hey everyone i am so happy with the way that this painting turned out and only took a few hours ( which is quick for me but incredible slow for everyone else i hear)... another concept image for the mod... originally it was going to be a regular gay buffalo with a scarf hung around his ankle but things change

heyo i finished the snail, continued work on a drug free design and started to model my grandma with four legs charactor in max( shortly after max crashed)
i was going to add some variation in the shell but i most likely won't use this design so i just finished so it could leave me alone
if anyone could give me some clue as to how craig mullins creates such realistic art i would be forever in your dept

these pictures go in the crappy sketches catagory
the mod i was creating took an entirely differnt turn from i original planned now it has hope!
these images dont relate at all to the mod...
we (my team and i) have just decided it is going to be a western civilization led by a 4 armed buffalo god vs. some atlantians led by the crab grandma that was shown above...excellent stuff.

very colorful aliens.. especially like that granma with claw-feet.
you seem to do some really detailed sketches, it would be neat to see that come out more in your paintings
the good war
August 15th, 2003, 08:06 PM
thanks for the love Hunger_Artist
my paintings often times will be simpler because color is so much more complicated than shading but im learning thanks
- side note today doing these studies i've learned more about my skills and learning style than i did about reality which is unusual. ive learned that im better suited to creating a picture detail by detail because i often become discouraged when the entire pictures color seems off but when you try to match one color then slightly alter that to match the agacent color the image starts to hold itself together more... as if even though it is incorrect colors the colors are comparitivly correct to each other. another thing i learned was that i prefer 100% opacicy because it saves energy and makes you understand the colors your laying down more than if you were to make layered color, and because i enjoy the aethstitic value more. in the hand study i learned to create shading on skin by lowering the value but allowing the saturation to remain the same until you reach your next major value change . also some stuff about color sat. that would be hard to explain. and im making my 100% opac. style follow more rules like detailed areas are complimented by vast simgle tone areas and this balance should be sought after

heyo nothing really major here just some speed paintings trying out some methods I observed while studying some Craig Mullins paintings in terms of logic efficiency technique that type of thing
I found these studies to be extremely useful so far because I do not copy the photos piece for piece at all, but rather I study the picture and gain an understanding of it to the point that I know why the values ect are what they are and then I take my own interpretation of what should happen and correct it to any anomalies I did not anticipate in the photo.
I focus on -
- ease of technique
- gaining lighting knowledge
- Expansion of spatial understanding of natural forms
- generalizing large shapes, values, areas to gain understanding of the whole
Look at the progress!
please bear with the crap for the first couple of images

Some of the observations in your studies are real accurate. Others, not so. Keep doing them, and other studies, and try to focus on what you are seeing. Its one thing I am trying to learn myself, but its one big key to better art. Keep 'em coming!!

cool, bro. keep working the faces. i need to start doing some of that. your pen work looks the best when you use longer, fewer, lines to describe what you are drawing. Awesome work, keep up the volume. you're going to watts?

thanks ill keep that in mind i have a tendoncy to want to describe a ton of minute devations in form and i end up creating abunch of tiny stabs at the page i and looks like i stabbed the page afterword
i really want to go to watts i got a list of classes in the mail but it turned out to be the courses held during the summer so i sent away for another brochure... i don't know how quickly classes fill up up there so i am kind of anxious

MAN the digital paintings need more practice but its your linework and ability in pen that just captivates me. you got something there, its very fine art almost, just practice drawing from life and proportions and such and then just take that to a whole other level.
again, like phil said, ou got some really strong line work and detailed stuff, keep working with it.

September 10th, 2004, 03:01 AM
ahh it been quite a long period of time
thanks, its nice to be noticed by such talented artists
for two good reasons though i have been creating a few illustrations i will show here at the end of the month and i fucked up my mind boxing... for several hours after boxing every time i would try to focus on something like drawing i would get a splitting head ache i find now that the head ache no longer plagues me but my initial accuracy and detail i am able to put into a drawing has dropped dramatically i feel like i have lost several years of drawing. i found it to be extremely depressing but i am growing once again and where as i scanned 90%of my last sketch i now find myself scanning 10% i finished another 50 page sketchbook but all of it is crap except for these now rare decient images
( far scarier than losing your ability to draw is losing your ability to visual manipulate what you see i found my self stuggling without it for a period of time but its back now)

HI
Nice stuff there is some anatomy
errors here and there (the ear on
the smiling fella on the last
one is off anatomy wise.)
But overall they look pretty good and your
imagination is pure gold, so keep at it and post
more often :D I had never finded my self lossing my hability,
I mean, I do strugle some times with things I thought I knew
but I strugle with this things because I dont know
as much as I should know about em.
just never stop practicing dude and you will get
all the skills you wanna get. :D
P. S. increast the constrat of your scans by
using a copy multiply layer of your drawings on top
of your images that way they will look better,
the light of the scanner gets reflected by the
graphite and the result is a loss of contrats.

thank you for the kind words maxetormer i have been attending a few fig study classes lately to get better at anatomy
my friend and i have planned out a comic book-its about slavery, rebellion, war and ironic nessisary evils. so to get in shape for this i created 3 quick paintings today and hopefully a few more tommorrow.....i been pretty horrible about drawing lately i need a job and that has been my main focus so i haven't drawn for about a month- good news though the local college will let me skip the first year of thier computer animation associates degree

Nice work. You're making good progress. I'm insanely jealous of you're linework, so clean and sparkly. How do you do that? You're color studies are coming along too. Keep at it.
Just a preference thing, man, but you might want to alteast do an autolevels adjustment on the pencil sketches before posting them. Some of them are kind of hard to read.

thanks. i started working with pen about 6 months ago or something to work on my drawing alone, if you place yourself in the mindset that the only thing you want to make is the drawing then the drawing has to be clean and nice because you won't have shading or color tho make up for it. i filled up an entire page with little crosshatchings to gain eye hand control , it works because its easy to tell if your hand ever strays one way or another. i think the largest part in clean line work is just the planning that goes into a drawing before you commit with ink... one more think i really like using sharpies now because they are faster, give a stylized look, make comosition easy, and the line work appears better because you don't have to worry about crosshatching or little gaps in the line wok here and there. i would also suggest sharpies because and downfall of differnt line weights next to each other can be avoided if you lead one into another.
when yuo draw make clearity of line your prime concern and it will come
i heard the levels comment before, i haven't scanned any pencils in a while but i will have to remember the LEVELS
