This was my painter 7 beginnings, actually a series of three interiors for wotc. I also used PhotoShop for initial color and comfort.
I took photo reference of myself (no, I am not that buff nor that mean looking). It was a good springboard for me to tweak and make the anatomy I wanted with correct lighting.
Andrew, I just went to look at your first one hundred portraits again. They got even better. So much fun, imagination and talent. I went to get my wife and show her, and of course she was duely impressed. I will always look at that collection of portraits and be amazed and inspired!

thanks Jon-
Great piece, Love the color changes in the arm on the right, and how well it works with the colors in the face,
I have to piont out that the arm and specificaly the wrist on the left side is sending off red flags in my perception, the wrist and forarm look as is there are no bones supporting it. and it takes away from the pose. other than that great work, you dont need photo ref for an arm you got two of them right in front of you.
great stuff as always, makes my day.

Damn, I was hoping for a chocolate-chip muffin. I'm so hungry. Either that, or that other kind of muffin.. if ya know what I'm sayin'.. *wink* *nudge*
Anyway, I agree with Andrew, but I'm getting some discomfort with the transition between the elbow and the forearm.
Other than that, this is flawless (imho). I LOVE how adventurous you are with your palettes, even with the usually restricted palettes for flesh tones.

Ya I just got back from Barnes and Noble. Picked up a copy of Spectrum which is just littered with your paintings. I am in awe.
I like that back arm! It is flawed and rubbery looking, but it adds dynanism. Its makes you see that this is a painting. That it is raw and coming directly from the hand of the artist. That maybe he had to take a leak and couldnt finish that section. Or, gasp! just didnt care!
I get slammed all the time because my proportions are off or that my elbows dont bend the right way. I like flaws sometimes. It adds that "created by human" element.
Disclaimer---I am in no way comparing myself to Jon--
I do think it would be cool if that axe had a little more weight to it.
Thanks for the continued inspiration.

Here are the details. I have to admit that these are not that exciting close up, but this is the kind of thing I like to see as well from others so?here they are.
Hedlamb, I just used muffin as a term of endearment. Thought it just made contrasting sense to his general deposition.
Thanks to all for their comments and critiques. The comments on what was not quite right about the piece are spot on. Good eyes out there!
Daarken please let me see what you do for your assignment. I am incredible faltered that you chose the Mara piece to do. What out for the mistake I made on her far eye, she looks like she got punched. Fix that for me will ya.
Brokencow, for you I have embarrassed myself with the details!

as andrew said, in one of the previous posts, it feels like christmas when there's a new foster post. thanks for being a source of inspiration and a good role model! nothing better for a young artist than getting on a forum with so many, talented, experienced artists.
close up shots are really cherries on top. still amazed how loose things are... *hides back in the shadow and studies*

jon: unfortunately my teacher shot down my idea to do your mara painting. she said it did not show enough form, and there wasnt a definite light source :P poo on her. sorry about that, ill probably still do it just for myself.
