So as I've been browsing these forums, it seems like the vast majority of people here have some kind of connection to Art Center in Pasadena, be it being a student, an alumni, or an admirer.

Currently I'm a Character Animation student at Calarts, and there seems to be a big rivalry between Art Center and Calarts. I recently visited Art Center for the first time, and was quite impressed. The design of the school was awesome, the work ethic was strong, and the quality of student work was professional. As happy as I am at Calarts, it made me a little regretful that I didn't at least apply to AC (just a little... you guys have a much better student store. Stupid Valencia.). In fact, I'm considering taking classes there as supplemental education to what I can't get at Calarts.

What I'm curious about is how people feel about either or both schools, since both schools have some amazing graduates who become leaders in the respective industries they enter?

I'll give my perspective first. While I'm pretty satisfied with Calarts' artsy side, I wish there would be more rigor in the design aspect. It's all about story, character, and animation, but surprisingly little emphasis is put on the design as a whole. In addition, there is barely any technical knowledge taught, which is rather frustrating to people who aren't at least relatively familiar with how certain digital art making programs work (me included here). At art center, do you feel this is opposite? Also, the student quality at Calarts is excellent, considering the acceptance rate is so low, but there still tends to be a bit of slacking which is frustrating for the older or harder working students.

Thoughts? It's something I've been thinking a lot about since last year, and I'm curious what others think. It would also be interesting to hear what people have to say about Art Center versus other schools like RISD, Academy of Art, or Ringling.

Having attended neither Art Center or CalArts (although I did apply), my thought on your situation might be that you think the grass is greener on the other campus.

I'd hear that you're pretty satisfied at CalArts and you also seem very honest about your experience there. But I'm also wondering if you were to have originally applied to Art Center, would you still be having the same musings about other CalArts and other art schools as well?

I know I often wonder what my life would've been like if I would've chosen California or if I had attended a regular university. But when it comes right down to it, one still has to be self motivated. Even if your school is lacking in something (and ALL schools lack something- there's no such thing as the perfect art school), then it behooves you to go beyond what your school offers. Who's to say once you graduate CalArts you can't scamper down to Art Center and take a few of those things you thought you were missing at CalArts? It's not that far.

One of the most poignant things my dad said to me upon my graduation was that my real education started then. One never stops learning and if you still crave the academic setting and structure, then go back for more.

It's also very refreshing to hear an honest & sincere assessment of your own education and you school too.

I agree with everything Storyboard Dave said but id also like to point out that your an animation major at a renowned art school that is known for its animation program. Art Center is great but mainly for design majors like industrial design etc.

"The vast majority" of 63,000+ members?
Seriously, I doubt Art Center students/alums/faculty even make up the largest single group here.

But, to get to your real question: apples and oranges. Don't compare schools, compare departments.
