Hi, i am a highschool senior working on designs and generally trying to get a lot better before artschool. This thread will be heavily comprised of dragon and monster designs however i may throw in some armor designs aswell. These are a few dragon concepts that i have been toying around with and a Trex study. I try to keep my dragons and wyverns based in realism.....kinda. In order they are the Greater Wyrm, Lesser Dracus, Northern Canopy Dragon, Vivipara, and Voranus. Here are some descriptions:

Greater Wyrm:
This is the greater wyrm, a wyrm under my definition is a wingless dragon of immense size. He measures in at around 80 feet, and stands roughly 20 feet tall. It is possible for them to stand on hind legs, however this decreases mobilty heavily. They dwell mostly in mountainous and volcanic regions. Their hide is thick and is capable of deflecting the sharpest of blades. They prefer to live in solitude ad are rarely seen in groups. It is not known how many of these majestic creatures still roam, for their terrain is to dangerous for most explorers. Though many have tried, few of these beast have ever been killed successfully. Armor made from these beasts is prized amonst those made from voranus.

Lesser Dracus:
This is is the lesser dracus, the smallest of the flying mounts available. Though not capable of sustained flight for more than 3 hours, they are more than able to fly from city to city. They are not able to carry any more than 250lbs and keep in the air however. The lesser dracus shares in the dracus family much like the vivipara, however the vivipara is flightless. The lesser dracus is roughly 25 feet in length. They are rarely used as war mounts because they are easily spooked by loud noises, the drakonus is the flying war mount of choice. There are many companies that offer rental lesser dracuses for passage over large chasms and canyons.

Northern Canopy Dragon:
Though not actually a dragon, this forest dwelling drake is quite a sight in its self. Drakes are classified as four legged wyverns. This creature possesses a prehensile(opposable)tail and a set of small wings for clearing small gaps in the canopy. Not particularily tall this drake can be upwards of 25 feet long. Using its strong arms and hind legs this beast is capable of moving faster in dense forest than any other creature known. It utilizes a unique camoflauge that appears to be thick foligge from above and the glowing leaves in the sun from the bottom. This creature is diurnal, with its sourthern relative being nocturnal. Even with the influx of hunters in the forests it calls home it is able to keep a stable population and sits high on its seat at the top of the food chain.

Vivipara:
This is the vivipara, a smaller drake used as a mount. This is one of the fastest creatures in the known world, on flat land they are capable of reaching speeds of 40 to 50 mph. Their size makes the capable of carrying one person, a saddle, and a small bag of supplies. It may seem inhumane, but domesticated viviparas are bred without arms to make them less of a threat one was to get out of hand. Wild viviparas are considered to be highly dangerous, for they often times travel in hunting parties. Their dorsal tail fin is used as a sort of rudder to change directions at very high speeds. Measuring at around 15 feet long these are suberb war mounts because they take up very little room in relation to their larger cousins. In large cities vivparas are used to compete in high speed races.

Voranus:
The Voranus is the largest known wyvern, and is considered by many to have a near god status. The voranus has never been measured because a dead one has never been discovered, but some estimates have said it could be up to 150 feet long and 50 feet tall. Many have tried to fight this majestic monster, even fullscale armies, though none have prevailed. With a hide so strong that carving a mere scale is a deed worthy of remembrance, the voranus has never felt the pierce of a blade. The only known subjects have only been seen on the hostile continent of the Ryu-baeroc. So few sets of armor have been made from the scales that they are only in possession of kings and museums. Capable of destroying small cities with a sigle breath attack, people will evacuate large kingdom if even a mention of a voranus in the area. Legend has spoke of one dragon slayer who killed a voranus, however this is believed to be pure myth.

Feel free to critique anything, there may be a few spelling or grammatical errors.

Hey man, welcome to CA. Im also trying to get better before heading off to art school. Even though I graduated last year, this site has helped me out quite abit, and Ive only been a member since December. You have some great skill in creature design. Really cant wait for more man. On your last post, the first pic with the dino-rider. It seems That he is sitting too far into the dino's back. Either that or the guys torso is too short for his body. I know its just a sketch, but I would really like for you to take that piece further and spend at least a few hours on it. Great work so far. Shouldnt have a problem getting accepted into a descent art school. Keepem coming man.

Thanks for all the supportive critiques, i hadnt expected this kind of feedback. The reason the backstories for each dragon are so extensive is because i have had this idea kicking around in my brain for a good long while. I will draw some of them in their native environments once i have finished drawing all of them.

Here are a few new things. I tried adding colors to my voranus sketch, however none were to my liking, but this is the closest i could get to what is in my head. I also felt like drawing a phoenix like bird for some reason, it isnt finished and probably wont be but it looks kinda cool as is. The last of the new stuff is my concept for Sigurd the dragon slayer. Sigurd as few know is a legendary dragon slayer grom norse and germanic mythology. He weilded the mighty sword Gram, or balmung in some iterations, and killed the ferocious dragon fafnir. I just really liked that story and have planned on adapting it into a videogame someday after college.

I also decided to throw in one of my finished art pieces. His name is Arvalis and is the main character for a project that is under development with my friends. I am not looking for critique on him, for this is pretty much his final design, i just wanted to show you guys what my finished things can look like.

Hi i have an update for you guys. I have been working heavily on creating a new look for my Sigurd character. There have been many armor styles i have been researching, and i hope my efforts are fruitful. Here are a few of the steps i took when creating his new armor. I had one basic body layout i wanted to use so i copied it a few times, then i went to work on him. The first one is a pre-research armor design that i had done and not finished because it looked stupid. The second one is after research but i just didnt get it quite right. The last is what i became most happy with, i also added a cape for good measure :)
