Hmm. Not really sure whether I like this one or not. I was going for something a bit less dense (like the smoky creature from Lost?) Well, all good practice, I should do these DSGs more often.

Hehe Mitze, I was sooo close to make one exactly like that :) I imagined something like Indiana Jones picking up that thing that made the boulder come and a huge snake creeping up behind him, Good job.

I lost all motivation to do this last night, but thought better off it today.
Lots of good stuff in this DSG, so I'll give them some thought.
burrito I love your organics, what ever the topic but especially when you portray some corrupt organism/monster/being - like with this one. my fav. today.
setmonkey Please do, that is take it further as I like it already ;)
goran I find this one a bit tame, still it's excellent as always.
Mitze I like the explorer and the meta in yours - and while I often find your pieces somewhat overexposed in the contrast/colour department this hold it self together really well over all as well.
Rygus Nice P.O.V - As for speed when I train I usually drop an image once the time is out, but when I draw a more serious sketch I work at it as fast as possible through out. Once I feel that it portrays what I want to communicate I usually call it fin though - still I will try to work as fast with the above as I do with a 10 minute life drawing - I just work fast for a longer period of time. Might be worth considering, for your piece could be really hot with some added detail ;)

dan liimatta: Thanks for the comment. I'm going to be pushing myself harder and harder with these sketches. I've been in the render trenches for a little more than a year now, and I'm still nowhere near where I want to be. However, I feel I need to branch out into composition, environment, and storytelling in order for me to make better imagery, so I'm going to focus on experimenting more and more.
Also, don't lose motivation... just think of all the ideas you haven't explored yet!
As for your sketch, I really like the lighting, but I think you could push the trunk and branches directly behind your subject back further into the distance by desaturating them or making that yellow glow wrap around the back of them. Perhaps that would focus the eye on the subject even more? Just a thought....
digitalfly: Welcome back to the DSG.
Charcoal: I really like the composition of your sketch, but I feel there isn't any details here for my eyes to rest on. Perhaps some selective rendering would help the image stand out more?

burrito: I think your right. Im trying to work out my balance with drawing and rendering with painting. The snake head could definitely use some rendering. Thanks.
Rygus: I also like your POV. The bending perspective makes me think of a book cover or dust jacket to some adventure novel.

dan liimatta: Hey, thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can add some more to my sketch if I get the time. Great sketch, by the way, I like your take on the serpent.
Charcoal: Thanks. I think your sketch is really cool and dynamic, but I think some of the shapes and values around the jewel are a bit distracting.

This has to be my second post ever? I'm nervous!
I kind of wanted to do something a little different, seeing how everyone was doing some big snake... I decided to go with lizardmen! Tried to keep it under an 1hr30min .. I feel I could've done a lot more, though. O_o That, & I tried to add more to the jewel.

I'm blown away by this thread. Good sketches, everyone. I love the exceptional uses of colour & lighting!
EDIT: Oh, god. I always forget to colour something in, always. I'll do it tomorrow; it's late & I'm beat. Night!

Still working on digital painting. I keep trying opacity layers over top of base, but for some reason my images keep looking "washed out"...not popping the way I want them too....maybe I just need to pump up the values or hues.
Can't seem to pinpoint it yet, so if you can please share~
Done in 1 1/2 hrs, w/ref drawn straight into photoshop.

I really like the concept, good job using rule of 1/3s to keep the focus of the viewer on the serpent and building area.
The one thing I noticed is that the angle of the rooftop seam is not the same as the angle of the decor post (or upward arc) on the roof (located closest to the viewer). The back decor post angle is right on.
Hope that makes sense :) Looks great!

hmm yes I thought something was out, thanks for the feedback knowbody else ever seems to comment.
as to your question. I would paint your values first - grey scale. The washed out thing is common,
I think it is due to the monitor projecting light instead of obsorbing like a piece of paper. I usually
color correct my images when done, similar to a photograph, but you need the values well defined
first.

done enough to leave the nest...
digitalfly it almost looks like the serpent is made from a sea of flames at the bottom
Wasker that's dope
Larkin2 What would happen if you had the serpent as the primary source of light, it almost looks like a neon sign how it curves. Push the effects, make more vibrant? just some thoughts.
burrito That is a disorenting terror. I love how it twists your eyes! And the tounge and spit twist again, thats neat. Almost like a hallucination.
