Shawn! Hey I have been an admirer of your work for some time now! Very glad to see you here and have a chance to correspond with you.
Suggestions on this piece...leave it alone it is perfect. Little creepy, very imaginative and exceptionally well done!

wow!-
thanks jon.
the feeling is mutual-
i have been struggling a lot with the content of much of the freelance work that i do. i am at the point now where i can get into the process of painting- regardless of subject matter-
i am slowly changing what i show in my commercial portfolio to reflect my interests- hopefully the phone will keep ringing...
my personal work is starting to filter into my commercial works, as well-
and that is exciting for me.
anyways-
you're work is very inspiring and your contributions so far to this forum have been outstanding. thank you.

wow, two of my favorite artists and inspirations in one thread...like foster I would also say to leave it pretty much as it is, it brings across a very unique creepy feeling and is an awesome piece of work. I don't know if this is relevant or not but is the bluish highlight on the lower right side of his face a little to strong maybe? Anyways it wouldn't really affect the piece anyway so awesome job!! :) *argg.....gotta get off my butt and do my art school projects...

thanks don-
i had added an ochre reflected light on the right side of his face- but not sure if that is/was necessary or confusing- especially because you don't really see it anywhere else on the body- but your suggestion has got me looking there- i might omit the ochre light and just darken that area slightly....
where are you going to school?
who do you have for instructors up there?
have fun with your projects...

I'm in my first year of illustration up at sheridan college and some of my instructors are Wendy Boyd for Design class, Jack Taylor for Object Drawing, Clemente Botelho for Conceptual Processes, Bruce Sherman for Painting Class, Rhonda Ridgway for Computers, John Parker for Life Drawing, Lawrence Read for Drawing Systems and Mike Walsh for Communications, I think I spelled those right and wrote the right names, maybe not. :P Anyways thanks for asking and I look forward to your future work, thanks for the inspiration. I feel kinda silly in the program because I got in right out of grade 12 and almost all the rest had to go to 1 or more other programs to get in, most people had to go to art fundamentals at sheridan first so i'm the kid of the bunch, there is a bar at my school but i'm not even old enough to drink there so I sit outside and knock back a can of pop :(

you're welcome-
i've heard some great things about sheridan, especially their animation department.
i've been teaching at ringling for 3 years- but i'm making the move to nyc next summer. hopefully there will be openings at some of the art schools up there- i definitely want to continue teaching.

thanks andrew-
i've been really thinking about my work lately- and the art that i enjoy looking at-
and also the music that i lsten to- and how to reflect those interests more so in my work... i'm excited to see where it takes me...
i've been following your self portrait's- your intent and focus is humbling.
not that i'm a slacker by any means, but i could definitely make more art...
it's like being in school again.

Wow! this is a great idea, and beautifully executed.
i cruized your web page and was so jollied by the contents that i had to email the link to my father, who is also a professional illustrator. he seemed very impressed and inspired.. we both made the assumption the asian woman is your wife,, girlfriend.?. were we correct? the one with her under the white sheets is my fave.

Something about those fresh brushstrokes on the left are -just- right!
Nice colors too. If you wanted creepy you definitely captured it.

Shawn barber!
You teach at ringling don't you?
I was at the CORE thing you did a few weeks ago. The chick working on the computer was pissing me off cause i didn't get to see enough of your works. I wish i could of stayed but i had a job interview at 2:00 so i had to leave...wonder if you saw me? Anywho, i love your works and the peice above is great...like the others have said the orange hightlight is kinda weird...but i almost didn't see it so it's just fine. Anywho, nice to see you posting here!

yes,brokencow/randall
i teach at ringling-
the core alumni seminar was a good thing, seemed a little short though-
hope that you're enjoying your time at ringling.
lono-
got the pm, i think that i've seen your father's work before,
your drawings are really nice; clean and to the point-
i would consider placing some of your figures/characters in a space...
good stuff.
elwood-
it's the same composition-
digital representation never does the original justice...
i think that i'm starting to irritate the slacker students in our class...

Hi Shawn!
The piece really does look different after scan, seems to have muted the colors a little, but depending on the monitor as to how much. Extremely creepy...the eyes...
This is Lynn in your class by the way, I shall post something for crit up here when I have something worth posting, but scanning everyone else's stuff has helped a lot.

yah,, hes a comercial artist so youve probably seen his stuff on sports products or advertisements or even food packaging.. he does it all. he did the three potato chips on the front of the ruffles bag. :)
all of my stuff is concept character work so i usually keep it simple. im almost always on a deadline too. but your right,, as far as the drawings serving as art, they could deffinately benifit from being placed in an environment or even being grounded to the paper by a shadow or something.
thanks for the feedback man. i appreciate it.
i look forward to seeing more of your work on this forum!

hey lynn-
the color will never transfer the way the original is-
or at least i'm not too obsessed with retaining the exact replication-in terms of color...
post some work....
lono, you're welcome-
i've been visiting the boards for a while- but haven't posted much-
that will change...
thanks, davi- yep, i remember you and internalzine-
i went to school with andrew, jason, james z., and puddnhead...
so when i get the time- i always try and look at what's going on over here-
lots of inpirational stuff
