Hi.
I’ve decided to create myself a sketchbook here on Consept-art. I’m 17 years old, and live in norway. I’m currently attending my second year at a norvegian highschool specialising in art and design, but i feel that I’m not progressing fast enough. So I’ve decided to take matters in my own hand and start to do some studing on my own. I plan to present all my work here. All coments and critiques are greatly apreciated.

I’m currently working my way through the book ”Sucsessful drawing” by Andrew Loomis. I’m just saying myself finished with the elipses. I found them quite hard to get right, but on my last attempt I improved alot

I plan to copy all Loomis drawings in the book to learn some anatomy and how he thinks when he shades his figures.

Two oil-paintings I’m working on. They are still in the early phases of developement, and I plan to post my progress on them here as time goes by. Now I’m just waiting for the paint to dry, which incidentally took a lot more time than I expected.

Doing a painting of my brother. Unfortunately my initial sketch had severe issues which forced has forced me to redo alot of the picture. I also notice that the thick layer of paint I have put on his face trying to fix this takes ages to dry. At first I started a WIP thread in the critique board, but I’ve decided to just continue on updates here instead. First time drawing with dry pastels. I'm not realy comfortable with the medium. I prefere paints more, as I think pastels are cumbersome and hard to manipulate. This were also a school assignment in the colortheory classes, a study of complementary colors.

Some quick sketches made of my classmates. We've started doing these the first 10 minutes of every drawing class. It was my Idea, and I hope the teacher will sustain this habbit for the rest of the year. I've done a few more, but they are to big to get home in a practicaly manner.

It's cool to see you do studies. I lack that endurance myself, unfortunately.

As you said yourself, you need to work on contrast (like me). And also be sure to get some really messy sketches in there between all those studies. That will help you develop a more confident line, and make you more at ease with the pencil. Other than that, life drawing always helps.

Hi! You surely are not planning to copy the entire loomis book at once? I mean, awesome that you're so committed to learning, but how are you going to keep up motivated if you don't draw for yourself? I think its easier to pick out an area where you feel you can work on, and try to work on that. At least thats my approach because mostly, there's no time to study everything ;)

The ellipses are damn hard, but, if you figure out the rules that are applied to each ellipse and you understand them, smoothly drwaing an ellipse will follow by practise. You don't have to keep constructing them ;) By just drawing and good watching you'll develop a feel for them...

Ah, I dont mean to discourage you or anything in studying loomis, just make sure your intention to study everything isn't blocking you ;)

Mainly because of your way of drawing. It really adds something.

And what the other two said, jou have to watch your values at times. your paintings have a bit of the same quality those ^ drawings have too. You might want to watch the shape op the eyes in your portrait. Other than that, you are well on your way!

I am curious what more you'll come up with. Keep us posted!

Yay, I agree that i can not spend more time constructing elipses, it's to boring. They'll just have to come with time as you said :). Havent been doing much from the Loomis book lately. I found a competition on another forum which i frequent, and i spent all my time trying to get my painting done in time. I failed :D.

As of now I dont think that going through the Loomis book will be a trouble, much of it is new and intriguing. I do see your point, but as I've got no rush or deadline and plenty of other projects to mix it up with I think It'll go fine.

As of messy sketches I guess I could find some of those, though none worth showing springs to mind.

I really really like your paintings man, and it looks like tome that your blocks on that fishy paiting worked well with your next coat. And your brother's pic is coming along famously as well. As the year goes by and i get to learn some more about painting i will give you what help and hints i can, but they will be very sparse for a while to come.

The elipses might not be so dull if you could find a cool scene to drw that included them. then you could put into practice what you just picked up!

This is schoolwork, and has to be delivered tommorow. Pleased with how the man/woman :P turned out. The trees in the background clearly needs more work. If I ever can be bothered I'll fix it later.

Hi there Hai. I've been a lazy bugger havent I?. Not updateing my own sketchbook, nor looking over yours and the other people in this SSG. Thanks for takeing an interesst, its apreciated. I'll be sure to look over peoples sketchbooks now, and leave some comments when I see fit.

Those paintings are looking mighty fine. Even with the long break in updates you are putting me to shame. I haven't even broken the sealing of my oil paints yet! But your work (especially the top one), is very inspiring.

As for the drawing, it would really help seeing the reference. (it is referenced, right?) But I think you made the left cheek (our left) a bit big. The eyes are shaped differently and the nose looks like it might be a little too small.

Looking forward to the next installment already. :)

loving the cat statue painting!
try not to rely on pictures for ref too much, train more to see "real life" objects as 2d planes and paint those - there's a noticable shift in rendering quality when looking at your still life pictures (the cat being an exception to the rule here, i guess)
