Can't wait to see it coloured.....the guy with the sword doesnt' look terrified enough....the look on his face looks like "oh brother here's another pest I have to deal with".....or maybe that's just me.....maybe he's just a confident hero.....

Wow.. amazing piece. I almost feel sorry for the little guy. Hope it's not a long way down. ;]

Nice dynamic composition. It might be even stronger if you rotated it CCW a little so that the creature was higher in the picture plane, rather than them both being on the same horizontal level.

This freakin rocks!
I think it would juice it up some, if you had some dust particles, and little rocks, flying from the cliff (around the soldiers feet) towards the creature. So it looks like he just swept around the corner at lightning speed and with so much power, that the elements around him can't help but gravitate towards him. Y'know that slow motion effect they use in movies to add drama...

DUDE! that monster looks FANTASTIC!
the proportions on the guy are a bit funny,, but the expression in his body language is awsome and compensates for it well.
also id like to see you put the same ammount of attention and detail/expression in your human faces as you do your creature faces.
your getting super good man.

hey
thanks for the crits and kudos. I appreciate them.
As far as color goes. It'lll be a while before i get to add color. I am on a serious time crunch to get 80 more of these bad boys done by Sep. I definitely want to return to them and do some color makeovers.
Lono thanks bro. and 3bleadpencil: I love drawing the human figure as much as the the human face more than anything, so I do regret not putting more emotion and effort into his face, but I was really stoked to be doing this and being directed to reinvent the Chimera for this piece.
Elwell: true!! thanks
'ink: again I think I spent my energies on the creature. I definitely will return to this piece at a better time to work it. thanks!
capone: it is done in 2h and 2b mechanical pencil on smooth Bristol board 8x11 inches. I then scan it in to PS and darken up the levels so it will print well. I also use a mechanical eraser to get the little sharp hi-lites.
pencil rules!
Again thanks guys. I really have been pushing myself to improve. It really helps to work with guys like Glenn Angus, Dan Hay daily to really "see" more. They have a work ethic and style that really makes me want to improve.
So take advantage of opportunities to surround yourself with good artists, it does rub off.
Thanks,
Mitch

yeh this is sweet, awesome work on the creature the expression on the face and the glint in the eye really reads. He is one brave dude holding his ground with that thing armed with only a sword!

July 4th, 2003, 09:07 PM
ha ha Davi, yer a crazy sumbitch. thanks!
dodge: thanks, i guess it's kind of in the spirit of Frazetta to show the warrior at odds against an impossible opponent. Maybe a dagger would be more to that spirit eh? he he
duracel: thanks, Good eye. I see it. but maybe he's smirking and his face a little turned at the nose? no? ok. :D
mysen and glenn k : thanks mates!!

Finally! I, along with many others, have been waiting on some work from you Mitch. Thanks a lot for posting this piece, it has great motion and sense of confined space. I agree with the statement on the man's face, it should have more emotion one way or the other. Rage, terror, fear, something to let us know what is going on with him.
Far be it for me to crit this calibur of work, but I want to feel more the guy's emotion.
Excellent work!

the guys right arm bicep is HUGE! tone it down a bit..
all on emotion is nice.. like someone said, some facial emotion would help the peice.. I would love to see this coloured.. I think it would bring out the depth a little better.. nice sketch on whole.. keep em coming m..

mcotie,
I love the flying lion dragon, but the human character lacks the same power.
The main problem is within the exaggragated limbs(arms and legs). One would expect him to have a much larger breast and heavier hips, but his body looks rather childish compared to his other bodyparts. Also, his swordwielding arm has a much too long biceps. YouŽll have to shorten it. And take some care about where his hair begins at the side of his face, it's too far back. Push it a little forward, thus will the proportions of the face get a better aspect.
Good work!

mitch, nice one :)
good job on the chimera!
there could be a bit more of a connection between monster and soldier. right now it's like "ROAR, im the huge monster chimera, i jump around corners in dynamic poses and will crash puny humans with uber-power" and "oh, it's jumping round corners, the damn cheater!"
he would fit the scenery better if he had similarly powerful movement and a bit more fierceness to himself :)

Way to pack in the energy, Mitch! I love the creature, and the whole feel to the piece- your new Delta Pledge Name is... Mr. Pencil! I took the presumptuous liberty of analyzing the proportions of the warrior, which look pretty good, once you angle the shins back. A lot of that palaver is just my process- bear with me. I'd also raise and rotate his right foot- he's too planted with both feet flat on the ground to be so active, if yaknowdimean... I added my miserable two cents about the wing anatomy and I've got to agree that the mountains and rocks need more character. But then again, I just like drawing crazy rocks and mountains- guess I've read way too many Blueberry stories! :).http://www.chukw.com/chimera.gif

aww man. chukw! I made changes before looking at this ultra cool crit. I'm not too sure what you mean by the hoof/claw thing though. I guess the closest one does resemble a claw rather than a hoof. It needs to say"hoof" though since it is 1/3 goat. Thanks man.
I really wish I could make all of these nice changes the all of you have thrown my way, but I really have to move on.
I made some changes based on what you guys threw at me and Marko, I could learn alot from you. I beefed up the guy a some by adding a little armor, I feel I may have lost a few things that I liked in the old one by doing this; I really liked the little drop shadow from the Chimera on his right thigh, by putting armor on, this lost its finesse. I also liked his musculature in his arm even with the long bicep.
I fixed the perspective on the Chimera's nose, which I agree looks much better.
cucaracha: ha ha the phallus mountain eh, should I make it less vague and more phallus:D
cassandra and strych9ine: thanks!!! and stryche, don't forget your pants.

Mitch,
ahh, fuck, now I see where the problem is. The head of the main character is too huge. Cut it out in Photoshop and scale it a little and youŽll see what I mean. Sorry for the mess;)
Best!
Marko
P.S.: Thanks for the praise man, your welcome!

Marko I think it might be his big 70s hair. But thanks again.
thanks guys here's another one for ya. I won't be posting all 96+ of these just a few here and there. But I liked this one especially. It was lots of fun to do.

Your pencils are astonishingly gorgeous.
I really like the "chunky" feel your pieces have. Nice, thick, solid forms -- no waffling. Very confident.
I'd like to see a bit more contrast between your shadows/mid-tones.
Other than that, I really can't see a single flaw. Your work is as solid as a block of frozen sperm. I have one in the freezer right now, and trust me, it's solid.

The sense of form in your pencil work is so solid. Absolutely amazing work.
Something about his left hand seems odd. I can't quite put my finger on it (excuse the pun), could be that the palm goes straight into the forearm with no wrist area.
Anyway, very inspiring stuff. :chug:

hey mitch, wow!
i think most of the critiques have been helpful and you made changes that strengthened the piece, so i will take it easy (on myself) and just say cool work.
i love your minotaur! i have had to concept a minotaur for the dungeons and dragons mmp and i must say i like yours way better! thanks for the kick in the butt.

Mitch,
Great minotaur! If you'll allow me another compositional nitpick, the action of the body might be even stronger if his rear leg were extended back more.

July 7th, 2003, 12:57 PM
Hey thanks,
Jon I'd love to see the Minotaur you drew. kicked your butt?? ha ha, I doubt it, but thanks.
Elwell: in my sketches setting the Minotaur up I did have the leg way back but it looked really weird due to the strange anatomy of the human/animal ankle area. I did it this way to avoid that. but thanks, good point.
I have been adding color to the Chimera and I started a thread in the Work in Progress forum, if you want to check it out.
