Topic: Coleridge's Xanadu
Due date: Saturday February 3rd

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

A terrifyingly loaded poem. I'll do it!

Love the poem. This sounds a like fun challenge, I'm up for it.

I tried putting in a lantern in the foreground but it was too distracting and i couldn't get it to look right.
Corrick I love your concept, It really looks like a sacred river.

Kicek Great sweeping shapes and colours.

I have done a picture of Xanadu and would really love to submit it to your scrutiny. However I am too thick to work out how I can send it. Could you tell me how?

Click on "Post Reply", then (if you're linking to an image already on the web) click on the little mountain-against-yellow-sky icon, paste the URL of the image, and hit OK. If you're uploading an image, click the little attachment icon. "Preview Post will give you a look at what it'll resemble once you post it. Now you can click "Submit Reply".

Can't wait to see it!

The three pieces posted so far are promising - I think they all can be taken to a level where each one of them would be great pieces! Corrick - your sketch looks sweet - make it a winner!

Hungry Sparrow, you probably won't be able to find the "attachment manager" button in this thread. Therefore, get an account with an image hosting service such as photobucket or image shack. When you have uploaded your image there, you will probably find a field displaying image tags (like IMG something or other). Copy that field and paste it into your post and the image should show up. This is another way to solve your problem in case the URL approach doesn't seem to work for some reason.

Yes, for the comm. activities, no attachments, but in general, you can. Thanks for the catch, arttorney.

Its really hard to make polls if the images aren't outside hosted...thus the attachment manager doesn't work in here....

now post them Pleasure domes!

"Yes, for the comm. activities, no attachments, but in general, you can. Thanks for the catch, arttorney."

No problem. Didn't want anybody to get crazy looking for something that wasn't there.

*chuckle*... I wonder, after the confusion, if he'll submit anything. I'm just all sorts of curious now.

Larkin2 - Thanks! *beams* Rather surprising too, since I've never even seen a sacred river.
Dragon - Danke. Err... I'll give it a shot. Hope the update does it justice.

Truly great stuff from everyone thus far... Kicek, I think I accidentally fell in love with your brush strokes. This could be awkward.

really nice so far, kicek, i like yours though i dont see a dome or hint of a river or the sea it leads to.. corrick's is a good perspective on it, though lacking in surface 'yumminess'

Whoa, hold the presses! I just got up and checked what's new... Corrick that is delicious! Mmmman! That scrumptious cone of light coming through the dome and the subtle bloom on the chinese lion statues! Yummmy in my tummy!

Kicek I don't know if you composition is all that hot right now. Just about half the images space is background and the other element is foreground. There is no real middleground and the image looks very static. Lack of diagonals - which can be fine - it's not like every image has to be dynamic! But ask yourself if the image right now would be worth puttin 20 further hours into it? Best is probably to make a bunch of thumbnail sketches until you find something golden or platinum :)

Hope that makes sense.

Larkin: That is a strong composition! Like what you're doing with the darkness in the fg and the lovely yellow warm light in the bg. Now it's up to you to make it happen! Make sure to give us something to hint at in the fg (some cold light and some detail) and of course the dome needs to have detail and highlights!

You're all giving up too soon. There are good entries, to be sure, but there are also two remaining days.

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down a green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced,
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail

I don't know about the "giving up" part, but still, well spoken. Yes indeed, there are two more days. It's nice to see so many entries this early on, and so many good ones at that, but the final finish remains to be seen. And don't forget there's even more to the poem! I'm still wondering where the caverns of ice are going to pop up.

Devilmonkey - Don't speak too soon. It's early yet, but thank you just the same.
Dragon4lunch - Thank you. Always did love the lighting part. To the detriment of the rest of the work, sometimes.
Mainloop - Yeah, no yumminess, contrary to Dragon, I agree. Still getting the hang of painterly-ness.
Kicek - I'm still fiddling, all the way to madness. Thanks! I'm still in love with your brush strokes. And the fact that you're making us all look like a pack of slackers (save for Devilmonkey) with not two but three outstanding versions. Nicely done.
Arttorney - You have two days left... :)

Yeah! I have something kind of moody in mind but my drawing class was tonight, I want to enter IDW, and there's a hockey game tomorrow night. I'm probably going to have to go without doing productive day job stuff until the middle of Saturday at least.

Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honeydew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
