Help!

I inadvertantly set something incorrectly. My brushes now do not paint on on any layer unles there is color already there. Also, it wil paint on the canvas.

I tried reinstalling but to no avail. I tried ttrashing the preferences but that didn't wok either.

Anybody know whats going on?

Thanks!

Hi,

As mentioned already, if the Layers palette's Preserve Transparency box is checked, you won't be able to paint on trandparent areas of the Layer.

Also, some brush variants only work on existing color. Among them:

Brush variants that use Method: Plugin
Brush variants that use Method: Drip
Brush variants in the Blenders category

Once in a while, even when they should work, some brush variants (I usually find this happens with Chalk variants) don't paint at all. When that happens, I've found the solution is to restore all brush variants in the currently loaded brush library to their default state:

Brush Selector menu > Restore All Default Variants > Click the OK button

Thank you thank you! I am new to the program and thought it was a simple solution but could not figure it out. Feel like a bonehead but am very grateful for your help!!

no prob dude, was it the preserve transparency checkbox? Painter is kinda weird about that, if you make a layer, check preserve, work on it like normal, all new layers you make from that point on have preserve checked as a default. To me, it seems like a bug they never fixed. It's the same thing on Painter 6 and Painter IX.5.

That's exactly what it was. I am baffled that throwing away preferences didn't fix it. I checked out your sketchbook... nice work!
