I've selected three recent paintings finished between Dec '02 and last Saturday to show my progress and hopefully improvement. All three are done from my own photo-reference

first is the oldest, a still life done in acrylics.

second is a few months old. transparent digital watercolor over a scanned graphite drawing. (painter 4 with a mouse)

third is full color opaque digital, done in painter classic with an intuos.

Right now I'm mostly concerned with learning about color transitions and interactions. Tell me what you think; whats working, what's not.

thanks!

Brendan-

Your bridge piece is probably the strongest. The color and contrast is right on. While I like some of the things about the portrait (mostly the facial features, esp. the nose is great), I think other areas could use alittle more depth: crown, collar, armor.

The cat piece is really nice too, but the two top pieces are very different in style than the bottom piece (not that there isanything wrong with that, obviously, but if there was a way to bring the vibrancy of the color in the bottom piece to the fun characterizations of the top two pieces, then they would be stronger in my opinion.

Keep up the good work. Were you an Illustration major at SU? What did you think of Bob and the gang?

thanks, sean.

yeah I was an illustration major...I think Dacey and everyone did a good job of teaching what they knew: composition, concept, photoreference etc. But I think most of them were a little out of touch with the current market. Magazines, books and advertising aren't using illustration in the same ways and in the same quantities that they were in the 70's and 80's. Computer work was also an after-thought. Only Roger Demuth had required digital assignments.

Looks great to me! Your use of color is bold but harmonious. I like the stylization on your work and the varying subjects.

Agreed. I think Bob taught me the most, but Roger's assignments were the most interesting and relevant. They are definitely behind the times when it comes to digital art, it seems like they are going to have to come to grips with it, accept it, and get someone to teach it, because without emphasis on digital art and painting, the students are going to lack a very valuable skill when they leave SU.

Good luck!

i like the first one a lot.

imo the blue of the crown destroys the 2nd one pretty much

the 3rd is a bit too saturated overall, but i like the strong structure you gave it with the bridge.

keep it up!
