Obviously inspired by Phil Hale, though no where near his quality. I've always loved that blue sky of his. Had fun with this though, changed a lot while working on it. Felt very....freeform,never really got stale to me (working wise); which is something I have problems with. Used the artist oil brushes in Painter, really fun. Still trying to improve, feel like this is going in the right direction, just not there yet. Might do some more.....later....maybe. Done in Painter (duhr...I said that) 4-5 hours.

Really cool...and yeah the "Phil Hale" sky is hard not to love. His robot bashing stuff was always my favorite. One thing that I really love about his work that I think you captured in the bot, but not so much the person is the feeling of suspended motion. I think it has to do with overal sharpness of the dudes outline...plus there is kind of a motion blur on alot of the moving elements in the pic, yet the fastest moving thing (the sling) has very little blur...I dunno I'm probably talking out of my ass, you're a waaaaay better painter than I am currently so feel free to ignore my ramblings. All that having been said...

...kick ass!

Nice piece. The rendering on Davey/David's shirt and pants looks especially good to me. Is there a background story to the Goliath though?

edit. Im falling in love with that right hand of Davey's :)

Good work.

sweet doug - I love that robot, Hale-inspired for sure, but there is a lot your design sense in it as well. If you made it a little clearer that his head was tilted up, looking at the robot, It would make it stronger.

Very nice doug, I agree with Mandryk, you can still sense your own design in it, especially in the robot. One thing that I think would have looked good, is to use some type of grounding. mr hale always uses those diagonal grounds, maybe something like that would have pushed the peice a little further. but none the less, it looks fabulous!

This piece makes me wanna paint sometihing. Very nicely done, especially within the handling of the bot, reminds me of Mr. Jones in that as well. Keep cranking pieces out man, you're getting there -

Quoted for truth.
The other thing that'd be nice to see is his shoes planted on the floor.

Beautiful piece regardless. :)

Hey thanks! I really quickly was testing out the slanted ground and tipping his head up, and it made a huge difference. I'll try it for reals at lunch, or tonight. Thanks again!

I think this is a really nice looking piece but I have a few comments. I am not sure if anyone has made these comments yet. First is I feel that the image could stand to be alittle cleaner overall. I know its phil hale inspired, but I feel that the 2 characters has a different stylistic feel too them, mainly cause on David, you have some dark outlines still showing, giving him a comic/cartoony look, though I dont have a phil hale image infront of me at the moment, I dont think he usually puts an dark outlines around his figures. I would like to see some sharper edges on the robot, mainly on his front claw/hand to help push its dynamic more. Finally on David, I feel that his porortions and pose could be better. Right now his torso is feeling long, I like the dynamics in his legs, but then his back becomes too straight, stiffing ups his pose, I dont feel like he is going to put enough umph in his throw to know that robot down. Now for the things I really like about it, I really love the design and pose of that robot, it feels like he is going to take David out. I also like the lighting and the brush work on alot of the image, its quite nice. I hope that helps.

Can't say if it's my favorite of yours, I think there could be more action. They both seem to be posing, not fighting... I always imagined David doin like a tuck'n'roll then totally LAAAUNCHING his rock at like super light speed right into Gol-gol's grey matter. This sort seems more like flashy slingshot-kung-fu.

I mean, no offense- I hold you in huge standard from the likes I have seen from you, and personally, this just doesn't live up to that as much as say, your GW stuff or your LMS pieces. Just gotta be honest man =)

ooo nice :D kinda reminds me of a slingshot-wielding character that ive seen ashley wood illustrate, and somewhat of the hollow soldiers from neverending story. the hale influences are definately there. great stuff :)

Awesome painting! The only thing that's bothering me is that the guy looks like he's cropped inthere for some reason...maybe add some more blue into the guy? I don't know. I'm still learning myself.

Hi there,

Very juicy colors. Nice composition as well. Something's wrong with Davids bottom, i think. Not sure though...
BTW, anyone knows if Phil Hale has a homepage? Can't find it...

Hey Dougbot, thats pretty amazing, I have a question about the artist oils, I always liked them, but I'm curious if you did any custom modifications to the brushes?

Hey thanks all, I appreciate the feedback. I can see it's pretty obvious that the guy isn't working. I'll try reworking him all over later. I really do appreciate the crits; I'm really bad at figures in general. I might try and shoot some reference tonight and work from that. Although...Davey might get a bit pudgier :bashful:

Mr-Joe, I used the Painter 9 artist oils on Davey, just the basic ones. And the primarily the palette knife on Goliath.
