I would say your chances of starting out as a concept artist are a lot lower if you are only willing to accept jobs that can be done over the internet. Once you establish your career working in-house somewhere, then you may have the option to work from home. But first, the art directors that you work with are going to need to be able to look over your shoulder several times a day to make sure you are producing what they need.

Interesting to see this thread considering I just got paid today. wooohooo!

From experience, I think the chances of getting any arts job online is corellated to how effective you are in finding gigs and selling your skills.

You've probably figured this out already but a fast computer/online connection is recommended (you'll likely do a lot of large file size ftpeing). And decide how you want to get paid. The easier for your clients to pay you the better, so maybe something like having a paypal or online banking account is worth considering for your business.

There's a lot more to it like using contracts, self-promotion techniques (testimonials, etc.), finding out your rate, how not to get exploited, etc. Do forum searches to find more info in detail.

Good luck.

Speaking of which, I am currently doing a job over the internet, and just the other day I went over my monthly bandwidth limit, at which time my ISP throttled my speed down to 56k levels. The client was not too happy that it took me 2 hours to send them a preview that they needed in 20 minutes... so do make sure you have a fast internet connection that is available all the time.

Regarding your initial question; all of my internet based work is with people I already know and have worked with, or I've been recommended from people I've worked with. Most of the work that I'm qualified for isn't advertised at all but rather just farmed out to the 'network' of friends and colleages. Maybe you'll have luck with just emailing your portfolio around to studios, but nothing beats good old fashioned face to face networking.
