Wasker this is some real awesome stuff here man! I'm loving all the studies your doing and your brush strokes are really good. I see tons of confidence in your mark making. Honestly man this is really good. Love that landing pad with the spaceship!

I saw what Dile said and agree...I'm in the same boat also. I think what I would like to see from you is to really fully push some of your illustrations and pieces. Take for instance some of those still-lifes on the human figure studies on the previous page. Take one of those that catches your eye and give it that extra push.

Keep it up with your work, these studies are really seriously coming along. Oh hey thanks for the add also on facebook;)

Cacodaemonia: thanks , cool seeing you at the colour theory class!

Likewise. :) I was pretty bummed that I couldn't stick around for all of it, but I can watch it on demand now that I'm back from visiting relatives. I've been hearing great things about the class, and the couple hours I attended were awesome, so I'm really looking forward to more!

The launch pad painting you posted is really great. Only thing I noticed is that it seems like the ship is tilted slightly more toward and to the right of the viewer than the scaffolding and buildings.

The jungle bug is very cool. Picking up some tricks from the color theory class? ;)

August 13th, 2009, 02:54 PM
Eparts: thanks! I tried some different stuff when I did that. trying to keep temperature in mind. Retrospectively there are alot of stuff I would do differently.

Helltroll: Hehe :) thank you.

Lyno: Thanks Lyno, I like that scottish dude you did in your SB!

dU5K: Thanks man :)

ninjacat11: Thanks !

multadroit: thanks man, I like texturing but sometimes I feel that I use it without purpose. I should probably smudge and use a softedged bursh abit more than i do. thanks again

theories: Oh hehe, you give me too much credit. there's still lots to be learned. thanks for the appreciation though.

t i m: Yeah! Go go bananas !

Cacodaemonia: Cool to see you in here Caco ! Honestly, Jason just blew my mind with his colour theory class. I mean, yeah i've done a 1001 studies but his stuff was just mind candy. Now I feel like I'm trippin, seeing greens and violets all over the place! :rocker: Trying to implement some more colour variation and tempertature aswell. I hadnt really thought about those two before the Class but now I sure do!

I know about the space ship, hehe its' perspective super skewed. I should've drawn some guidelines or put down some cubes in Sketchup before i started.

Trashy: I hear you man, I think alot of artist fall in the 'speed paint' trap. It's a thin line to walk indeed between polished and suggestion. I want to retain the looseness if I can and let the values and temperature do the talking. Alot of form can be suggested if you just control the eye of the viewer. I hope I can do that one day.

Personally I think stuff I spend more than a day on eventually will look like crap. I reach a point where I'm somewhat satisfied but beyond that it's like polishing a dog turd.

It's something I need to get better on, I know. Because even dog turds need love..

thanks for the crits and visit :)

retardedmonkey: hahaha, don't crank yer neck boy!

haiku: It's amazing how
a friend I have not yet met
can brighten my day

darkos: thanks Darkos!

zelda_geek: Green is a under rated colour! Thanks

Samuel Gray: Thank you,

Bushido: Thanks again, Bushido hehe :) no oils for ya this time!

ronaldliu: Thanks

zweiDee: Thank you !

I've been trying to do some 3d lately to get a better understanding of what production artists are doing (and because its fun!!)
The models shown are low poly and shown in a real time render engine (meaning it would look like that ingame aswell.)

The dwarf statue thing is 500 polygons with a 256x256pixel normalmap diffuse and spec, which is abit over the top but hey,

The log is 38 polygons with a 256x128 normal, spec and diffuse. All textures except the normal map are hand painted in PS. It's really wierd just painting a texture on a flat surface but I guess its a good exercise!
I also included a screen grab of 3 high poly logs done in Zbrush. I'm thinking of putting together some fantasy props out of it!

I got wood. :)

Farvus: yeah I agree man, i'll give some more attention. You've progressed alot lately man. I like what you've posted on sijun and in you sb . keep at it dood.

D@niel: thankx, daniel, like your characters man!

JParrilla: hopefully :) thanks for the visit

MatejaPetkovic: thank you

Lyno: Hey! yeah its made in zbrush. around 500k if i remember correctly. then i built a lowpoly in maya and baked it in xnormal (freeware!) textures are painted in PS.

theUNKNOWNsketcher: and thank you!

corza334_ yeah , which painting are you talking about? I guess the space ship. I put some people in there on teh platform but they are kinda lost in the mess. gotta work harder on it :)

Snow Lion: its an ordinary ballpoint I found lying around, I use various markers; copic, prisma colour and some brand I cant remember but its also kinda big, white board marker pens and whatnot!:)

davekang: Rejoycing is awesome. thanks for the visit Dave!

Jonathan W. Rodegher: thanks jonathan :) yeah , characters are a bitch. I should look on more refs and work more on those. Luckily I took Whit class on references today and it was pretty sweee-heeet.

here's some doodles I did while listening to mr Brachna. He said he would kiss me on the mouth on the Berlin workshop. what the f..

Hey Wasker! =)

Cool meeting up today, we´ll have to do that more often =). A real pleasure browsing through your sketchbook here, tons and tons of great stuff. Very diverse, and I in particular liked your environments overall. Perhaps you could spend some more time on getting more character into the poses of your characters, and maybe make them feel a little more natural. Kickass work all around though!

Looking forward to next week yo ;)

Hideyoshi: Thanks Hideyoshi, I love your industrial stuff. So clean!

conte: yeaaahaw go PC :)

Jason Snair: Thanks Jason, I find making alot of small thumbs helps alot when coming up with ideas for environments, characters and patterns. itz fun

LisandroG: Oh thanks :) I should do more studies of stuff I draw later on. for example I guess looking at some industrial stuff could probably have helped me a bunch before doing the bot in this post.

Flaskpost: Tack flaskan !

Darktwin: Thanks man,

Ashrumm: hehe thank you

Cacodaemonia: thanks caco, I was going for a dumb and crude creature-look for the dragon, as if it's just a mount and the rider is doing the thinking. I think too many dragons are too smart for their own good in modern fantasy. I'd be more terrified of a winged monster than a talking lizard to be honest.

SamsonsReaper: Thanks mate, how are things in the states?

DefiledVisions: Tacka tackar :)

Cacodaemonia: thanks caco, I was going for a dumb and crude creature-look for the dragon, as if it's just a mount and the rider is doing the thinking.

I definitely think that comes across in the sketch. The dragon seems more like a big, nasty ox than an ancient being of wisdom. ;)

sevarenge: tackar, jag ska kolla in din Sb om du vill. kul med så mycket svenskar här på ca :D

bouroune: thank you :) looking back at it there's alot of stuff I would have done differently. Its too loose in some areas and the colours are abit spotty. Unifying them abit in terms of value corresponding to the correct planes of the bot would make the image better. But as I'm a bit lazy when it comes to revisiting pictures as it is. I'll draw a new bot instead !

Cacodaemonia: hehe, exactly what I aimed for then :) I think I got some inspiration from the LotR movies. Those Weta studio designs are sick! thanks for the visit man :)

Too many favorites in this thread! Mindblowing progress, I'm in awe!

That last painting of the robot on the bus is hilarious. I love it!

kickass bot, dude!

Rushlord_ haha its funny you mentioned them because I've been getting alot of mixed comments about those legs. its like some of my friends think they fit him and others dont. :> thanks for dropping by!

Cacodaemonia_ I just made it up on the spot to sound smart, (one of those days) :) but in short it's deciding what value range you want to keep in your image (high key, lo key, mid) and then in which value range you want most of your details (shadow /light /mid). Just as Jason Manley stressed the importance of colour variation and re-cycling colours all over the place I think it's important to keep your values recycled in a similar manner.
In other words, keep your values as large block of general value throughout the image. for example; the background and unimportant stuff should be limited to a few values (with exceptions ofcourse) while the important stuff is peaked by values that arent used all over. These values might be your extreme darks or extreme whites placed right next to each other but they do not have to be. Think of value hierarchy as a pyramid (as a hierachy, haha!) the values on the bottom are used most frequently while the ones near the top are used to high light important things in your image.. in other words value hierachy is closely tied to the composition of the picture.

I hope that gave you a better idea what I meant :)
I might be totally wrong what the word value hierachy actually means. I think it could be a corporate term for the moral 'values' and standards a company wishes to express to the outside world and the customers. Must've snapped it up when I did some graphic design job a while back. But the word got a nice ring and I think it could applied to art in a similar fashion as the word colour theory (ie. a fuzzy term).

Thanks for the visit Caco :)

-goes back to sb stalker mode-

Jabo_ jabo ! :) glad to see that you're back on track with your SB .

monotony_Thanks lately I've really been trying to nail the feel of the concept, i think it could probably be important for a concept artist to capture not just the texture or colour but also how much something weighs or moves or sounds or breathes. well, atleast i want to :) dunno how well i communicate it. love your stuff btw, bro

Flaskpost_ tack för kritsen Flaskan :) Ja jag håller med. lite lurigt med perspektiv när allt är ihopklumpat så nära viewern. Får tänka på det till nästa Bot!

Giorge_ hey Giorge! yeah it's a 3d piece for my folio sometime in the future. its not supposed to be animated just a sitting piece of environmental geometry. Im thinking of brining it down to a optimized size so a game like Oblivion or Crysis something could manage it and maybe try out my hand painting skills on the texture. 3d is a whole lot of fun it's like making 2d but with a whole other dimesion to play with! lol

Dile_ heyo Dennis tack :) Maybe we'll meet up on the next GCC in karlshamn? (if they'll make one for 2010, sofe's going down the drain and all that)
and nope, you got it right! he's standing on the bus :D

I tried out water colours for like the first time since I was in kindergarten. it's pretty fun but tricky as fuck to stop it from flooding your page. this is me, 3am,in mah head gear listening to some funky tunes. being lit by my monitor and a lamp in the window and riding the coffee wave. it's displayed at roughly the same size it was painted. and no, I don't normally look this emo.

Killer Napkins: Thanks mr Napkins, hehe yeah I left out the cord. It was hanging across my cheek and down my chest. Half the time I didnt notice it and the other half it was freaking me out. It's made by some wierd plastic/rubber material and every time it touches my skin it felt as if spiders were crawling all over my skin. Might've been some oil paint fumes left in the room that made me feel that way though.

Jeff Lai: yup, that's me on p16. I should do some more of those oil sps.
mariusz: Thanks, the colours in real life are probably abit more towards violet and purple. Having your monitor as a primary lightsource is pretty funky.

Here are some lame thumbnails for a 3dmodel I've made. I wanted the robot to feel 'square' in its general silhouette, have one arm replaced by a huge ass gun, communicate scale really well, be a biped bot and feel somewhat retro futuristic.

Jabo
October 6th, 2009, 06:00 PM
http://www.desert-rain.de/smilies/wank.gif Ohhh yeah, more sqaurebots! I love how they look somewhat fat and clumsy, but also extremely heavy and vigorous. Regarding retro, number 3 is probably the candidate. The round forms in number two make him more post-2000-ish, while 3 is very edgy. I still like number 2s overall appearance more, he looks like he's got character. The head area in number 1 is unreadable.

haha , i know what you mean , i tried some time ago 3d two , i kinda know the basics , but until i am satisfied with my drawing and painting skills probably i will continue with the 3d stuff, till then i have to focus on this

The robot thumbnails look good , heavy , drop some detail and maybe some color for some of them ... but the watercolor sp ... wooh ... it's a no no ^^ ,study more watercolor tehnique , try to keep the color and water clear

take care

Giorge: yeah I hear ya, thanks for the crits, Giorge. I'm a total beginner when it comes to watercolour as you can tell, it's a really tricky medium. I keep lookin at zorn and john singer saggy's watercolorurs and I'm just blown away by their skills. I'll see if I can do some studies of their stuff.

duckfukker: Oh hiho mr duckfucka, thanks for the love and see you on tomorrow :)

TheGnoll: Hey gnoll long time no seen in here, :) you've been cranking out goodies lately. Thanks for the visit bro.

Here's the thumbnails consolidated into something abit more final.

..and below are some mini sketches in my supersmall moleskine ( like 4" x 3") of women I've found on the webz, in my apartment or just stuff from the top of my head. Done with markers, goache, acrylics and graphite and fineliners ,ie pretty much the closest thing I can get my hands on at the moment.

displayed at ~130% actual size.

Wasker, boten ser ruggigt nice ut! tycker dock att den förlorat lite karaktär som thumbnailsen har, tror det beror på att du gett den så mycket detaljer. känns lite plottrig liksom.

DoubleThink: Thank you sir! :) Keep those bridgman studies flowin'!

Cacodaemonia: It's got abit wierd proportions, yeah, I was thinking of a classic painting (Bougerau?) of a woman carrying a bucket of water when I picked the final design. You could really tell she was compensating for the weight of the load by the way her torso and pelvis was tilting. I think was aiming for something like that (not in terms of quality but feeling of mass and weight). You know, as if the robot wasnt quite designed for carrying such a bulky armor and weapons but it's been fitted with it anyway to tip the balance of the war or something :)

thanks for the crits though, daemonia .

Mag-Neo: thank you

rakuda: hehe, it was fun doing them. I just scribbled and recorded what people around me where doing in my tiny tiny moleskine and then finger painted the colours in with the two acrylic paitn tubes I happened to have in my pocket. Not giving a crap about values or established rules just playing :) very liberating to do from time to time.
thanks :)

B-Man: lol :D tack gillar dina grejor Bman :) tack för besöket! säg till om du kommer till Malmö nån gång, vi är ett gäng som brukar gå ut och teckna på tisdagar!

Flaskpost: yup, details is always something you have to give and take of. I think I ending up dissing the more instresting parts of the silhouettes/thumbs i posted earlier and thus making the final design a tad bland.

Trashy: thankz trazhy

eparts: thank you!

Arn J.: Ah! another old WoTer! Awesome :D Back where it all started. Yup I remember you and Oín, Dozzie and all the other dudes from back then. Cool to see you here Gyph!

Liffey: Thanks liff!

So anyway, I finished this ages ago but I havent got around uploading it here till now. As some of you know I've been doing some 3d lately (diversity!) and here's the concept I did but in three dimensions! I tried making it like a big battle ship kind of thing. With bunkers sitting in his torso and shoulders to cover any dead zones that the guns on the head and the big un on the arm can't pick off. Intended for a fps kind of shooter where you have to topple these giants from within while they're wrecking a city.

Wasker
November 12th, 2009, 06:05 PM
caco: thanks ! The blanket is pretty much just the base colour of the paper + a rather sucky photo making it abit too white. I've got to get myslef a scanner... some day.

jokerrabit: thanks :) yeah it would be awesome to get it printed, I've had a few guys on another forum wanting prints of it aswell but too be honest I think he's got too many tubes and undercuts that wouldnt translate well in the print. But I'll look into it anyway :)

here's another selfportrait. I fucked up the hair pretty bad. Pen on Paper. again, the photo made the values abit too dark in the bottom of the image. They're fairly accurate in the center of the face but they bloom or fade to black abit towards the edges.

So here are some paper plane concepts for a game, its a space shooter kind of game but instead of space ships you control a paper plane and kill other stuff made of paper. Abit more cartoony than I usually do ( I think) but fun nontheless!

Learned one or two things about the importance of texture and material in concepts while making these, further proving that there are lessons to be learnt from the most odd jobs and experiments.

dU5K: Thank you :) You'll just have to trust the image I guess because I'm not very keen on posting photos of myself! ( I really look like the 3 faced mutant posted a while ago >:) this is just a cover up to fool lil' humies)

Sopor+Aeternus: thank you, I learned alot when doing them. I tried keeping folds and stuff in mind aswell when designing them.

Teundeboer: You're right. The rice lanterns propably wouldnt be able to carry the weight. I don't know how big a deal it is because the game is rather cartoony to start with, but I get your point. Gotta keep the suspension of belief goin'!
I'm glad you find them childlike because that was one of the keywords I got when tasked to design them. Thanks for the crits, love and comment !

walnut: haha thank you :)

here's a 3d planet I did for the same game (concept, also by me, on the left) wires in the middle and textured and lit ingame engine on the right. It's rather unoptimized in terms of polygon count but since there's only ever 3 planets on the screen that's not really and issue.

It's quite fun making cartoon stuff but I'll think I'd rather stick to making more realistic stuff for future games.

I'll see if I can get a picture for an assains creed 2 competition up in the next few days.

Mark Tarrisse: hey Mark. I'm working on it along with some graphic guys and coders. I think it would be too hardcore to make it alone, hehe
I've heard of the Unity engine and the pros and cons of it (you can run it directly in the browser for example!) but the engine we are using is an inhouse engine made by our awesome coders. but ye, the Unity engine is pretty slick aswell. Thanks for the tips and comment , mark :)

dU5K: Thanks Dusk :) one of the teams are undead/cultists and are supposed to be a bit spooky. The battle rages over commandpoints (villages) that change appearance depending on which team owns them. I'm glad the eerie feel reads as intended.
