Hello, I'm new!

I've been out of action for years... was good at drawing as a kid then got a computer and that meant something else to pass the time with, so the drawing slipped aside. I've just gotten back into it within the last few months with a view to going to uni, studying illustration, and actually having a career I'll be happy in. Meanwhile, here's a few sketches.
Comments, critique, and straight forward abuse (if you can justify it) very welcome!

Cheers

- Roo

Do you mean use more of the greyscale spectrum as my shading seems a little light? My scanners contrast isn't set up the best, they are a bit darker in life, but this is a new style for me. I always used to shade too much and the piece would end up looking very blurry. I'm trying to be able to sketch without lifting my pencil from the paper as much as I'm used to, as in keep as many continous lines going rather than scratchy sketches, to give nice, solid line quality. I realise only half of this post is relevant to what you were saying but I thought if people were going to see my process they should see what I'm trying to achieve ;)

looks quite cool, but id say perhaps do a few more studies of hands coz the thumb looks a little off ( says the girl who is the worst person at hands ever)

Hey UK guy huh!? Cool!

Your nature studies are really nice. Try doing some anatomy studies as well, I've recently started doing some myself, they are actually pretty fun to do! Hands are always the hardest thing to draw...Well I think so anyway!

Keep posting,

Laterz!

the hand looks a lot better =]
as for theband design i think the lettering would look better bolder and more uniformed in size and weight, and straighter edges

The time is what you need to do that kind of ink work, hours went into that and I didn't even finish it! hahaha, thanks for the comment :)

hey roo, the old guy sketch is good, youve captured the guy well, but id say maybe take a look at the eyes again because they seem slightly different sizes. also i'd suggest pushing your values more and try some directional shading =]

good stuff :)

Hey great job....especially on first one and the acorn!
i agree with lefran try to push the values by adding darker shades to add some contrast...

keep up!

i love the first ink work, awsome job at rendering the part u have done, esp considering u are using ink. the watercolor pieces are pretty bad ass too. you seem to be able to draw what you see or what is in front of you very well, perhaps draw soem more figures from life or reference. anyway awsome stuff. would love to see more.

Thanks Blaz, I'll use some softer pencils in my sketches when shading I think instead of sticking to the harder leads.

Kawakaze, a very encouraging comment, thanks alot, I'm about to start working on figures etc. going to concentrate on faces for a while then move to bodies. Cheers!

It's been a long time, but here's the result of a few hours and a Bic fine pen (I love those things!)

I think I should add more tree reflection in the bulb, paticularly on the bottom left corner where that branch would be reflecting in it... but it's not all that technically correct :)

Thanks for looking!

One thing i would like to see, are some more portrait studies like the old guy, they really help

keep it up

Cheers Fran... and I know I should definately crack on with the portrait, anatomy and all that stuff, I just find it hard work, and find it hard to make it fun!

Thought I'd stop by.

I like the details in the roots. Nice rendering overall.

But yeah, keep chugging away at the anatomy stuff also. It gets more fun and feels less like hard work the more you do it and the better you get at it. Climbing that first hump is always hard. I'm still climbing it myself.

Hey fellow UK person!

I love your still lifes. I recently got into using fine nib pens! Kinda addictive medium i feel! Where are you going to study?

Cheers both, I havn't updated this in a while :) richard: I'm aiming to go to a London uni, Camberwell or Central St Martins (but I don't really know my chances of getting in to either of them!) I'm torn between doing graphic design and illustration at the moment, so I'll be looking for something with a bit of both.

Love the work in your sketchbook richard, that boy reading a book is awesome. The lighting you've got in there is really nice, warming, and the sky gives it a sort of dream like quality. Reminds me of bonfire night randomly!

toubab-good effects with watercolours!

A few updates :)

Been sketching on and off, thinking about taking part in one of the sketch group things operating on CA to keep it coming and give me briefs.

Cheers

Attempting to draw using the whole arm, not just the wrist. Hoping to be able to draw better are bigger scales with more fluidity and style... here's a messy improvised guy with a big nose.
