I'd like to see one of these for every state, I know it's hard for anyone especially us *cough* generally more eccentric artist types to figure this sort of thing out on their own, so let's make this easy for our community.

Then, then as we become amazing artists we can fight state to state for dominance and eventually take over the world.

I will certainly back you up on the BYU thing, though I may be biased since that's where I went. :)

Seriously though, BYU had four students get into the Society of Illustrators Student Competition last year. One won $2,000 and another got $1,000, so I think it's a pretty good place. :)

It looks they have been having sculpture classes most recently, but have also done figure drawing and painting.

Utah teens (grades 7-12) are invited to produce videos, poster art, poetry and songs to help prevent dating violence. Contest deadline: Jan 31.

The Springville Museum of Art holds an annual "Senior Portfolio Review" (http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635176982,00.html) for high school students.
Representatives from local universities are there and it is "an opportunity for students to receive thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid from the participating schools."

Um what school do you recomend going to around here. I'm looking at the U of U but not sure. I want a degree in Illustration and Filmstudies with emphasis on animation.

If you're looking in-state; not to mention you said you were looking for Illustration and Animation - go to BYU.

Now, scholarships - you never know until you try. What is the worst that can happen? You don't get it? That's not even a consequence it's so easy :) So, which one are you going to try first?

The animation program at BYU is VERY GOOD.

"The animation program will add two more 'student Emmy' awards from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation to their collection. BYU films have won five of 18 animation student Emmys since 2004, along with other awards at film festivals worldwide."

Graduates from the program get very good jobs in the industry. I have several friends who have done well and are working for studios out in California. Pixar is stopping by there this month to look for interns.

Idiot Apathy (Tom) and I are researching scholarships for this thread. You can help us and hopefully find some scholarships that would be good for you as well. :)

Okay thanks so much you guys for telling me about the animation program at BYU. You guys got me convinced and determined: I'm going to BYU darnit.
My plan is the same as before only slightly different. I want to do a double major in Illustration and animation. Seeing as BYU actually as a dedicated animation program.

I only have a couple of concerns: Not being mormon, what should I be aware of in terms of applying, planning to apply there, and taking courses there? What are the rules you mentioned in my other post?

Also, what should I be doing to prepare for applying there? What kind stuff should I put into my portfolio? I'm sorry but their site information doesn't have anything on requirements for illustration portfollios. I e-mailed the secretary but I wanted your advice too.

Hey Wake :)

I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Like most universities, BYU will want you to take some General Education classes, such as writing, science etc. They will also want you to take a certain amount of religion classes. I think some of the religion classes are different for non-Mormons than they are for Mormons, though.
Now, you have to fulfill these requirements if you want to graduate with a degree, but if you don't care about that you could probably get away with taking what you wanted.

BYU has this thing called the Honor Code (http://honorcode.byu.edu/The_Honor_Code_and_Applications.htm), which is a list of rules all students must live by. I think most universities have something similar which says "I promise to be honest in my schoolwork and not cheat or plagiarize, etc." BYU has some extra requirements such as no drinking, smoking, or drugs, no pre-marital sex, etc. You would have to live by these rules as a student.

If I were you, I would try to get good grades (BYU can be hard to get in to), I would concentrate on figure drawing, and I would go to the Portfolio Day held at the Springville Art Museum (see post #9 in this thread). If you are worried about your grades, this is a good thing to do because you can be admitted automatically if you are offered a scholarship.

Regarding what to study, I would major in Animation and take as many Illustration classes as you can. Doing both is a heavy load and the school might want you to focus on one or the other. But I know quite a few Animation students do something similar and sign up for Illustration classes.

I don't go around to high schools, I'm currently studying art with William Whitaker and trying to get into the gallery scene.
