Compress images, they shouldn't be more than 200k
Topic: Future Noir Transport
Background: You've been asked to design a transport for a future noir game/film. After defeating one of the henchman the protagonist has to get to the secret (underground/underwater/in orbit) base. Design the vehicle to get him there, and specify how he obtains it.
Brief:
1. Design something to get the hero to the secret base.
2. Future noir = film noir + future.
Deadline: Saturday 20th January (You have a bit of extra time, so make use of it)
Is this easy enough?

Industrial design... I know how much I suck in this category... Let's find out how much...

Interesting but challenging topic I would say.
Difficult to break noir down into any particular design aesthetic - to my mind the risk would be straying into pulp designs for classic noir or toward cyber-punk for future-noir like bladerunner.
Good to think about such things though, see what I can produce for this.

Flip: I assume that it is okay to use 3D for this contest.

Work has taken over my life, so I will have to weak-out of this one.

evamonkeyn2 - Think 1930's black and white detective movies.
This sounds like a great topic, I'll give it a shot.:teeth:

VERY VERY NICE WORK.:jawdrop: I'm working on a hovercar as well... a 51 mercury-ish one though.

Here is my picture. I didn't reference any vehicle in particular, but I wanted it to look quite sinister.

Description: This car belongs to a corrupt politician. It is the only car allowed to pass unchecked into the high security bunker, and is the mode of entry chosen by the spy, who is attempting to expose the highly secretive work going on there.

goran: Le fantastico! Great that you know how to use traditional media like that! Marker action sweetness!!! Great design!
Larkin Please tell me you're going to polish it more! This has a lot of potential. I'd tighten the highlights and make it sexy. Also a nice ground. The lights take away from it being sinister looking - they look like sleepy eyes ;p

I love them.

Goran Thank you, and I really love your marker work, it looks great.
dragon4lunch Thanks for the tip, I think I will try and polish the highlights a bit more. I didn't see the eyes as sleepy until you pointed it out; I think its because of the shape of the bonnet. Don't think I'll change them though, as its not in the design brief.

Larkin - I like direction you've taken - however the shape of the headlights could be improved, given the swooping, aerodynamic 30's look of the rest of the car, they look like a graft from an 80's Ferrari or Lotus.
Goran - Love the design, but the type and background may be detracting from the purity of the original image. Also, if you didn't look at the Mercedes 500K roadster for inspiration -that's crazy! :xpld:

Graphuji-Thanks for your comment. Of course that I check the references.
My idea was 1930 film noire so I check the cars from that period.
And I did "little twist" on them. Make the stuff more believable in
some unbelievable way.
The idea for the background was the frame for the movie ,it is still
WIP ,we will see.

evamonkeyn2: In addition to Blade Runner and the 30's detective stuff, the Film noir genre was also strongly represented in the 40s by stuff like The Maltese Falcon, The Killers, and The Big Sleep, and the 50s by stuff like Touch of Evil.
See also Chinatown from the 70s.
The bad guys are bad, the good guys are always streetwise and usually a little bad in their own right. It's generally hard to figure out where to draw the line between good and bad and you never know who's on your side for sure.

Thanks man, i had a good read on wikipedia about it, and found from that that noir is not cut into a particular genre aka detective stories etc, but is rather catagorized by unusual camera work, and heavily contrasting lighting setups such as the classic of the white and black light shadow banding produced by blinds. There was talk of western set noir and everything, and even noir that was in colour LOL. I have my design in p shop as we speak, and i hope to post her up before nights end.
I think like everyone else here i was obcessed with drawing a hover car. I have tried to take a 30's-50's curve based approach to the design, with a more 20's esque flourish to it by incorporating some of the older style of car headlight and a rethink on the running boards found on really old cars(at least from my memory, i dont want to look up any car in particular lest i adopt the design in any meaningful way from it. At this point its almost fully rendered, but i want to make sure its as good as i can get it before posting.
fingers crossed i get it right.
Larkin, i really love the almost matt effect paint job, the way it pulls the red up from the carpet is ace!
goran, that design is properly old school. The metal finish looks dead on and i especially love the treatment of the back wheel area.

Exactly. If you got the right lighting and angles, all kinds of stuff is fair game.

"I put in a bypass circuit with a switch so I could cut the power to the guardhouse. Using the switch accomplished two things. First, the guard came running around to the utility box to see what happened. More importantly, any video feed to below was hopefully cut off. I had to subdue the guard without killing him, so when I briefly turned back on the power with my remote I could use his hand on the livescan actuator. I pushed him onto the gondola. The reception committee below would probably kill him when they shot up the gondola. These things can't be helped. I just hoped nobody saw me on a video camera, and they were stupid enough to send the whole reception committee up to the guardhouse when they found the dead guard. I planned to be on the other gondola because there was no way I could climb down into the facility with all that ice on the walls."

"Dis is a very beautiful machine Jimmy. Very nice.
Uncomfortable silence
I spent fifteen years on the force Jimmy, and i could only dream about sumthin' like dis. But here you are, two years in and a dapper man about town Jimmy, a dapper fuckin' man. And when someone like you, like you used to be, a cop with nothing to lose, no family to worry about... is in the hands of the don mazulas, well... i have to wonder Jimmy, who the hell aint? You have to wonder about whats worth saving.
Thats why im takin' these keys Jimmy. I figure, if im gonna go out, its gonna be in style Jimmy.
Its all about style."

The concept is called Falcone. Im a little annoyed about the slight blur which occured in jpegification. As quite a last minute thing i ended up making it a BMW for some reason. I wanted with this image more than anything else to have that banded light situation i kept reading about, and i tried to position the light source so that the volume light reacting with the undercoat would allow the volume light bands to move in the same direction across the car, rather than in the opposite direction, as would have occured with a direct light source reflection. Im not sure i pull this off at all or if its even possible. By making those vertical lines clash with the mainly horizontal alignment of the vehicle i hoped it would draw attention to it and add some drama.
The running board esque arrangements were a somewhat late addition to the design, in that without them, it was looking a little more like a boat from the underside lines. And visually inclined to tip over. The fore and aft extensions of the running board are almost like wheel arches rotated maybe 120 degrees off vertical, and would in theroy house some of the 'floater tech' elements of the hover car.
The colour scheme was deep red and white till i realised at one point it was looking a little too much like an entry for the new santa transport topic i saw a few days ago. XD
As for the text blurb to frame the image, i just wanted to give the idea at the end that he may be leaving the city or confronting the mob with no chance of survival. And to have a great deal of ambiguity about which he planned to do.
Personally, id take the hover car and head for hover mexico.

arttorney. Original idea man hahah, in a world of hover cars it stands out as by far the most original. The blurb also makes me think of playing perfect darks snow/mountain bunker level..... drool perfect dark. How were the foreground mountain structures done?

I painted black gouache on a piece of glass and squashed a piece of watercolor paper on it. Then I darkened it up after it was dry by rubbing a charcoal stick sideways on it.

I think you guys are putting out some great stuff, but you are limiting yourselves with the hovercar designs. Noir as a genre is more about being black, morally ambigious, and very hard. Both in the sense of lighting and about life being cheap. It is the literary forefather of punk. Noir is about tension and restrained emotion, just about to break, doesn't matter if it is violence or lust.
Great stuff thou. Love your designs.

January 18th, 2007, 05:33 AM
haha, well i only had a 4 minute wikipedia introduction to noir , hence the banded light and threat of violence etc.
Also, i have never designed anything like what i did for this. Ever. So im happy with it.XD

The secret base was over 15 light years away. Following my encounter with Spade Kang-Bido, I spent 6 months sifting through the gloam of Amstertown, looking for any passage to the faraway star system. No dice. The base was a secret base, after all, and no ordinary channels would get me there. One night during a rooster pit fight, my luck broke. A strung up Cake dealer, Snecky, was bragging about his 'business'. Told me about one of his customers that was 15 light years out that couldn't get enough of his stuff. He sent regular shipments via unregisterd freight pilots. Snecky didn't reveal the name of the ship, but after a few days of snooping around the sleazy maintenance docks, i found it. The 'Edna' wasn't much to look at. It might have been prettier on it's inaugural voyage, but had suffered from neglect and paid the predictable price. For me, it was a beautiful sight to behold. Two hundred meters down the runway, and this wonderful beast was going to bring me right to the doorstep of my enemy. The price? All the money I had in this world...and 15 years of my life stuck in a glass freezer tube. Revenge can be costly at times. I walked down the long gangplank, looking forward to a dish that was to be served so very cold.

When the vehicle broke from the city's choking black fog, time seemed to stop. Orange cream clouds drifted across paint that had never before touched direct sunlight. Drake's hand eased off the throttle.
They had escaped but their time together was rapidly fading. Shelly's breathing came in short, desperate bursts as her warm life continued to puddle into the grooves of the leather bench seat. The sunset reflected off her wet eyes and into his and the only words his mouth could form were, "Thank you".
