nice stuff here! those drawings of people from life(?) are looking good, try not to be so scruffy with the rendering though, try to make clean and even strokes when rendering.

The watercolors are the strongest pieces IMO, try to do a few pieces with more brushwork and less drawing. Try to think of shapes and light ( where is your light source?) to describe the form and it may help. Try a few pieces where you only paint the shadows and let the white of the page be your light. Draw from life as much as you can, and when you draw out of your head try to use what you've learned from the life studies. Hope that helps.

Keep tearing it up bro and thanks for stopping by my book. :)

Thanks for stopping my SB man. I really like what you have here. The faces had become stronger and the watercolor looks promising. Try to increase the value (light/ shade) when you render, to give it more depth. I know with color is tough, but just keep at it!

I see what you mean about using light and shadow in your own work- I'll definitely work on it. You've got great lines, and your angel illustration has a wonderful visual quality- texture and the small use of color is very stimulating.

JoeEffect- I couldnt find Bridgeman tutorials just yet, but I did find these.

this one has some pretty drawing tips, and links to where you can buy the books. http://www.thestoryboardartist.com/tutorial.html

This one is a list of links if you scroll down, they lead to many good anatomy tutorials, including the loomis books.http://www.tsofa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=49&start=0&sid=b6ce58bf976d127c879 5f728e41f9dcf

the Loomis Books online- probably the most helpful books that are out of print now. When you get there, theres a link to the loomis book on this page, and they are in printable format. Enjoy.http://fineart.sk

And here is my favorite figurative artist. He is just awesome. Kevin Chen his name.http://www.characterdesigns.com/inde...page=tutorials

Hey man! Thanx for the sweet comments in my SB!

I love the colour pencil sketches. Are they 'prisma colours'? I cant remeber the correct name but I know its something to do with 'prisma'.

The sketch of the lady's torso in the censored picy is spot on! How ever it is the hand draw font which lets that image down. Have you ever tried using Photoshop? You could of scaned the image and then added the font. Remebering to tweak the font so it dosn't stand out to much from the sketch?

Keep up the sweet work man!

The eye in post 39 looks really... wet! Lovely!

I don't know, but I think you're cutting a bit from the shape of the hip in the censored-pic. You get a very concave shape there (I don't know who said it originally but there are no real concave shapes in a human's body) and so it looks like she's missing some hip bone on the other side.

Hey

very nice start man
I like that rain effect and your eyes and nose studies. Good watercolors also.

You asked me about anatomy books of Gottfried Bammes.

They are great for learning, i recommend:
"Die Gestalt des Menschen. Lehr- und Handbuch der Künstleranatomie"
That is quite a standart book and has some great educational anatomy stuff in it. Despite its popularity, it is not available in english, and it is quite expensive, especially with shipping. You would have to pay about 120 dollars, i would recommend to get some cheaper bridgeman first or some free internet Loomis. If you really are serious about this i would say that Bammes is worth its price.
You can google it quickly if you want to purchase it

Cheers

thnx for stopping by my SB

your lines are very nice
i see that you're working on building a sense of form with the color pencils and watercolors. I would like to see some smoother transitions and less paper showing through. your eye studies are very nice.

to sum it up great linework, now your shading has to catch up!

Thanks for visiting my sketchbook. You're doing pretty good with the watercolors. A lot of people find it difficult, but I love it. My suggestion is to draw a little lighter, then paint. The great thing about watercolor is you can lose edges so easily, this is essential in watercolor. Dab a little CLEAN water next to your colored stroke while it is still damp, the water itself will do its own thing. Then, tada! Lost edge. You can also put down a different color and see how the two colors blend and interact. Practice this so you can predict the outcome.
One more tip on watercolors-materials really do matter. The papers you use are the first to upgrade. Then the paints. If you are not already using artist grade paints, I suggest you do...when you can afford. Dickblick and jerrysartarama have good prices on their websites.
Hope this helped.
Keep painting!

Your use of different media is very inspiring, I like the expressions of the drawings in post #38. The studies in post 39 look very good, maybe you could experiment with a more tone-based approach instead of your line-based way and enhance the dimensionality a bit. You also need to work on your mouthes and ears, identify the individual forms that they are composed of and show how they overlap and connect through differnt line weight/accents. Other than this, you have a very interesting expressive style, keep it up!

Thanks for dropping by my SB! You've got a good book going on this thread. Good work on the watercolor washes, you seem to have a pretty good handle on the planes of the face. Sounds like your job is taking up a lot of your free time.. just keep plugging, I find that if I even if I only get ten minutes a day to draw, that regular routine of just grinding away pays off when I have more time to really dig in and work.

Making good progress man, good to see such determination.
Think you could do without the cross-hatching, but if you stick with it, use to describe the form better.
Imagine casting a net over your forms.

Hey man, thanks again for the hit up on my sb. Great use of the watercolors, a medium i couldn't master in another lifetime.
Your female studies and pieces and parts are well constructed and really show off your technical abilites in showing volumes and making them feel convincing. The one suggestion i'd have is composing the entire figure, either through thumbs or a more finished piece. Seems like you've got heads and parts..but not the whole figure. Just a thought.
Keep up the good work man!
Cheers!

Joe- Sorry about the job, you do what you gotta do. Thanks for stopping in to my book again, I appreciate the support. :) I really like the back on this last post, one of your best posts so far. One small crit that you might look at again is the placement of her hips, looks like the torso is a little long and the hips are a little low, it's not off by much but you might want to check it again.
Keep them posts regular, I'll be looking in. :)

May 2nd, 2007, 11:06 AM
hey Joe,

Good studies, the sense of form is pretty strong. This recent illustration has a good pose and movement, and it could be a much strong image if there was a bit more contrast. Darker darks and lighter lights maybe? The figure kind of gets lost in the texture of the background, maybe try something to delineate her form?

Anyway, looking forward to more.
