clearify. The next backround I do I plan to make the concept as precise as possible by making sure the perspective and shapes are correct, and making my colors not so muddy.

it looks pretty sweet already, !! i love the travelways coming into shot and the tonal values.
Not like im really qualified to crit this but i cant help wishing the city extended to the left with some foreground architechture to balance and frame the pic.

very nice chris
the spot lights under the overpass could be better--especially towards teh far right where they seem to become a part of teh architecture
i guess it could just use some more tightenin up--since its all architecture
good job

Very ambitious image, Chris. I don't think the 'muddy' colors are much of a detraction--it just gives the city a sort of smoggy and polluted look, which I would expect from a city of the future.
Some criticisms I have regard the architecture, mainly the building connected to the roads. The shapes you have in relief and the windows don't really make sense to me. The windows and such seem sort of arbitrary, rather than having the impression of being designed or drafted by an architect.
The impressions of the buildings in the background look more convincing and 'designed'.
In my opinion, something well designed looks more futuristic as opposed to having a rectangle and adding all sorts of decoration and this sort of shattered geometry--this is something I see a lot of in web design.
The rendering and atmosphere are spot on, though, and considering this is a sketch, I'd challenge you to think through your final designs in more detail.
I have no idea what 'Mutineer's Moon' is, but I'm excited about all the good work being produced and shown for that project.

Very appealing. Blackhand has some interesting points, but sometimes it just has to look cool! As you tighten it up, some clarification as to the function of things would make it more compelling. Are those roof structures cooling units? Broadcast/reception power tranfer units? Docking structures? That kind of specification of function makes a cool shape become a place where people (and robots, hopefully:)) live and work. My only overall crit is to solidfy the angles on those highway supports- the middle one looks a little shakey. Sweet! I can see Chadthx1138's (sp?) scooters flying through the scene...:)

Hey all,
Thanks for all the crits, I'm glad you guys like the painting so far.
Dodge.........Yeah, after I looked at this image a while from far away I realized that it there was something off about the design, because of the heavy dark bridge on the right. There's no heavy dark shapes on the left to balance it out. In my next backround I'll make sure I keep that in mind.
Backhand.......I agree with you on the windows in the main building. They are arbitrary rather than looking like it was designed and drafted by an architect. But I have a theory to make the windows look more realistic and believable. I'm gonna try that out in my next backround painting, which will be more of a tightly finished final than this more sketchy image. I never actually done a backround as tight as I'm planning, but, I learned something interesting the other day about good ways of approaching that. So will see what happens.
Chukw..........Yeah, the roof structures are cooling units but some are small towers with people in them that serve specific purposes. I agree about if I tighten the shapes up more that things will be more clearified. I may just work on the next backround and really tightening that just to try out this other technique I want to try, and then go back to this image and apply the same method. I'm gonna fix the shakey pillar you pointed out. And yeah, it would be cool to see Chads mechs flying through the scene.
Again, thanks for all the replies and crits.
