View Full Version : Interesting and Varied Female Characters

Seedling
January 23rd, 2007, 10:29 AM
Around this forum, it is easy to find characters who are old, creepy, sinister, proud, uplifting, spiritual, cocky, dangerous, meek, lofty, sly, happy, sad, moody, brooding, pondering, introverted, outgoing, loud, quiet, young, disheveled, well-groomed – but by and large, most of these characters are male. Overwhelmingly, the first word that can be used to describe a female character presented at ConceptArt.org is “sexy”.

This thread is dedicated to female characters whose primary characteristic is something other than “sexy”. Show us your interesting and varied women! Show your old art, new art, refined pieces, and sketches.

I’ll kick this off by sharing some of my quick paintings. But I know you all can do better. Let’s see what you’ve got!

This thread has been brought to you by the women of ConceptArt.org.

I think this is cool and I will look through my stuff to see what I can find. I'm working with a handicap though. Women with the following characteristics are generally sexy to me: sinister, proud, uplifting, spiritual, cocky, dangerous, meek, lofty, sly, happy, sad, brooding, pondering, introverted, outgoing, quiet, young, disheveled, and well-groomed (Sorry, testosterone is in me).

Moody women are sexy to me part time, and annoying part time.

Old women have been known to cause me to feel admiration and profound regret that I didn't know them back in their day.

That leaves me with creepy and loud out of the categories listed above, and depending on the nature of creepy, maybe that one's out too. I always greatly envied Gomez Addams. I wanted to be in that family rather than my own. (Tish, you spoke French!)

Henrietta was not primarily sexy.

Good. I was hoping that might be the case. Many times the thing that moves me is something I can see more on the inside than on the outside. I think that speaks more to the person they are, rather than being some form of objectification.

My repost from the girlie forum ...

I don't know how "varied" these would be considered, but I figure it doesn't hurt to post. :tihi:

The first three are studies from my trip to the InSOMAnia workshop. They were great models btw. ;)

A sketch based off of a photo... I don't think I'm finished with it, but I'm involved w/ a few other projects, so it may go unfinished for a bit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b104/gyspy7/womansketchweb.jpg

.... and a little something I did to resolve some stress in regards to an asshole man. heh. (yes, these are likenesses of both myself and the *ahem* asshole) This is also my first attempt at rendering in markers, so any c&c would be welcome :)

I'd also like to see variations on bodytypes (aka, unusual chicks that could also be considered sexy by some.)

(Sorry, testosterone is in me)

A female character who is primarily of some particular trait, and secondarily hawt stuff to you, would be pretty spiffy here, I think. :^^:

I took some ballpoint sketch notes at the game tonight of a woman who is possibly a more rabid hockey fan than I am, which is saying quite a bit. She's loud there, I admit, but so am I. I wear foam earplugs so I am not bothered by my usual noise issues. I see her a lot so I can remember her, and may be able to convert the notes into a presentable charcoal drawing. She's quite hot, but with a rather sharp edge on her. (We won on a shootout by the way).:nintendo:

Seedling: Awesome idea. This isn't just a tendency of CA but just about everywhere. I'm sick to death of how jaded the "sexy" chicks can be.

Here's one from a year ago to add. Doesn't show much personality, now that I look at it. You can be sure I'll draw up more. :D This time I'll do better. :)

btw, Steph, your picture made me laugh so hard. When I get old, I want to be just like that picture. :D

While working on character designs for the graphic novel I'm working on, I intentionally avoided the "Supermodel Heroine." Instead I tried for a face that was attractive, but at the foremost expressive so the reader can hopefully really get into the character. We'll see how that works out.;)

Gabba Gabba Hey! Gabba Gabba Hey!

This stuff was produced tonight in modified coutour exercises where I was not supposed to look at the paper much. I got to draw a mom whose teenage daughter is taking the class. Because the mom does not draw, I got to draw her a second time when everybody was supposed to switch.

All you other beautiful women out there, I can make you look really weird too. PM me for my rates.

Not necessarily. I would say there are many many many possible ways to solve this challenge. Just look at what has already been posted here. Oh, and nice image!

SO Seedling found my thread in the critiques section and told me to check out this thread... some great work here, its always interesting to put a little spin on the stereotypical "pretty woman"
Mine needs a fair amount of work (especially the tail and background) but i think she fits fairly well with this group!

oh and Chuck, Mate.... that think is freakin awesome. cracked me up as i slowly scrolled down the page!

Masque- Thanks for the feedback. The pastel portraits are part of a series I've done at a local youthclub. I go there every week and help out and draw the kids. These were some of the first i did and some of the best. It has become very hard to avoid becomming stale. Your Niad is nice, I should practice more. There used to be an old rule amongst the English pastoral painters :- Brown , Green, Blue. meaning put brown in the foreground. It would have aided the Naiad piece.

Corric- There's some beautifull drawing going on there. I love the frenetic line work in the first piece and looking at my own contribution i will forgive any hypocracy.

This piece was done for an Australian fantasy author - Its certainly the most unique female that I've had to paint!

http://sanjana.nilut.com/cgnz/af.jpg

She is terribly thin, dangerously bordering on death due to a score of years of malnourishment, but she has learnt to live with few meals and has survived on fresh flesh and carrion for her entire life.

She wears a suit of plate-mail made entirely of Dragon scales which, although kept in good condition, is permanently soiled by blood and dirt. Her silver tabard with a blood red crescent moon emblazoned on the chest is kept in a similar condition. The armor hugs her slim form tightly, revealing sickening curves that tell of a body abused and starved.

EDIT - Yar, it seems that my server is having some down time.....for the first time in forever. The image will show up in a few hours :(
