Something I've been working on the past week. Just thought I'd throw this up here to see if I could get any C&C luvin'. Haven't posted on Concept Art in ages ... I don't have any excuses except I haven't been drawing much in the past.

Hopefully, that changes with this one. Cheers!

Some detail at 100 and 50% resolution.

Edit: I just read through the sticky threads (I should know better).

This image is done in Photoshop and is an extention of a sketch that I drew last year some time (which was mainly the character's face). I typically draw cartoon-ish things and work in web resolution. So, this illustration (shooting for realism and print resolution) is a HUGE leap of faith for me artistically.

About the image: I'm trying to achieve a vagueness and isolation to the overall look of the image, but upon closer inspection the viewer should be able to pick up on visual cues to a bitter love story. With the right clues or items of interest I hope to make the viewer wonder about the relationship's past and hopefully draw their own conclusions to it's demise.

What info I'm looking for: Any valuable critique at all would be very much appreciated. If you notice anatomy issues or have some suggestions for color and value fixes ... these are things that have always been troublesome for me.

Thanks CA!

this is a beautiful and emotional piece. It fits very well with the idea of valentine's day, especially for those with lost loved ones, or loved ones far away and out of touch. The useage of a a-lot of blue only assentuates the sad emotion of emotions unrequited and that sensation of loneliness that approaches on holidays spent without those you love. This is a beautiful and powerful piece. The only thing that struck my eyes as noteworth is his head, it's fine and all, but some hair, or smaller ears or some more shading in the area... something to tone down the forehead area. Great work, excellent concept, MAD PROPS.

Thanks for the reply Serena. Unfortunately, I didn't get much chance to work on this the past weekend. Most of the family came down with the flu so I was playing Dad and nursemaid. :(

I'm not sure if I'll be adding any hair to the guy. But the top of his head has been bugging me a bit. I'm pretty convinced that I'm not done there. Maybe some stubble would be enough?

Compositions is good, the concept is great.

I think you know this all ready.
But the head of the character is lil bit small in comparison the the mandible. The head is an egg shape, starts big at the temporalis and tapers down to the jaw.

If you are using photo reference for the portrait of the character then that is the problem. because photograph always distorts the image.
Just add more head to the sides.

I hope that was useful.
