Well, it's nearing the 2 year anniversary of the Insect Battle fanart thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=36803&highlight=insect+battle+fanart) and I made a personal resolution to start posting in FF... so here's a little idea I had while at Insomania for a way to texture vector art to mimic cut paper.

I want to pursue this technique further, maybe add in some drybrush stuffs with Painter. I don't think it's quite at the level of deception I want, so C&C are welcome as anything. But you're not allowed to use the words "cute", "adorable", or "South Park", so dig a little deeper ;)

Wow Steph you've done it very well! I've always been confused with textures in vector programs. The bottom half of him doesn't seem to have as much texture (that was probably intentional), but it makes that half a little less believable when it comes to look like authentic paper cuts. Looks great though!

edit: maybe also if you added some mis-cut edges or something?

Jake: Ah! The legs were a mistake, I fixed 'em! I also added some eyelashes... Sutefu is a girl, but you're not the first to call her a boy ;) Thank you very much for the crit!

I know there are some great paper textures in ps that can aid in the deception. Whatever your using looks very much like construction paper, or something similar. I really don't like the goggle look, if your looking for a cut-out feel, changing opacity might not be the right path.

Needs more eyes to be faithful to the original turnaround, but looks great! /m\

It's looking great, Steph, the textures are very convincing. For the goggles, maybe you could play aound with some highlights so it looks like cellophane. Or you could have the contours follow the underlying shapes slightly so it looks like tissue paper.

You should put a link to the original Insect Battle thread so that newcomers know what the heck is going on :D.

Nice "cutout" - it works quite well already, though you might increase the deception by changing the angle of the "paper grain" on some of the shapes. Is that possible? I've never worked with textures in a vector program.

Long may the mighty insects battle!

Ugh... my biology background won't let me sign off without mentioning that scorpions aren't insects... oh well, long may they battle anyway. Lenz Flare Cannon!

That's very cool Steph. it reminds me of something out of Gunbound. people would pay 1200 GP to have a scorpion on their head.

+2 chocolates for you

Matsign: Thanks for replying! I used a scan of canson paper that I had lying around, so I was going for a heavy stock sort of look. I back you 100% on the goggles, I might try to achieve more of an acetate or tracing paper look to them if I can revisit this one.

Snarf: Haha!! I've decided to knock her eyes back to 3, since 5 was becoming cluttered and distracting to some people. As long as the "slow eye" is prevalent, I think it works ;)

Josh: :yayca: /m\ :yayca: Thanks!

Elwell: Agree with ya on the cellophane or tissue paper. That should be a fairly easy fix, me thinks, so thanks for chiming in ^_^ And the link is up in the first post - shame on me for forgetting!

CC: Yeah, I took the trouble of texturing nearly each piece seperately and I totally neglected to rotate the grain a little. It's so hard to deliberately make something look "off", you know? I did all the texturing in Photoshop, so as a lot of you know, it's easy to rotate the grain :) And leave your biology jargon at the door - she's off to fight the scorpion's natural enemy , the red scalloped-wing wasp! \w/ Thanks so much hon!

Donk: I'll just take your uneaten Peppermint bark if that's ok... ;)

Thanks again for leaving feedback guys! Ganbatte Insekuto Batteru!

well,i like it,naturally ;) though,i'd go for more saturation probably, and perhaps add a nose of some sort.
it reminds ME of wind waker, which would make this totally awesome if it was a game.
more please :)
edit: or some sidescroller ala rayman.

What an adorably, cute, South Park-ish character you've created! ;)

Seriously though, nice job. I agree with Elwell's remark about cellophane and J a k e ' s remark about mis-cut edges.
Looking forward to what you come up with in your next attempt.

you did a nice job simplifying the shapes to create a fun character and your color choices work nicely, i had to do cut paper work when i was in school and it drove me nuts, look forward to more of these, kkep up the good work
