saikin: thanks, i glad i can help at least a litlle. the strips where made a 2 years and a half for a backside of a wheekly post here in montevideo, and i share the space with other people(www.elipsiscomic.com)
i been drawing since i was a litlle boy, and continue the journey...

Nice women, , really beautiful stuff, but I think comic work is not at par with the rest of teh stuff. also try usinig coliring mroe to define forms more strongly. cool inks.

DIMAGYAN
January 17th, 2007, 02:35 PM
well thanks both for your comments.

mr.rigth: the smking cat was made a long time ago(2004) but supose i can make it...drawing that character was really fun and print a non sense feel to the strip...

bhanu:i apreciated you like the femmales characthers, for the comic, i have to say that before other people say the same thing as you, and in some cases i have to agree, but i treat any piece diferently, for me once thing are illustration and another is comic. in comic i like to keep the things simple and quick read aspect, and color more for interaction between the tones then the forms, i like more european, japanese, and argentine way to do comics then the us mainstreem...but is a question of taste, any way i don't feel that my comics are in the same plane as the other things(is not like the other are great) so in general therms i agree with you...

Great range of work here! ou've got a really 'old school' look to the way you draw, like something out of the 50's. That's not a crit though, i really like it..your comics are good also, but i wish i knew what that cat with the pipe was saying :)

Great people studies, particualrly the girls. I'd like to see a few more dynamic poses and perhaps some stronger use of colour, but this is a great start.

I'll be keeping an eye on you!

mull77: thanks, in other times some people say something like you, i suposed that i'm old fashioned :rendered:.... i have to say that i like a lot the work of the next people: alberto breccia, hugo pratt, solano lopez,(comic artist who has work in argentina and europe)....this is for the old reference, but also i like some atual creators ... btw the cat says something like this:" the roads have no ending....the causalitie rule our lives"

diego: thanks, i'm glad that you like the character pages, they was for a comic but i supose that i'm a litlle lazzy...

explosivelimes: yes i rememder the time when nothings matter other then draw and play...i used to draw comics a lot too was i child, now...well, not enough... i think the primal goal of any activitie is the ludic factor, if you enjoy and have fun what you do,you probably be a healthy and focus person, and the work is doing with a smile in the face(not always:rendered: )...thanks for the inking comment...

afklamer: thanks,i like inking but always is a litlle hard and frustrating...yes, i wish to translate the comics but i'm not good in english...

well, for the update not a prolific work nigth but here are some sketches:

You've got the beginnings of lots of good stuff here. I particular enjoy the more simple graphic design looking things:

Also liked the Sandman-esque comic pages. Lots of potential for stylistic development I think.

DIMAGYAN

stark: thanks for that words...

armando: thanks for your words, what do you mean with sandman-esque?,you refer to the style of sandman comic?, in that case, wich one of my comics?...i supose you refer to the b and w character with color backgrounds?... glad you like the inking girl...

more sketches/studies, its been a while since i do studies, in general in this moment of my life is kind of boring, but well, some times is good to warm up the hand and the brain...so i try to do more often...

ermac: thanks, glad you like my inking...
chirp chirp: thanks, i appreciate your words...
jeri:is funny did you say that, because i don't read us comics,i see some of the cho work from a a friend a couple a months ago, a strip that have animals( i don't know its name), but no i haven't influence from cho, the woman was done in 2004 and inked in 2006, but i don't know his work back then...i think that the resamblance is maybe for the style of do b and w, mister cho in ocations do his work in a traditional way(i say he like frazzeta, but is only a suposition),and for me i like more old inkings than actual...my influences are more from river plate and europe comics(alberto breccia, hugo pratt, solano lopez....), i don't know i guess i have to be glad for your comment(depende how you thinks of mister cho)...

well nothing to post....(i have to draw)

ermac:gracias, me alegra que te guste mi entintado...
chirp chirp:gracias, aprecio tus palabras...

These reminded me of the Sandman comic, I mean the experimental and expressionistic coloring. I must admit I haven't seen too much of that comic, so I suppose my statement might not carry too much currency.

armando: thanks for answer my questions, the comic with the cat was what im refer to b and w...me too, i don't see much of that comic, only a couple of pages from d mckean i guess, but i know what you say...
currency i like say value, valor o importancia? if meanin that, i think all of what you say and other have importance...
i'm sorry if i did the impression that i don't care, my english are not good so i try to simplify the sentences....thanks again, i like esperiment with comic and drawing in general...

Hi. I'll try out my Spanish of that's OK. I need the practice.

I quite like your sketchbook, and I'm jealous of your linework and variety of styles. I've just begun learning to ink, and I'd appreciate any advice you could give. I got an Aito brush-pen about a month ago, and I'm practicing a lot with it. Still, I'm new.

In your work, I'd like to see a bigger variety of body types. For example, a slightly heavier woman who are still sexy. Or an old and decrepit crime boss.

Keep up the good work!

Its been a while. Sorry if I havent been given any crits on your works, just your work is great and to me its hard to see those problem ares for you. But Ill be trying harder to give some good crits dude. Lovin the latest work, but on your animals, try to use smaller masses to create the body, like circles and ovals, and for the trunk of a human, its good to use a bean shaped mass. Its pretty cool to try these things out, you get a feel for them and you can try something new and exciting to see if gives you the results you really want and like. I started a new Sketchbook. Its in my sig if you want to come by and check out. Any crits, comments or anything you igve to help me out would be greatly appreciated.

--

I like your recent sketches, especially this one. The hair is good, and also the eyes, which appear wet. In the hair, do you use white ink after drawing it in black, or only the black ink?

Thanks for your comments in my sb. Sometimes I use a pen with nibs for details, and often a brush for outlines and thick lines. I'm learning to use it for textures and effects also.

well is been a long time since i made the last post...sorry for the late reply

bhanu: thanks for your comments, i will try to do more finished stuff...

envisor:thanks, any comment all of you made in this thread is good and useful
i like crits, but any type of comment too, i like "see" people reaction at my work, and in this community is more diverse and international, so i can see how something i do is viewing by someone from another culture, see what is understandable and common field, what is particular, etc(is not an antropological experiment:^^: ), anyway i want to hear every comments...
construction is a good thing, sometimes i have an impulse and only draw, but i will keep in mind...

scottmcd:thanks for your comments and your spanish talk...
for inking hair i use both white and black ink, but i like more direct approach so i try always to do white parts as negative spaces when i inking...its all depends on the result you seek...for nibs i mean the extreme of the pen holder, in spanish is portapluma(pen holder) and pluma(pen nib)...
brush is a great instrument to ink, you can see a very wide range of thechnics in us golden age comics and others.if you are interested in comic inking this are great examples:hal foster, alex raymond, will eisner, etc, argentinian comics from the sixties to before have great examples of inking(alberto breccia, solano lopez, etc)is good hear you are practice with brush...

I need to catch my breath. I don't really and any crits on this HUGE PHUCKIN update, but I would like you to take a few things further and finish them. Mainly the rocker and the guy jumping. There are a lot of characters in here that would be quite good for comics, video games, etc. They have good lines, a good expression and sense of aire about them that could be taken further. A lot of the faces in here should probably be shaded in more to give them a little bif of difference to the rest of the images in here. Also, your inking is still amazing and I would like to see some more of that if possible some time soon.

Enough patting of your buttocks, KUDOS and keep at it. Also, check your PMs

time for sketches, first shaina from saint seiya, an old drawing with some color and a sort of "pin up/red ponnytail spider girl" that a friend ask me to draw( he drew a sketch with a start point costume and show me, then i did a few changes in the design and made the final character with two costume version)

I forgot to PM you on a few things, but you can check them now and you should have something. I like the entire update mucho. The girl crying is really great in the color choice and facial expression. I think that has to be my fave in this last update. About the spider-woman, I think you should mos def tone down the plasticity of the image. She looks like a fresh waxed doll. Her hair and skin shouldn't look so glossy. Unless she is wearing a clear latex costume, then it works, if not, then it's unneeded. The 80's look of the Spider-woman works a lot better just because of the non-issues of the ones posted right above.

KUDOS and see ya next update or so.

Stark:hey thanks for dropping by.glad you like the valkyrie pencil, in that case the ink was traditional and some things done digital later.i like pick colors and try diferent combinatios, and in general terms i like more pastel sheme.

Seaport:thanks. yes the arm armor it looks "non working" type, honestly i didn't see it in that moment, recently i check the process and concepts sketches i did and i see only in the first sketch a good funtionality in the armor but the final result is a nice but useless armor...thanks for that observation and make me revisiting my process, i have to pay more attention.

Seaport:hey thanks!.i start that drawing doing general black strokes, but then i realize the similarity(most for the "ear" thing and part of the head) but i don't have any intention with that drawing or his design, so i leave in the way it comes.
i say that no was intentional but maybe my subconciene set me a trap:nohope:

blaschke:thanks!

well post time

Stark:muchas gracias!

----

Hi again. I like the over-prepared backpacker, and I also find it amusing. It's the expression on his face that does it. I almost did this CHoW, but in the end I didn't have enough time. Maybe the next one.

More life drawings would be good, and I enjoyed seeing the exercises in form and composition for the comics as well. Later...

Looks like I missed 3 good posts. Hopefully it won't happen again man. Your work really reminds me of retro-styles. Like 80's and early 90's. I love the color palette you use in your work. Like Lefran said some time ago, I would also like to see more comic sketches in here. Also, can you post some Step-by-Step pieces as well? Your work looks simple and engaging, but I'm sure others would appreciate what steps you did in your colors.

First off, the face is prefect, so don't mess with that anymore please! Seconds, I'm a sucker for short haired girls so the first 2 are looking great. The only thing I see that is kind of bothering me is that you angled the breast a bit more than it looks like it should be. It looks like it wants to slide away from the rest of her body. That's really only thing I see. I really wish I could do 3/4th face views but they always come out looking the same for some reason which bothers the hell outta me.

Kudos and keep at it

Stark:haha, okay i will stop with the face. i like the short hair but i was experiment other style. i have to check better the body, what you point is valid.i see the sketch after read your comment and i guess i can change the breast to look more natural(that's what i want after all). draw faces in 3/4 is not an easy task, i have a lot o trouble with that. during a year or two i have an obsesion drawing heads and faces. the only thing that come to my mind as advice is draw them a lot(i have to do the same). thanks for stop by and mantein this thread alive!

Hello, nice to see you working on studies also. LMS3 is like a site wide challenge called Last Man Standing. There are a series of events and challenges and certain people are matched up or called out and we fight it out with art. I think you should really look into past LMS challenges and see if it is something you might want to take part in.

Now, as for the art itself, stop. You are beginning to do what Mins does and that is going to break my heart. I'm just kidding, keep rocking out 50 hand and feet studies bro, it's all you. The last update (the girl) looks like it's coming along really well. The face could use one more light study to range the values a bit more. But other than that, it looks really solid.

DIMAGYAN

Stark: hello.yeah is time to me to get more serious about drawing. i never did studies before(not in this amount, using references and even from life). i don't want to have limitations to create. also im terrible drawing from life or from photos:upset: .
ah so thats lms3. well i don't know the only thing i participate was in character of the week because its nature(creations of character) but an illustration competition...mmm, i don't feel too confident with my skills. further maybe

hahaha, ok i will stop. i want to do at least one complete a4 page per day of studies. in principle hands feets, heads and self portrait, but then others things.

yes i have to do more studies on the girl. thanks for the visist, i really apreciated!

Well hell, you seem to be doing fine by me. The last spider woman paintings and sketches look really amazing. I think you are finished with it. Not too much more you can do besides give her a background, but that will take away from the character, so leave that out.

It's awesome to see that you're so dedicated to the art. I wish I had that kind of work ethic to keep plugging away. But if I catch one whiff of something that just doesn't sit right, I either tear the paper out or start all over. I guess I should do more studies like yourself until I feel comfy with going further.

Thanks for stopping by the SB and I'll see ya around.

Stark:thanks!.yeah i agree with you about the background. mostly with i experiment is with colour, but i think im done with that drawing.im not sure with the sw with short hair. well actually i think im a little lazzy. as i said before im trying to do better.try to do little things every day(thats what im doing now) to get discipline but in a more natural way(i think).

dont destroy the drawings! work more until you are satisfied. you can always learn something from your drawings even the ones you don't like. besides, is like a record of your creative life and thoughts.

yes do studies. i will do mine for sure!
thanks for stop by! and the support

Wow. Great hands, feet, and head studies. You really did a good job on creating the lines and form. Keep that up man. Also, are you creating in PS or on Paper? I'd like to know b/c I don't see any sloppiness from you as I do others, including myself. So I was just wondering on what you created on and get more chaotic in your work. Check out Kresh's work for more ideas on what it looks like.

DIMAGYAN
October 3rd, 2007, 10:37 PM
Stark: thanks. by sloppiness you mean messy lines or loose lines? (english is still an enigma for me:teeth: ) anyway, i try always to avoid a mess in every drawing, i like expression in lines and mark but also i want to made clear lines.
and also i try to make more loose drawings(that's something i have to work)

i draw in both. but i draw more on paper, i like more the feel and the texture.also i use several diferent pencils (graphite, mechanical, lead holder, wood). i don't like the comfortable feel that bring use only one type of tool. i use any type of paper, from sketchbook to a4 copy paper(the problem that i have in here is the lack of paper, due to a zero demand in the market).

be more chaotic in the subject, or in the execution of a drawing?

i see the work you tell me, nice lines and designs.

as always thanks for your time and comments, really apreciated.

today's study: my hand

haha, yeah, english does suck. I struggle with it to from time to time. I mean messy lines. I don't think that a messy drawing is very awe-inspiring at all. So many people tell me to loosen up and let the pencil roam, but then I lose control of what I want to do and the drawing turns out worse than what I intended. But yes, you are doing a fine job, so it's really a suggestion of how others tell me to do things. Keep doing it your way b/c it is working. Also, chaotic in the creation of the design. When you're doing a fold or hair, just let the pencil go crazy. Swirls, spikes, long lines for no reason at all; those can attribute to some interesting pieces.

Siga dibujar!

Hi! Good work on the studies - they're very inspirational. I found a number of photos of eyes that are good for drawing studies. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104355

I like the name Diego because when I was taking my first Spanish course that was my name in class. There is no version of "Scott" in Spanish, so the teacher called me Diego.

I liked seeing both your pencils and your inks a few posts back. Thanks for your advice in my sketchbook - it's quite helpful. If I could ask, do you have any thoughts about this drawing: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=218024&stc=1&d=1192334580 I know that the leg is wrong. And I think I should use more blacks on the girl, but I'm not sure. I want the eyes to go to her and then to her house and the figure in the door. Anyway, thanks again. Keep drawing!

tensai: thanks! glad you notice the variety(is something im working on)

scottmcd: thanks! glad you find inspiration here. i see the eyes photos, nice.

haha what a coincidance!. well Diego also don't have an equivalent in english. in highschool we use to translate names in the texts like pedro--pete, carlos--charles. but not our names. sounds fun tho.

i will check your sb later to drop a comment about that drawing.

The first one seems liek a bunch of defunt buildings or soemthing. The second doesnt really do it for me, maybe if you could connect the two masses somehow.Umm the third has a lot power, potential.the sketches are nice , great to see you gettign loose with lines.

I enjoy this sketchbook immensely. So much skill and attention to commitment, you are what I aspire to be like. If only I could get some studying done and keep up with my art. Love the new batch, your abstractions are really good and I think you could take them further if you delved into some painting. Maybe acrylics? Anyway, the foot studies, the geisha, and the scarecrow are my tops in this batch.

Keep em coming and I'll keep watching and looking for things to critique

just keep drawing. study is only a need to be better in what you want to express and comunicate. as i see it, you always have to do what you like and do it with passion.

you are right about the abstractions. i need to paint. maybe some inks before to jump onto acrylics.

im glad you enjoy this sketchbook, i really apreciate your comments and

Great sketchbook... I'm amazed by the efforts you're giving to head and hand anatomy and you can bet it's working! Just a couple of nitpicks: On the shaded figures with exposed skin, I can't help missing some anatomical detail on the stomach area and legs for example, some Bridgeman or Hogarth books or just plain muscle charts might help for that. On the second newest female concept, looks a bit like she's falling backwards - I think to be walking forward, she should have more forward lean.

All in all, wonderful work and progress, your sketching is pure eye candy. :)

Rendering form can be likened to drawing contours, in fact they are the same thing. Follow the contour of a person's profile in one unbroken line, you start with the forehead, move down into the nose, over the mouth, each piece of that line is connected to the part before and after it. A vertical line connects to a diagonal, then to a horizontal and so on.
In value it's similar in that each value has to gradually blend into each other value as it turns the form, in this case a mid value may represent a vertical contour, a light value may represent the diagonal, a dark value will represent the horizontal. It's all the same, you're moving over contours just representing it differently.

Hey Dimagyan,

you can draw like a mad man but if you don't observe and asimilate the information then is no learning.
Gracias

---------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Dimagyan,
It's nice to see your recent updates. You show a good amount of knowledge regarding figures and faces with your dynamic and fun style. It's a style I would see on comics and newspapers, especially the last woman you draw. You know how to express the personality of your character in their faces. For now, I can't see anything to critique just a suggestion of doing more paintings. The last ones have a good progress but will be nice to see them finished.

Also, I want to thank you for what I quote above. They are very insightful words and help me open my eyes while I draw. Thanks

Appreciate the update!

DIMAGYAN
November 29th, 2007, 12:08 PM
Stark:thanks.hehe no, the darkly rendered head was my fault. form and volume is something i have to practice.
yes, i have to draw more types of heads and faces.
the first thing to come in mind (in order to draw different heads and features) is observe a lot. what you read in many books are rules, general and ideals rules.
ideals canon are good(specialy to learn) but sometimes you have to brake those rules. caricatures are a good example of this (of course is an extreme example)
observe pictures and peoples faces. keep in mind the proportions of the head, but don't get to attach to them...anyway i have to work a lot on variation, so don't believe too much on what i wrote.

thanks for stop by!

the sketch of the gangster and his moll...is not finish. i don't know if i will finish this, my original idea was to de some ink...anyway:

I agree with what you said friend. Getting out of my habits and preconceived notions of what is there is a toughy and I'm reminded of it all the time. Thanks for sharing some insider information with me. Again, great update and i hope you finish this. If you are interested in finishing this and in ink, take a look at squidmonk3j's SB.

Now a crit, about the gangster and his gal, first of all I love it and I would like to see it finished, and what I see is the girl looks a bit manish, maybe that was your idea, but I would like her with a touch of more feminity, mainly is a matter of the neck width is a bit too much, and the shoulders that looks biger caus the clothes you put on her.

spartiate:hi! yeah my influences are more form europe and argentina. yoko tsuno? hmm not really. to be honest i never read that album. i like many authors and titles but to name some: hugo pratt, solano lopez, alberto breccia, mandrafina, andré julliard(blue diary is a beautiful bd), guido crepax, blacksad(i don't remember the names right now) skydoll(i don't remember the names either) jean-pierre gibrat , Jordi Bernet is very good too, i don't like too much torpedo thou. i think i see something of djinn, i will check.
thanks for your comment

umm... some sort of landscape practice:

joiton:i think the moll's head is a bit big than should be. i try to make the dress with big shoulders , but i guess that not work very well:(. thanks a lot for the crit!

Hola otra vez! Siempre me gusta ver tus obras.

iceman478:thanks a lot! i have to do more, thou...

just a sketch....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

scottmcd:thanks a lot Scott, much apreciatted. yes, work with bic is pretty fun.
mmmh...thecnics? latly i was trying to draw more loose both with pencil and pens, so i hold the pencil in different forms. i want to work with form and silhoutes more insted of details. there is much work to do.

objectives? well i would like to do comics, thats my principal goal, besides of do things better. thanks for stop by!

this sketch start as joke after some work. i start to draw a sort of "rebel/left/fashion supergirl" and after the sketch i wanted to paint the sky and after that well, i just keep working on this...i have to draw the right hand still, but i don't know if i will finished, but i have to finish something.

wookiedabo:muchas gracias!

That is hot. Her eyes look a bit crazed (mayber giver her a darker blue), but this is nice. Can't wait to see it finished! Also, maybe work in some more vibrant/saturated colors? Don't have to be neon green or some shit, but you know....Something with more life

Stark: hehe yeah the eyes are a bit strange, i guess because of the eyerbrows i made some changes in there.i like vibrant colours in others people works, but when i use colours always choose low palette desaturated ones. in general i like to use colours for mood. i don't know i guess i have to expand my colour options. i will take this into consideration. thanks a lot!

more work on the "joke drawing"

i paint some more clouds, made some changes in her breasts and eyebrows.

still i need to make her right hand, one advice: never crop an image as i did here, leave the hands or feet out of frame is a little strange and unclear... make composition a bit wierd.
ok thats for now...

Renegade89: thanks a lot. yes sometimes a drawing can turn in something more elaborated...i hope finish it!

This looks a lot better now. Keep going with it. I still think with her having brown eyes and everything, her eyes should be more subdued that they are now. Also, she's in the sky with what seems to be a lot of lighting that isn't direct. So maybe add that in some different places that having a dark shadow in some places.

i will keep this in mind, thanks for the crit.

brokeneyeball:thanks for your comment and the spanish feedback!

well, long time since last update...the main reason is that i want to do more finished work instead of sketches..."un-finished" work has become in some sort of comfort zone to me...anyway i will put some sketches this time...with some luck next time would be something else more "finished"....

:) Has publicado algo todavía?

scottmcd:i made only fanzines and strips for a weekly newspaper.
good luck with your "historieta"! (we use the word "comic" or "historieta" to say comic ...just a cultural fun information :) ) you are correct about the last face. i worked a bit more on the values on this update.

ok...more sketches... i really have to do something finished, but i really love the freedom feel when i do sketches... bah im hopless!

Renegade89:ah good...that make more sense!hehe

Suira:hehe...well thanks...the fact is there is no chanels in my country to do this type of works(there is oportunities only in advertising) but there is many people drawing. im glad that you like what i do!

Great work on that woman portrait. You did a good job nailing down the look and everything. Again the linework is something else and it is really hard to critique a sketch with such loose, fine lines. I'll be watching still (like I'd ever leave this SB).

I love how expressive your figures are. I usually have to exaggerate anatomy to convey movement and attitude.

a girl i see in the bus...those days you think: what if...?

Just start a conversation to build comfort. A lot of what holds us back is just approach anxiety -- confidence goes a long way.

If you're interested, here's a good example of a guy getting two phone numbers on the bus (http://www.pualounge.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1088). The first post in the thread is good... the others probably don't pertain to your situation.

Again, great stuff. I need to be a prolific as you with my CA Sketchbook.

Great silhouettes DIMAGYAN. I really like how you use the white on the black figured over the grey bg.

The last batch of sketches have real good poses and weight. I would move the gunman up or over to the left a bit though to make it so it doesn't look like she's holding an action figure by the leg;)

Love your stuff though, keep it up.

mr.right:thanks! im working to be more expressive, its something very important to me,especially in the figures.well anatomic distortion is a valid way to achieve expression in my opinion.

I think I need more of your faces. How do you get so much diversity? I cannot for the life of me get my faces to look different unless i use ref and reference can only take me so far ya know? So, yeah, something finished would be fantastic. What happened to your supergirl? She was close to being finished, then you just abandoned her! ;'( Why? lol. You should have joined Last Man Standing when it got started. Maybe next time around eh? Love what I see and will continue to throw useless :asspat: at you
