This is my first painted self portrait. for the past couple of months I have done a whole bunch of pencil ones, but today I decided to go the whole way, after seeing all those awsome Daarken pictures, and the Android Spods, and Staleckrakers tutorial from today!
all in all this is less than two hours work. going to try again soon, when I return from my holydays.
Oh one more thing, I am not mad, just very concentrated :D
C&C welcome

Hey, this is much better than my first and currently only attempt at digital painting. Only things that didn't seem right in my mind were the lips. They seem a little too red and I think the little dip that runs from the nose to the lips is too wide. I'd say this is quite a good start though.

Endregan/ Long hair :dorky: rocks!
Sloopy/ yep the lips colour was rather hard to hit, when I used red it looked like I had lipstick on, and when I toned it down with the skin colours it would wash out, have to work more on it.
thank you for you advice. oh not my first digital painting, but my first selfportrait.

did this one today, but I am having problems with colours. I don't really know much about the rules of mixing them, and am just trying to learn while I paint.
I am working to much trough intuition, and that doesn't work all the time, so I need some ground rules. Any ideas what is wrong or what it is that I have to take in consideration when painting.
I think I'll redo this one but only in b/w.
the other guys make it look so easy...

Dude, I think your colors are fine. I strongly suggest learning about color temperature, once you can differentiate between warm and cool colors life becomes much easier I think.
But I think more important than colors are values. I think the values are more off in the second one than the colors. It looks more like you are trying to fill in a drawing than painting. If you're gonna do one in b/w, maybe also try it without a sketch? Get all the big masses in without worring about the features. If you can make it look like you without painting the actual eyes/lips/etc then you're on the right track I'd say.
BTW, in case I sound like I'm talking the smack... I'm not! Just tryin to help. :)

Nah you aren't talking smack actually, just sense.
what I know about colour temp is that shadows are supposed to be cooler than highligths, as a rule of thumb..but that is about it.
Got a couple of colour books, but they were to dry for me, so I bought Ittens elements of coluor just yesterday. hopefully I'll understand better in a week or two.
Thanks again.

Hey RM, nice studies,
Your drawing is off in places, most noticably the eyes. Make sure you keep your drawings precise when you paint.
Nice color shifts. Make sure your values are helping to describe your form, mood. Some of your structure is off because your value design gets choppy. Your light source is pretty hazy as well. If its a style thing, no worries.
Watch where your forms turn away, dont cut the edge too harsh or it'll flatten out the contour...as in the far cheek, or the nose contour. (the second ones nose is great, a nice soft edge turns the form! )
Make sure your values and color are doing a job, structure, mood, depth...dont just add them for no reason...no Lazy values! Make em work!
Oh well, just some thoughts, keep up the nice work!
Art :)

Just came back from my vacation... haven't drawn or painted in more than a week, even if I really missed it I think that it was all for the best to get a bit away for a while.
Anyway
killer_gym_sox/ Well I am not a Hanks lookalike, so I need to improve my skills much more.
mR.anGel/ yeah I know what you mean, and I think my line work is much stronger than my painting skills, I usually loose to much detail when going from one to the other.
ArtVogt/ Thank you very much for you reply! that was one very interesting read, and you have raised many issues that I will have to look into. thanks again mate!
here is a fast B/W study. I did it before looking at the latest C&C (especially ArtVogt's), but I think it is the closest one.
