Working from live model, Michael Newberry will demonstrate and instruct students on how to make simple step by step studies in pencil, charcoal, and pastel–that will cover essential studies needed to construct a major work.. Starting with thumbnail sketches he and the students will analyze composition and meaning. Then they will go on to create atmosphere and light studies--with a focus on the theme of the pose. Then they will go on to proportion, contour, details, and shadows. Lastly, working with pastel, the focus will be on the color shifts between warm and cool hues.
