Hello Hello~
I am back with blue col-erase pencil!
Wait, I've never shown any of my blue drawings here in conceptart.huh

Well here are some of the stuff I do when I watch movies like
Lord of the Rings, and ..oh! How is that movie Eragon?

Hey man, i have to say that i like these but i would suggest putting everything in one thread. (it's the trend around here) :) That said, im definitely looking forward to more stuff from you. Your robot designs in the other thread are very cool.

Nice lines, Where did you get that blue color erase pencil? Keep up the good work too.

Cool character designs. And in response to the question about the Eragon movie....it was awful. DO NOT read the books before you see the movie. I do suggest reading them because theyre amazing but they absolutely ruined the story in the film version.

I realized that right after reading the first line of your comment.
That sounds like a very good idea. Let me post all the line drawings on this thread here:)

Thank you Spyplane! I'm pretty sure you can find them in your local art material stores. Look for an animation section and you will see!

Ahh like I expected. It really is hard to find a decent dragon movie thesedays. Thanx for sharing Nexus!

Oh thank YOU TheST! Col-erase_indigo blue, my friend. They are soft but strong;)

Hey Joe, how are ya! I'm doing them on A4 printer papers so this is pretty much the same size as the originals:)

Hey Dave, I'm good thank you,

These new ones are really great, you say you don't have any work? How can that be, you have such a great style, and such imaginative characters. Some of your illustrations look like they would be great for Magic the gathering card game, and these character designs definatly look like something you would see sculptors turning into miniatures for miniature games.
Really amazing new bunch of work, once again I'll look foward to seeing some more.

Joe.

Always encouraging Mr Joe, I thank you again for your kindness!
Oh I am working as a commercial illustrator, freelancing at the moment,
and making decent amount of money from it. But I'm crossing my fingers and thinking that this must be the preview of the good things that are yet to come.
I just started knocking on doors of fantasy related publishers recently, but
nothing solid at the moment.

The good news? I'm moving down to LA this summer!!
Its damn hard to get into anywhere from here in Toronto. Itz about time-!

Oh, wow. I really love these works. the style, the clean-ness of it, the detail. Fantastic work~!

I also really like the cleanliness of your lines! The line is more graphic than 'felt' but it's a style that I've always enjoyed.

You're in Toronto? And there isn't enough work? That's surprising! I would have thought that the internet would have solved that issue.

I'm close to Toronto...I was just there last year @ Max the Mutt animation school but am considering going to either Sheridan or OCAD for illustration/design.

What do you mean by Leonardo series? I'm doing a leo series from a book I got at the Laurier University but they are all portraits (showing me the style of parallel line hatching).

Hello Mack. Thank you for your kind words!

I guess I should admit that I haven't tried my best breaking into the industry. I've been lucky so far with commercial illustration works but I can't think of one interview that I did for game or film companies. Shame on me-!
My terrible excuse is that i think I'm not good enough to break in thus I don't try until I'm ready.
I really think I should try now before itz too late.

I went to OCAD, it is a very good school and I would like to recommend-!
Sheridan however is safer when it comes to practical connection to the industry.
OCAD is full of talented profs and students who don't necessarily care about you. You have to force yourself to get things from them-! Sherdan? They push you beyond your limit and expect things to be done in their way.
Your choice-!

Sorry for the confusion, the only reason why I call it a leonardo series is because they are done in brownish/aged looking backgrounds, plus they are studies of characters
rather than finalized concepts of things.
Parallel line hatching should've made more sense you are right-!:)

Excellent work! Very varied all throughout and great prsentation

OCAD sounds like the better bet...I've been motivating myself to draw on my own as much as I can lately...trying to be a self-startiung learner or whatever the term might be. I also like the idea of being downtown (beside an art museum!) and close to the pulse of the city. I miss Queen St. West and the shows @ the Drake Hotel!

haha I'm the same way! I have yet to apply to a videogame studio or even a film studio because I always feel like I'm not there yet. Hah, I guess we never will be "there yet".

Love the latest batch..especially that top left one. That technique is something I've been forced away from by art teacher after art teacher. The landing pad seems like it's skewing alittle to the down/right.

Thanx Xavi! I just went back to see your piece again.
Second time feels even better. Keep em' coming-!!

Ian, it sounds like you know your Queen St.well! Where do you live exactly?
I'm glad your choice is OCAD and that you have the similar view point as I have.
I always thought being an artist is about identifying yourself with your own taste. Go artist go-!

About the landing pad? I can't believe I didn't notice that before until you told me!!
You are absolutely right-! I should get that fixed soon ahhh!!

After two years of focusing on doing gouache paintings, i'm finally back to line drawings.
And it feels sinfully good-!

Wow dave so awesome, your pencil work is amazing, you are using all col-erase? I tried those but I found the dont really erase too well, and I had to keep sharpening the pencil every 5 minutes it got dull so quickly. How do you keep your paper so white, or is it just the way it scans into your computer?

davekang
February 2nd, 2007, 05:45 PM
Hey Joe. They are indeed all col-erase. It is most true that they don't erase well however they don't smudge also. Originals are fairly clean but sure I did some quick clean up with photoshop:)
Oh I feel you when you speak of the curse of 5 minuites with these pencils. It's little frustrating but I try to think of it as meditating with a chinese brush. Thanx-!

Mr-Joe
February 3rd, 2007, 04:40 PM
Hey Dave, thats a good way to look at it, like Chinese brush, Gotta be patient!

Wow! amazing watercolors, Do you start them from scratch with just watercolor, or do you have some kind of foundation with pencils or colored pencils or inks?

Also do you know if you can use watercolor right over col-erase, or will it do something bad?

So much talent Dave, I can't understand how your not swamped with work, hey do you have a web site?

I'll be waiting for your next batch of goodies.

Until then, take care, Joe.

I see some inspiration from fruits and fresh fruits in here. Interesting take on a pretty crazy book.

davekang
February 4th, 2007, 09:57 PM
Hey Joe! I try to keep them clean by using less sketch lines before I start but
I sure do some rough forms and shapes before I start on watercolour.
The trick here is that I scan the first version of painting, do a very light digitial clean ups, and then print it on a double thick paper for the final touches using gouache and coloured pencils.
I don't know if col-erase is going to cooperate with watercolour, let me know how it goes if you do try it!
And I do have a website, Joe, and as a matter of fact, itz been providing me
decent amount of magazine/book related illustration works.
However, I'm not ready to share with anybody here in conceptart.
I'm working on a new website right now, I'll let you know when that happens!
Thanx a bunch!!

Thank you, Haxxxor!
Being a computer silly, I don't know how this stars-thingy works but
it sounds good to me! Thanx-!!!

Tetsuo, you confused me up there for sec!
I didn't realize what fruits and fresh fruits meant, but of course it is the name of a book that is on my table at this moment!
Pictures are so outragiously capturing that I even forget its title ha!
Thank you, I'm glad that you could see my intension-!

Thank you for your kind clearification on that star system, Haxxxor!
You are the definition of a 'good man' for doing so!! Thanx:)

an amazing variety of work, and all very accomplished. you are extremely versatile, Mr. Kang! however, after being greatly saddened by the "cancer" image (because it is so effectively done), i was really glad to see all those warmly smiling portraits! top notch work.

davekang
February 10th, 2007, 07:38 AM
Thank you, Masque.
I don't know if you heard of an illustrator called Paul Dallas, apprently one of the top illustrators in the commercial illustration fields at the moment, I was in his class back in OCAD last year and that 'cancer' piece is the one that he was really pleased about.
You see, commercial illustrators don't have much passion for monsters and anime chicks.

Hey dave,

First off thanks a bunch for looking through my work in my sketchbook and leaving a comment, I appreciate that alot.

And next, Dang man! you don't fail to impress, I had to scroll through the whole thread to get to the new stuff and I just thought to myself, oh man, there is SO MUCH work in this thread.

Thanks for sharing info on your work process, I thought about trying to scan work in and clean it digitally then print it back out to paint on with watercolors, because my line work is no good, I'm still a very messy sketcher. but a few things got in my way, First I don't have a nice large printer, but that can be fixed, Ive been looking around for a good one that prints big stuff, and the other thing thats stopping me from actually buying a printer, Doesn't watercolor make the printer ink run?

Really nice concepts in your updates, Where do you think of this crazy stuff?

Take care Dave, keep posting this good work.

Joe.

No problem, Joe. It was my pleasure really.
I'm glad that I helped you considering other possibilities of techniques using computer. I do own a tablet, it just that I trust my pencils and brushes more.
Printer ink does bleed on watercolours but that is the whole idea!
I do not like it when a painting is too polished. I like it when it shows progress even on the final. Thanx a bunch-!!

Masque, thank you once again for your cheerful acknowledgment!
What can I say, I love and respect old masters more than anything:)

Last but not least, Geronimo, thank you for your simple but meaningful words!
