In light of the recent revival of all that is swashbuckling and dangerous, all I have to say is YEEeearre, and
enjoy this pic that was very fun to paint, trying to capture a personality and
expression of "What...take me on....hah!!", a type of character that is
both a good leader, yet highly dangerous, a painting that explores a new
technique for me, and crits and comments are welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks, and enjoy!

there are some very interesting areas in the piece, especially in the way you have set up a very live atmosphere.
however, there are several issues you should rectify within the character pose. the legs shouldn't be so close from one another, it gives to the body a very unstable balance that is disturbing for the whole image. in order to rectify this problem, you should analyse your perspective, in order to find a better position for the back leg. try raising it a bit. it will also add to the composition, and break up the character verticality or stiffness. head size and back hand are two other areas that you might want to check too.
finding the right perspective is quite complex while working on environment or backgrounds, and we sometimes forget that characters should obey to the same perspective rules as the environment in which they are located.
the best area according to me is the white skirt and upper body details. lots of rich tones and perfect lighting.
you have succeeded in rendering a great piece, but there are still details that you should develop to obtain something perfect. it remains a great effort, and you're right to be happy about it. keep it up.

Nice work on the sunset lighting on the character. His feet placement and the ambiguity of the edges on the wooden decorations are the only thing that really bother me visually. Also, the back portion of the ship seems unfinished. His hands look great, rendering of the white shirt and head is great. I think if he was placed on the ship a little differently like Sparth said, the piece would definitely read better. Nice job! "AAAAarGghH" :chug:

I agree kimchee. Thank you very much Sparth. An excellent critique. I will certainly address those issues and see about some options with the pose, before filing this one away.
I left the back of the ship a bit unworked, to keep attention on the character, but perhaps it's a bit too unfinished. I'll try adding some detail back there, see what it looks like. Thanks jmascho.

nice piece....just a few things that I noticed that might help.
The head seems a little too big for the body...great job on the background.....the legs seem to close together which make it look a little akward....but good piece.
