So...what do you think of her face? (I made it up myself - I'm so proud! lol) - Trying to break from overuse of photo ref - anyone think she looks like a 'real' person? - it's hard to be objective...

The face has got to be what you put all your focus in to. The colors look really clean, compared to the slightly more blurry neck and chest.

It's an amazing peice in my opinion. ^_^

I freakin love this! :D

The face is great, and so is everything else.

those colors make her look so yummy!

Her face doesn't look "real" in the sense that it's a bit stylized... but what style! I love it, especially the way you handled the light on her blouse and body. Pretty colors!

Edit: Wait, WTF is this doing in the sketch section? That looks like a finished piece to me!

i think the right breast might be a bit small when compared to the left. great picture over all!

I like that piece.

In my opinion the contrast of the light is a bit to extreme, kind of hurts the eye. But that might be my personal preferance.

But what is going on with her left eye? it looks as if it was staring in completely different direction!
That breast-thing has allready been mentioned, but other than that, itīs a good picture.

keep it up!

Good comments ppl. thx.

Tedsuo - style is cool - wish I had more - still striving to have give it charcter but also look like a real human, not a comic book - sort of a fine line I will find some day.

Pencil - good point, way to watch the boobies. Thanx.

Ant4D - hmm...wish I could make people say that on purpose. How do you mean "Good/Strange" and how do we make it happen? I have a theory with this one that it's to do with the full frontal face, and the contraposto (twisted) torso...it's kind of egyptian in a way....

el kyrre - thank. will fix the eyes. good catch.

thx all.

the light and value on this are really cool, as far as the face, I would just say that less is more, maybe tone down the nose.

small PO to illustrate, sorry its crappy, only have a mouse :(

Also, everything is so finely rendered but her chest where the skin is showing and also the neck seem unfinished.

love this piece, hope this helps.

I love the colors and the lighting, and the outfit on this piece, but I gotta say I'm having a little bit of trouble with the face....I'm not saying it's bad, but the left eye seems a little bigger than the rigth one... other than that....it's great! and I want to see more!!!

Sweeet! :yummy:

To answer your questions: Love the face! Agree that while it's realistic I wouldn't call it a real-person look, it's just too perfect to be real, but that's not a bad thing.

Marc-

I am very impressed by your lighting and costume design.....

The face is very nice, but I agree with Landmate in that the nose seems a little too chiseled.

But, again, your color and lighting is SO dynamic, the character literally looks like she's going to jump off the screen.... great work.

Great piece. I also think the right eye is too wide. The nose looks strange with hightlights on both sides. To me, the lighting in general looks a bit ambiguous; you have highlights on opposite sides, and the highlight line around her chin doesn't seem to fit. But overall, it looks very appealing. I really like all the detail in her drapery and her equipment/weapons.

great crit - this forum rocks - everyone is right about the eyes, the nose highlights - the anatomy - great feedback - I'm hoping to get a chance to touch things up based on all this...

Jeff - you are absotively right about the lighting - I'm sort of into a kind of 'design based lighting' where there are magical little spotlights just where they need to be to separate the forms - it can adversley affect the realism - but I hope it also defines the shapes and edges....this girl has baby spots pointing at her from all directions! - lol

(*insert random opinion here - I like to think that part of the validity of illustration over 3D is that we have per pixel control over lighting and design (and of course it's much faster to complete a still image) - where the 3D artists have dommination over realistic surface qualities, transparency, reflection, anatomy, perspective, repeating shapes, mechanical forms, animation on an on (it's demoralizing to think of all the reasons 3D is better lol) - really 3D rocks except for the humongus time investment to get the model made in the first place - and that will probably get faster over time...)

...we should have an NWN portrait thread going here...could be fun...you ever do any custom pics for your party? Post 'em here if you got'em....

hey marc--this piece is fantastic! I love how the two blades on her leg draw the eye. the background is really compelling as well

heres four portraits i did for NWN: shadows of undrentide. It was my first game job, i did over 150 items, spells, feat (etc) icons too. I was working for floodgate entertainment, and they were working with bioware.

Again awesome work, i really love that elf girl with the green magic BG, hope to see you posting here more in the future!!--tyler

i created this weird way of simulating cloth by taking digital photos of exotic patterns, cutting the patterns up based on photo ref i took of friends wearing clothing and then, using the selection tool, i brought up the brightness/darkenss of areas based on photo ref. to create depth volume, dimension in cloth. i know what you mean about the deadlines. I was putting in 30 hours a week on that game and going to school full time. it was crazy--but great experience.

That cloth technique seems to work pretty good - it's noisy and all that, but suits the subject matter and I bet it works fine at game rez...I think the woman on the bottom right worked out best...cleanest, most graphic of them....

really sweet stuff man.
i'd agree with landmate on the nose, the lighting from both sides is a bit wierd. She's beautiful nonetheless.

so you internal or freelance with bioware?

Interesting effect Ty. I almost chose the bottom right character heh heh. That technique was very effective on her.
