Thanks staticpen,
Man...I've been feeling pretty crummy lately. I think allergies are taking a massive toll on me this year. Literally can't stand it sometimes here in the desert.
Okay, here is the eow for this week. It was fun to get into that again.

Heeey, great job, man. Loving that brushwork, as usual. ;) Heheh. Great use of saturation to pull the eye toward the ship, too. Reminds me of this one UFO video I saw on youtube... these people were in an elevator looking over a city and it was zooming around right in front of them. Way intense. Hahaha.
Keep it up! ;D

so slick work, trashy. love the clouds and water painting. very vibrant sky! I just felt that the water could use a little bit more color, maybe. would't it reflect a bit more color of the sky at least?
and sky train turned out great. looks like it was right up your alley with all those sexy clouds and futuristic glowy lights everywhere.
how many different brushes would you say you have used on the clouds? still figuring out these things.
looking forward to more.

Hey Guys!
@staticpen- Thank you sir. Man they have some really rad UFO videos. They had a video that I think was shot pretty close to Tucson that had these huge triangle shaped lights appearing over a city. I need to get that tin foil hat over my head again and buy some jugs of water :D
@monotony Thanks man and your right about that water. Couple weird things going in it. I had to step away from it for awhile to really see that stuff now. I used roughly four brushes. If there is one thing I do like about Tucson it is the sun settings. We get alot of cool cloud formations here so I take photos often for inspiration. Look up some Maxfield Parrish for cool cloud paintings...guy is damn amazing. Dude is one of my number one sources for inspiration right now.
So back from alittle hiatus. Got swept into the whirlwind of politics this election and that evil school...well okay it's not evil I just like saying that anyway. Anywho just been doodling alot. Starting to ramp up some work again and get back into alot of activities here and over at cghub.
I've been in a thumbnail mood lately. Doing those long studies just brought me down. I like being fast and just banging out quick ideas. So I planning on doing far more of these especially the ship and environments. The stronger thumbs I'll then do more full blown illustrations. I plan on doing three illustrations from this batch of thumbs. Any thoughts on what stands out to you guys I would appreciate.

This is another portrait piece I wanted to work on. I'm still sorta trying to work out my progress for these kind of pieces. I think I'm getting alittle better at it but one of friends did point I tend to paint things flat when it comes to faces. There is sometimes points were I think I get sloppy when building up the face...so still learning my process. Anyway leanred alot again from this.

So...college semester is OVER....*woop*...hey and it's almost Christmas!!!...*double woop*
Anyway I'm going to be real happy with graduating out of there next spring. I really need to move on and get the hell out there and start doing what I really enjoy doing most. So I gave it some thought and decided to really start honing my works even more into environments.......I absolutely love doing this stuff. Got some industrial stuff underway also.
So another update today from me. I think this is a step up for me alittle bit. I struggled doing really industrial cities with all those lights for quite awhile. I always got frustrated on how the heck I was going to do all those buildings and flying ships of traffic. Anywho let me know what you guys think.

@staticpen- Hey man good to hear from you and see you back here. Daniel Cacouault work is pretty sweet...I bookmarked his page. The lights are pretty easy actually. I'll get a small tut together for that. Basically I block in the building shape first and in a new layer I draw lines over the building and take the eraser tool and erase parts of the lines to make them look like lights...erm sorta in a nutshell there.

Nice landscapes you got going. I think it would add alot more depth to you're artwork if you use the tricks of atmospheric perspective, as well as using colour to separate foreground from background.
For example in your treehouse/bridge piece you ahve made the treehouse as satuarted and pretty much the same colour as the foreground grass. it would add more depth if the treehouse was bluer because it seems to be getting misty from the water below.

@rattus Thanks man:)
So getting my ish together again today and setting up a weekly planner. I'm gonna start going by the golden rule and giving myself itleast three hours to do drawings everyday. It's go time for me. No if's or buts and using college as a excuse not to stay on top of my drawings and paintings anymore. Must...overcome!
Anyway I'm gonna get more chatty on here. I'm gonna try to explain a little bit more how I go about doing stuff now.
So real diversion from me the last couple of weeks. I wanted to walk away from the screen and get back down to the nitty-gritty basics again. I've been taking a oil painting class offered at my college and I've been slowly getting into the groove of it. I discovered on the way though that I don't react to well to the oder-less turbentine or thinners. I already have a bad allergy problem in Tucson but last week I got pummeled hardcore by it. Worst I ever had it in years. Stuffy head, severe sore through, crap in my chest...it sucked!!! I think Tucson hates me sometimes. Never had allergies in New Jersey.
I'm still slightly confused with what I need and don't need. I ordered Walnut oil and and walnut alkyd medium and they are my best friends right now with the oils. No toxins or sniffles and the last painting I did using the two things had a pretty good result I thought. It doesn't seem like I would need anything else. I don't like going by any of the methods or materials that have chemicals so I'm sorta looking at old school methods. More environment friendly and green. Anywho if there are oil painters here any advice on stuff to try out would be neat and appreciated. I still consider myself a newbie to this but it is refreshing.
So I found out with the Walnut Alkyd medium that it's also good to use to clean your brushes with. I had a extra bottle of it and it does take most of the oils off the brushes. A little soap a water does the rest of the trick of making your brushes nice and clean. Walnut Alkyd is great with drying. I was shocked to find one of my oil paintings dry the day after using it.
I'm also rediscovering how weak I am at working big. I'm okay drawing big but when it comes to painting big with oils are acrylics...gah...I always run into walls. I really like working at small sizes. I seem to be able to really detail things more comfortably around like 11x17 on 13x19 or smaller. I feel like I can push around the paint better and also faster. When I get to sizes in 18x24 I think I get impatient trying to speed up things and I end up getting a mesh in the long run. Oddly enough this isn't the case with watercolors and inks though. I always like working with watercolors or inks on any sizes. So something to look into there.
So before I go the walnut oil and alkyd medium this was one of my first oil paintings...a onion. I do really like how you can thin the oils so they almost act like watercolors. The painting looked alright when it was still wet...it looks dull now that it dryed out.
604681
604683
After that I did a apple study using only the walnut oil and walnut alkyd medium. I thought this was a way better attempt.
604689
604690
So both of these guys I did on watercolor paper 12x18 with a layer of gesso.
Got my next still-life set up for this weekend.

March 1st, 2009, 01:38 PM
Hey Joey glad to hear that the new tablet is working. Acrylics are cool man!
Yeah I know that's ghetto that I didn't get to participate in my own topic I suggested. I just let school and allergies burn me the last couple of days. I often let school work get in my way but that's a crappy excuse so I'm changing that. I can make plenty of time for those activities really. How come the poll isn't up yet? Anywho I was going to poke my head in when it's up. They did some cool pieces there.
So I'm trying to wrap up two more pieces that I had sketched for awhile. I wanted to do a ship illustration and one more sci-fi illustration.
couple thumbnail and quick sketches. I love those prismacolors markers. Last post I was talking about how I hate smelly stuff most of the time...but I love the smell of those markers. Anyway messing around with them and pen.
606832
This other piece I had on the back-burner. I didn't save too many steps on this one. I learned that fog is really cool. I'm learning if you do it right the dodge and burn are great. I always made it a point to literally avoid those tools for awhile in ps.
So yeah once I get those two others done I want to start doing more quick studies again. It's good in all to do more completed works but I need to do faster works also and get speedier as well. I've been neglecting some character and anatomy work also. I got my Hogarth books out again:)

Thanks for checking the SB out, i appreciate it. I really like the tree studies, and there is a lot of interesting creative stuff in here. I think the figures and head studies could use some work in portion and perspective, but those are hard and take time and practice. so keep it up. Try to avoid straightening of figures that are at a diagonal 3/4 view, and squint for value. very enjoyable sketchbook.

March 1st, 2009, 03:22 PM
hey, cool updates mate.
great to see some traditional paints in here. makes me want to try myself.
maybe it's just the photo but I think the onion could benefit from some more bright and saturated colors. anyway a really good start again.
and really cool last scene. the water looks a bit solid but really nice mood and colors.
keep sharing! oh and I think I've said it before but I loove how you paint clouds. :)

March 2nd, 2009, 12:21 PM
@michaeljared- Thanks for coming by also man. I loved your work man. Good pointers on the figures. I know a lot of my figures can come as stiff sometimes and that straightening.
@monotony- cool to see you back here. Traditional paints are fun man, I highly recommend them. You right about the onion...it doesn't pop...not nearly as much like the apple. It's dried now so I might go back in to add more to it. I loves clouds man, glad you like them also. I gotta stop by your sb also...your work is getting sick man!
So took out some books again. I think I have made a little jump in my environment pieces. I'm feeling better about them but my figures still need serious work and so do the critters. Anyway I made some observations because with the environments I didn't really study too much from books on how-to-methods or ways to draw the environment. I studied more from real life and photography books like national geographic and watched some videos on painting environments. I was able to pick up on watching others paint more then say reading step by step methods in books. Then I did a lot of pieces from my imagination. I still pretty much do environment study everyday day also. So that means get people in the sketchbook everyday also. I think I learned more also by looking at just really amazing work and trying to figure out how they worked.
Anyway the Hogarth and Loomis are all cool but I think I have a different way of learning then from looking at written material and step by step illustrations. So gonna start drawing more people at my campus and get my head around this stuff and find my own methods and start drawing them from imagination also. I want to change things up and try different things.
So I got the ship designed narrowed down. Gonna start the illustration on that tonight when I get back from my oil painting class. I think the next couple weeks I'm gonna work late nights. I like working at night for some weird reason.
These are studies I forgot to post. Did these pretty loosely with the pen.

nice stuff dude. a suggestion, throw your environments into black and white for a sec while painting, your atmospheric perspective could be pushed further, ie your sky may be a little too dark and shapes iin the distant are often too dark for their position.

Ah, I totally know what you're going through, man. I move around a lot, and I've never really had the opportunity to draw or paint with anyone. I've kind of been on my own, self taught for pretty much my whole life. All the inspiration and drive to keep going is either internal or forums like this one.
Also, I'm kind of deciding between two things similar to what's on your mind... California (which is my home state) and all the awesome work for artists there, or Portland, which is where my most loved people are. The thing is, for me, happiness is more about people and love than art, so picking art and California is kind of like the 'money' side of the equation for me.
But yeah, I don't want to go on and on about this in your thread. I've basically worked something out where I can do some Portland stuff and then eventually move down to California. I think for people like you and me, it's worth it to take that shot, as you were saying, to kind of go for something that pushes you a little bit. Keeps you on the edge a little bit, or out of your comfort zone. Comfort zones are for naps. If you sit there too long you end up hibernating, no? We've got to get out there!
Great stuff, mate.
Trashy
March 9th, 2009, 04:01 PM
Thanks Staticpen,
I totally agree true happiness is more about people and love than art. I agree with the rule family comes first also first and foremost. I was just talking about being happy with what you do and what you you really really want to do as a artist. The thing is I do know talented people here but I've also heard how a lot of them get lulled into graphic design because there aren't other options for them and all there creative talents just go out the door here. The main reason why I want to go to California is get my feet wet...who knows though...I'm sending out applications though to people in Boston also. I'm really open to going anywhere, I just want more experience. I want to understand how the studious work that sorta thing. My heart lies on the East Coast though. I was born in New Jersey and always loved the ocean there:)
Almost all my relatives are there also. I've come to the conclusion I'm probably going to travel a lot. It's a uphill climb for everyone really and will take time. I think in the long run though I'll settle on the East Coast. There something about spot's especially like Ocean City...that place is just majestic and I have so many memories there as a kid. But yeah it's tricky, there are plenty of things you gotta think about and work out. I sorta talked about this with my close friends at college also sometimes.
haha...yeah I just go on sometimes. I'm been pretty sick lately so that gets me riled up and I ramble haha. Allergies are destroying me this year.
Ah thanks man:)
I'm working my fingers too much with the typing. Time to start working those paint strokes!
So not done yet but I didn't make the deadline on the COW but I'm gonna wrap this up today. I'm messing around with painter again for the heck of it.

Man, your trees are always so boss. Really should draw more trees, haha.
But are you kidding mate? You're in love with the New Jersey ocean? hahaha. Aw, man. I've lived around there a couple times. had a roofing job once in New Jersey. Foreman was a surfer, so he brought his wetsuit along once and let me borrow it. The house we were roofing was right next to the ocean, so I went surfing on my lunch break. It was cold and miserable! Haha. But it sure made a good memory. Can't take that away.
But yeah, Boston would be a sweet place to work. I really like it up there. Lived in Wareham once, which isn't too, too far south from there.
But anyway, yeah dude. I know what you mean about getting your feet wet. I've been reading On The Road, and it's really making me want to take chances and just hit the road for Portland (big surprise, haha).

Ah! I didn't know about that last landscape post. I would have come by. It's really gorgeous, man, well done. You've got a good eye for color. Your landscapes are always so fantastic in nature, with super saturated colors and fun themes. :) The only thing that gets me about it is the main structure in the composition is leaning relative to the horizon. The others are pretty much straight up and down, and look structurally sound, but the big one looks like it could fall over. :O! But on the whole, you've got atmospheric perspective and city details and all that good stuff, so I really like your painting. :D
But yeah, bring on the life studies! People, I mean. The best thing I can recommend for learning the planes of the face is to paint old men. Young women like the one you posted have such soft curves that the geometry of the face isn't really prevalent.
Cheers!

Thanks man...dude...your seriously tearing it up with your environments lately also man. Hey good spot on the main structure. I think on of my biggest weaknesses and my mother said she did the same is I draw crooked sometimes. Haha...yeah that also looks like the leaning tower of Pisa.

Yeah...I failed with that portrait a day but I'm gonna start one today! Gonna do the portraits in oil. I just want to go so old school right now and learn some traditional methods and mastery ways. I gotta admit I feel like I've been missing out on some real cool stuff. Old people you say, that's a good idea! Brought some charcoals too:)
I got a tiny animation I'm working also. I got a important deadline approaching for a internship application so I'll get that up for laughs also.
But yeah every time I do portraits digitally I just keep getting hung up on them. I spend hours meddling with it over and over again. Eventually the portrait clicks after like...10 hours or more! I'm missing vital steps in the beginning and rushing in like a mad monkey with no plan. Even when I do plan...it just doesn't work. I know I don't have alot of experience with people...I'm always drawings tree's and environments around me. There's a Starbucks near by my home and a couple other places so I'm gonna start hitting them once I get some stuff cleared off my desk. I wish there were real serious drawing groups here in Tucson. I tried starting one at school but we all got too busy with other things to keep it together.
So my first Moleskine sketchbook is complete and sitting on a blank bookshelf waiting to be filled up more by them. I probably brought the coolest sketchbook on the planet couple days back also...no seriously...this thing amazes me.
Here's the last doodles
640130
So the other sketchbook I got was the larger watercolor Moleskine sketchbook that has 72 pages...that's 144 if you count both sides. The book takes anything, acrylics, oils, ink, charcoals...anything really. I never thought of owning a sketchbook that's only 8x5 inches and doing painting in it but man was I missing out. This is fun and honestly the size is perfect! This sketchbook rules!
Started messing with it over the weekend, did two studies in it. I'm hoping to start on the third study soon.

interesting studies trashy ,
i noticed that you have some color problems , you are using some really acid colors , that in combination burn trough the retina like napalm trough Iraq .
Take for example the last one with the magenta sky and blue landscape , you should probably dim one of them down or find a tone popper that it doesn't react so harsh , usually when you are using colors like this you need to find a fix between them

Hey guys!
Back from alittle hiatus, I had to catch with college work and the like...still got alittle bit more before summer comes around. Just when I thought I was done...they pull me back in. Got one more class to take this fall for my associates and then plan my way out of Tucson. Right now I'm contemplating my next move. I'm eyeballing the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle and then possibly The Art Center of Design in Pasadena later on. I personally like the idea of the atelier training. It is hard but true to the methods and I heard some great things about that place in Seattle and the other ateliers. community college>Atelier>big art school...seems like the right way to go. I need the training in the atelier I feel. I wanna get put through the reamer hardcore. So small small update here. I'm working on this agave right now in the oil painting class. 25x25 roughly...photo is meh...

Some abstract doodles in my sb in also. I found they have life drawing sessions in the Tucson area so I'll hit those soon. 7$ to get in so not bad at all. Hope things are well and I'll get more updates on here soon.

Yeah, dude! Seattle sounds great. I'll be up in Portland this summer (and probably on for a year or so total) and I'm sure me and my buddies will visit Seattle a couple times. I love it up there. Maybe we could do something if we were all up there at the same time.
And if you eventually go down to pasadena, that'd be even crazier... It's not exactly a bike ride away (380 odd miles) from Frisco, where and friend and I will be for Academy of Art University down the line, but retardedmonkey here on CA.org is thinking about giving Art Center a go as well, and Chris Sears is down in LA. We, again, could all go do some drawing sessions or something sometime. Crazy. :O
Anyway, I wanted to say that I dig the painting, the doodles and your Godfather quote.

Hey guys I'm back!
One more week and the semester is done.
Mischeviouslittleelf-Hey man I appreciate that. Thanks for coming on by.
staticpen -sweet man! Honestly I gotta work on my savings but two to three years I might be able to make the move. By the end of this year I might make a plan to to hang there for a couple days and go around the area. I seriously want to check that Gage Academy out.
So yeah...like...wow. I took that oil painting class at my community College and am completely detoxing from all the digital stuff. I'm just outright fascinated by the ateliers now. I feel like I've been missing out on all this fantastic stuff and methods. I got my copy of "classical painting atelier" by Juliette Aristides and think it might be the best book I own right now. I already ordered the "Drawing Atelier" so that will be arriving in the next couple of days. Then I did something really insane last night and I even did it without blinking a eye. I put 130$ down on a copy of "Charles Bargue and Jean-Leon Gerome: Drawing Course". Yes this is a art book over 100$ that is very hard to get but just went back into reprint very recently. Seriously I felt like something was nudging me to buy this book. I attend to start my first cast drawing very soon from this book when I get it. I've never felt so poor and so happy at the same time:D
So I've been...well...cleaning alot. I wanted to make a more proper area for doing paintings and drawings so I started messing around in the garage. Note to self: I owe my parents a serious percentage in my work when it starts selling :D
I'll take photos of the setup later.
I've did some doodles here and there I should scan. I did a quick study of drape put in a knot here. I pretty much drew it right when I woke up in the morning. I really liked drawing something in the morning...sorta got my brain kick started for the rest of the day.

yeah dude, take your time saving and going at your own pace. It's funny though, mine and my friend's route back to California has been meandering a bit, and at this point it looks like we're gonna spend a day in Tuscon, heheheh. My friend has a friend there. My guess is we'll be there Thursday the 21st.
Looking forward to all the new stuff you'll be posting soon! And yeah... drawing in the morning really kicks a day off, huh? Cheers! :teeth:

staticpen Oh man I should check here more often. I totally didn't know you were briefly here in Tucson. Ha, 21st was actually a rainy day here in Tucson, it was really awkward but nice.
God...gotta update here more...gotta update my blog...I got so lazy...argh. So how is everybody? So starting doing more painting again. Instead of doing these hardcore studies I wanted to experiment so I did a little robot in oils. I was messing around on Rives BFK after looking at some James Jean work. I did a sketch first and inked it and then did a wash and then finally oiled it...and then detailed and touched it up in artrage...haha I'll cut down two of those steps next time but it was insanely fun.
Tuesday I'm driving up to the drawing studio to do some life drawing sessions. I was thinking this Sunday but it's too early and far of a drive for me.

Hey guys,
small portrait dump here. I'm starting to get into the mode of drawing faces some more. One error I noticed avlot in the faces that I do and other things is I draw lopsided on the left side of my drawings. It is always on the left side I'm noticing. So the good thing is I'm it least noticing it more and trying to correct it. Mirrors come in very handy sometimes. Anyway some studies here. The top three were from my imagination and quick, haha you could probably tell that easily. The four are from ref. I was trying to maybe be slightly more realistic with them. I think they got better when I did more. I'm pretty happy with the last one and some of the effects I got with the pencils. More drawings to come.

yar...more updates. Gotta get the ball rolling again, sorta got into a limbo last month actually. New noodles from by new pocket sketchbook. By the way if there's any inkers here reading this give sepia ink a shot. It's really seriously cool what you can do in those tones.
694143
Honest to god I never liked sketching digital, it always felt mechanical to me so I tried to make a more organic brush for drawing in painter. I honestly gotta say the sumi-ink brushes are pretty good. I made a variant of it, works pretty nice actually.
Did a quick tree root and painted it in with the oils brushes. Still trying the grapple the brushes more. My favorite by far is the airbrush wheel, works alot like spray paint. I used to use spray cans in my real old work...actually that's not true I still use them so I really dig that look digitally if I can pull if off right. Been looking at heavy metal stuff recently again, man...Richard Corben and Jean Giraud kick ass!

Hey Yautja892
Good to hear from you man. I totally gotta get up there, I know. I saved all the information you sent me. I found some life drawing meetings here in Tucson which is real good and have been attending those...actually I got one tonight woop! Once I get my crap together I'll get my butt up there, that's a promise. I really want to hang with you guys and maybe get the chance to meet Jim Garrison if he is there.
So today I finally started setting up my first cast drawing. I'm going hardcore on studying from the life and masters. I really think I'm missing alot of stuff in my work. Pretty much things ranging from values, colors, weird perspective problems. I'm not studying enough from life and my imagination has taken over everything...I need to balance them out. Honestly since I took that oil painting class I have been in this weird loop. Even with the four oil paintings I did that was the most fun I ever had. It felt so gooooood painting traditionally. I just want to do more of it for awhile. Yeah...I'm still trying to find some work also...I've been struggling alittle here in Tucson the past month, I know it's like that everywhere. Just gotta stay focused and keep my eye on the ball. Think I'm gonna take Jasons class on the freelancing...I've been going through all these books and I feel like I keep hitting a brick wall with them.
anywho...let me get some scans of my stuff up. I gotta take photos of the current cast drawing. I'm still just setting up the center lines and box. Haven't started on the hand yet.

Okay quick update here.
one sketch from my moleskine sketchbook. There was this huge watertank that I was looking at.
737970
So here is the beginning of the cast drawing..god I took that photo badly. I got the cast to my right and the paper next to it on the left(I'm left handed). It's all taped down on gator-board. I'm still thumbing my way through the Charles Bargue drawing course trying to understand the approach to this. I got the center line set up and and then boxed in the whole drawing space. Actually I need to fix one of those lines to the right...it's off. I'm still trying to figure out how to measure everything. I actually built myself a plumbline...I'll be honest though...I have no clue how to hell to use that yet. I traced the original cast, that I can lay on my drawing when I start working on it and immediately catch mistakes on the fly. I'm using using my pencil for measurements also and just eyeballing it sometimes. That's how I'm doing it so far. Anywho...I'll spend some more time with this soon and off to life drawing. I'll get those posted up also tonight. By the way I'm using a 2h pencil for the linework and a 2b will be used for darker values.

@XuperNova- Thanks man:)
Okay so some progress shots on the cast drawing. This is indeed the challenge that I expected it would be. It really does expose your errors you might make and helps you see things more correctly in lines and where everything connects. So yeah in terms of helping you observe lines and shapes this is pretty good. I think studying from real casts will likely be better for studying a real-life lighting setting and values so I'll go onto those after doing maybe three more of these. These basically are a good starting point methinks.
So first the outline shot. I bumped the contrast alittle here. I liked how Emily G did her blocking in the shapes of also the shadows. I enjoyed that approach. Pretty much I eye-balled all of it. I wanted to make my marks before doing any measurements first. so...eyeball it first>make your mark>use measuring. I understand the real goal is to judge basically through what you see. The only measurement I did do first was getting the mid line correct. Most measurements I'm doing with the plumpline. No rulers! The only other crutch was the traced Outline of the original cast for the main outlines, I used this basically if I was in a real pickle. The traced image I would place on my cast drawing to spot errors...it doesn't work too well once you get to the small details. I won't be really using it again.
743759
It's interesting because the main part that was the trickiest for me was getting the angles straight on the stone. I noticed that I drew that section too low first...then drew it too high. I had to correct the angles quite a few times before getting it right. I should get my tri-pod next time I take a shot so the photos aren't crooked on this.

Emily G shot me this link to cast drawing. This is pretty useful information here.

@Farvus Yeah I think these will help out my observational skills a lot so I'm gonna do a couple more of these
2buiart Thanks man, yeah I think the environments are one of my stronger points...It's sorta why I think I gotta hit the people and objects harder. Thanks man for coming by.
B-Man Thanks! Those museums are great places to hang at. I remember just spending hours in the metropolitan Museum for a whole day.
So more progress on the cast. Another crummy photo...once I get this done I'll get some decent scans of this. I don't think I shot this straight so the sizes might look off slightly here on the cast drawing.
747479
The toughest part now so far is shading on the paper. I'm using this dick blick paper right now that has this texture and it seems to be tricky getting the real smooth transitions of the shades in there...even with a razor tooth sharpened pencil. So that might be something to consider when working on these is the kind of paper your using also, I'm gonna try another stock after this one. Anyway, I'm gonna needle with this some more and see if I can get those shades better. I need to do more shadowing also.
Duq
August 10th, 2009, 09:56 AM
oh man, that cast drawing is developing really nice. Although you go a weird angle between where the thumb and the finger begins. You should try some bristol for this, you can get so much value out of your pencils
This is such a good excersize, I hope you finish it. I never had the patience :D
A quick suggestion on your poses and gestures. Try to analyze the rhythm more that goes on in the pose, before you start drawing out all the masses. Try to get a feel for how the pelvis and ribcage interact, and where the curves and angles are created in the pose.
Trashy
August 10th, 2009, 11:57 AM
Hey Dug,
Yeah I'm gonna try to push that cast drawing as much as possible. I got three more to do after this one also. Hey good catch on the thumb, I did some measurements and there is a portion of that line that is off. Bristol paper sounds like a good idea. Yeah, the texture on this paper is too thick for getting those gradients in the shades. I want something smoother.
Thanks man for the comment, I hear you on getting down the rhythm on the poses. Next life drawing session I'll try harder to capture that.
Here are some better photos of this. I think I've gotten to the point where I don't want to push the values any harder. Couple of the fingers I need to smooth out and in with the eraser. There are two lines that I noticed are off, besides the thumb and the line that extends upwards the upper right area (the circular part of the arm) is off a little bit also. I'm gonna make those changes and then call it done and head off to the next one.

Alright this is as far as I'm gonna push this one. I know I learned a lot from this first one. It's tricky doing those on your own but give it a shot, you do learn quite a bit from it. Depending on how things go I'll be heading to California this year around fall or early next year. I'll be in Phoenix for the comic-con coming up. So if I got time I hope I can stop by the doctor sketchy if it's close by. I'll be there a Friday and Saturday.
Sorknes- No prob and since I dragged my sorry butt back on here I'll check your sb again.
Cacodaemonia- Hey Chelsea, ah your too nice.
Faust- Thanks man, dude last time I checked you were studying hardcore! Haha...I still consider myself a slacker...see...I got proof also...it took me nearly two months to update this thing. Must...focus...like laser beams!!!

More stuff...Just had to get all of it in a folder again.
Recent master studies...ah I really need to do more of these. I'm timed myself on the second portrait. A serious problem is i take to looong with paintings like these...especially faces. I keep meandering and meandering until I practically destroy it. I find setting some kind of a limit or set amount of time is helping me but I know there are still errors I need to work on...I know...those lips are messed up and that chin. But yeah I know I said this before...I need to paint more faces...plain and simple...they should be better and will get better this year.

Hey guys.
Some I'm covering quite a bit on Loomis taking the ideas behind the studies and then applying them to my own studies from the head. So first is from the book and then I did a study afterward breaking down the face. Still shows I got things to learns. I think this will be a good study to continue.

@Surion- Thanks man.
Well speaking of Loomis I just wanted to hit the head very hard this week.
I really am trying to soak my head up with these methods to understand the head more. Another still-life also from me.

Hey Guys,
Wow it's been awhile. A lot has been going on in my life the past couple of months. It's pretty shocking actually. In a couple months I'm heading off to California it looks like for good. First time moving away from home...exciting and nerve wrecking stuff. Got almost a full pass to go to LCAD and I'll have gmonon, mb, concept design academy all in driving distance. But yeah getting ready to move. Been filling out tons of paperwork and essays. Seriously trying to get back into major studies again...I'm still slacking with anatomy. Been dealing with three computer blow-outs(losing plenty of art) also among...oh man...many many other things. Hope to get more active on CA again...I really do miss the activities and everything.
Some stuff I've been dong lately anyway.

So when my computer died on me a third time this year I took a step back from the whole digital thing. I was pretty disillusioned by the whole and it made me look at traditional. I just didn't want a damn thing to do with computers and I had 25 cheap canvas panels in the room. I decided to go through all of them doing oil portraits. You'll see the progression from stinkage from alright. It was a good exercise and it felt good being from the computer.

Well that's it for now. Hopefully more later.
