shoulden't children's books be soft and happy? with smooth lines / watercolors?

this is the dark and scary part of the book, its about balloons and this is the thorny forest area, so very dangerous. they dont HAVE to be happy looking :teeth:

I'd say work more on the sketch and linework before you move on to the color. Your first post has a piece of the drawing which is still visible in sketch form, and far surpasses, at this point, any of the coloration you've applied.
I'd be interested in seeing the rest of it sketched out, maybe even shaded, before going to color. The marker rendering looks rushed, sloppy. Your sketch is clean, flows nicely, for what you can see of it, and is interesting.

the background remind me on the game "LocoRoco"... hehe
PS: the dead trees dont look good with a "happy background". and remember: everything what is in the background become a weak color(and get more blue). i hope you undersand what i mean. i have only a "E" in english.
EDIT:you can put some outlined trees for the background, for exemple
