nice way to block in the head. i'd try not to get into the highlights til the very last step. try to mix your colors a bit more too.

that's all i can say right now since it is the beginning steps. just keep going and blend your colors well.

um... also, I'm new at this whole forum thing, and I was wondering how you hotlinked your sketchbook to your name?

Coen
January 9th, 2007, 05:56 AM
Hey minjarr nice start! Maybe it would be nice to make some kind of color texture in the background to make it more realistic (instead of pure black).

To get a link to your sketchbook under your message:

- go to 'User CP' (upper left corner of the page)
- on the left, click 'Edit Signature'
- click on the 'Insert Link' button above the textbox (the one with the little globe and the chain)
- paste the url of you sketchbook (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86824) in it. You can type a title in the selected space after clicking ok.

Oh btw, when you reply, make sure 'Show your signature' is checked

Wow, thanks for the response in my sketchbook. I figured at very least I owed you one, but I've gotta say, I've very glad I took a look at your sketchbook. The topmost image is great. I'd like to see you do more realism, but I love your color pallettes. Keep it up. I'd like to see what you do with some more character designs.

Hey dude. That's crazy, i've seen this sketchbook before but had no idea it was yours. You've got some really killer stuff in here. The monster you posted up earlier today that you were doing in Linda's office is really good, especially for how quick you busted it out. I'd like to see more of your digital stuff though. You seem more comfortable with pencil and paper but the few digital sketches of yours that i've seen were really cool.
The only thing i can really critique is that some of the faces on your characters look a little overworked. Like if the detail in some of the faces were taken down just a notch it might look good and save time in the longrun. But yeah thats just personal opinion, something maybe to experiment with. I really like everything in here though, really impressed, keep on truckin.

Gave you some stars! Very nice work here. Your anatomy studies are beautiful and the lighting in your digital pieces is immaculate. I Look forward to more finished works here. Great creature designs too!

I have a crit for your spaceman design in the last post. The tip of his gun is riding too close to the left hand margin of the full figure pic. Its pulling the eye away from the figure. The shadowed areas of the figure are a bit too saturated with color and seem to bright. This flattens him out a bit.

Thanks for checking out my sketchbook and leaving kind words! Keep up the excellent work.

minjarr
March 4th, 2007, 09:04 PM
thanks, I think I'm going to work on detailing the gun out a bit better, by adding a scope and shortening the barrell. As far as the shadows I think they do look a little unsaturated and I'll try to make them more distinct.

I have a 6 page essay to write right now, but I'll get to as soon as I can.

Thanks for the advice

keep it coming though!!

I really like that process piece, it's interesting to see how u work. It makes me want to post one. It's very subjective, but I almost liked your initial composition idea better than the one with alyx, though. something about the first one i think seemed more balanced, or maybe it had more drama.
Also, I kind of feel like gordon should be contrasted out more or alyx knocked back with a little atmospheric perspective. It looks like the story of the drawing is more about gordon than alyx, but they both have really similar levels of contrast and detail and it's hard to tell where the focal point is. Anyway, that's all i can see to crit at the moment. it looks very nice. Hope my crits are useful.

Let's see, as to your earlier question..It looks more to me like they're falling through a tornado, since the clouds are sort of circling them. Though, maybe that's how it works. I've never actually fallen through the sky before. :'[ -inexperienced- Hm..the colors of the sky are a little too streaked right now. Whats going on Minjarr, nice progression man, like your choice of colors in your recent digi. In the piece with the 3 goblins, I think you need to simply the background man, Its very distracting from the figures. I would also work on composition placement. It seems to me that they're just stacked behind the other, maybe move the foreground goblin to the left, or add more goblins to break up the composition thus far. When first looking at the goblin piece it read more like they're running down a cave or something. Penils are looking good. Keep working hard man, its really showing through. I know your wondering when i'm going to be posting color, its on the way.

Will be around, take care man

yeppers, my teacher advised me to "fantasy" the way I would do it, so I'm starting on it and seeing where it takes me. Those are some of the first sketches from the "my version" fantasy world.

I'm really enjoying it, but now I have to go back and add LIFE to it!!

minjarr
May 7th, 2007, 02:24 AM
about six hours, all painted with a round brush, except that little drippy thingy in the back. I've been forcing myself not to use brushes for like six months now. It's tiring, but I think it's slowly making me a little better. Forcing me to paint the texture work and everything, plus it's kind of fun.

I really love your sketchbook. Anatomy studies back on page one look amazing, other pencil sketches too. Your painting skills need some honing though :) Your doing great job with rendering and showing form and lighting but colors look a bit too sterile for me - they need some more variations. Also work on the skin tones :) I know how hard it is to get the colors right - I'm also still strugling with my paintings.

this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1328128&postcount=151) has a feel of frazetta to it , the pose is really excellent, could gve more slouch to the belly but its justa sketch.
Coudlnt sleep? hmmm, man I wish I could do that too. But I am a sleepy head.
so crits on the lsat colors? hmm some values are out of place.you could give the skin tone a bit more tanned look ,add some cold colors too. But Its better to not listen to me,I dont know jack about colors.hehe.

Mr.Joe- Thank you soo much for introducing me to the fine art section. I'm still very new to this whole drawing and painting part of things. I've been going to school for 3D for like 3 yrs, but now that's over and I'm trying to think of how to further my 2D art skills.

NE suggestions of any great schools?

Mr-Joe
July 16th, 2007, 06:48 AM
Hey No problem, The last portrait Oil looks really good, did you use reference?

As for suggestions for schools, I don't know all that much about that, I suppose it depends on what your trying to learn, My suggestion would be to dig through these forums, theres so much information in here, and books, There are some real good books and if you read through them and study and practice i'm sure you can accomplish what you want. I have no post high school, schooling, Although my skills arn't where yours are I'm not defending not going to school , but I feel that I've learned a lot and improved a lot in a couple years of just learning from others on these forums and through books and practice.

By the look of your 2d drawing work in this sketchbook it looks like you already had some training of some sort, your understanding of anatomy seems to be very good, and if you haven't had some training already then by the look of your artwork you seem to have the determination to learn no matter what the circumstance is.

There is also a section for Art schools and education here : http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15 Theres some good information about some schools there.

If I were to go to a school, from what I know now I would most likely choose an atelier, and focus on studying foundations in art. Or I would probably find a artist who teaches, who's work I like or how he teaches and ask to learn from them.

By the way what school did you go to?

Oh also, out of curiosity on your grad show picture it shows you standing to the left and sais "nate, 2d artist" and the guy on the right is standing under "jason, 3d" are you the 2d concept artist?

Doin' just fine yourself, pardner.

Keep up the painting! Lemme know if you're gonna take Nathan's painting class. I know it's a bitch of a drive, but it might just be the right time for you to take it--seeing as how you're painting so much lately.

SOoooo, my fourth stab at oil, and I think, no wait, yep I have no idea what I'm doing with it yet.

All I can say is that it feels right to use oil, and I'm starting to hate digital. (sorry!)

Anyway, here's that and a quick sketch

232 also stands out as pretty nice
i really like the less obvious color choices in 232 where u have these oranges that really pop. more figure studies wouldnt hurt. more hands too!
