ccsears-I'll be in LA when you're available to hang! Just call me up, I'll email you my digis if you don't have it already. As far as Nathan's class, I would love to, but I'm training up and then eventually going to move up the LA (eventually).

Hey hows it going nate,
Nice progress with the oils.
I don't have any crits right now, I was browsing the sketchbook section and saw your thread and figured I'd see what you've been up to, the last few pencil renderings are top notch.

oh man, why do i always have to be the one guy that comes in with actual crits. this forum is turning into cgtalk, a hug fest. anyway your stuff is awesome, but it doesnt look as cool as it should. i understand that the default 19 hard brush with fade is one of the greatest most simple brushes known to man, but it is really giving away that these are just doodles. they are just as finished as most sparth or calader sketches, but theirs look more solid. so either make a really dope sketch brush (i just do a gradient in a little marque section then chunk it up, gives the effect of charcoal) or use that charcoal brush that is built into photoshop. you have to tweak the settings on it, but it is solid if you use it right.
so that is my crit, do that and you can make a portfolio out of these doodles.
ps, oils are lookin dope, thats the texture your digital should have

heyooo!!!
Mr-Joe: I'm doing pretty good, just doing freelance and studying my ass off like everyone else I spose, mostly though, I'm trying to love every moment.-and thanks!
RichKid: So I made some brushes (see bottom) and I'll put them in use probably tomorrow. I'm really not to keen on brushes simply because I think it can make people lazy, but I do agree that the digital things are looking very "clean" and I must add to create a creative chaos. Thank you for the crit, I really appreciate it.
CartoonFox: Thanks and I will, until my eyes rot and brain follows
here's those brushes I made let me know what you think of them and perhaps anymore that you can think of. (these were fun!)

Hey Nate, brushes look good, is that photoshop?
In response to that question, I have not taken any of Bobby Chui's workshops, but I was actually thinking about it at one time, I like his work a lot.
But those caricatures I did were more inspired by this guy Francis Vallejo, theres a link to his sketchbook in my signature, but the dragon sketch that I did was inspired by Bobby Chui's new Dragon sketches book.

This is a really nice thread. Well done.
I know that you posted it a while ago, and may have since made your decision, but I have a thought for the painting you last posted on Feb 14:
I don't know how well a completely white background would work for this. I think that the current color scheme for the background works well, it just has a few distracting elements. I really like the tan-ish pants color at the bottom transitioning through the white-ish into the pink-ish. I also really like the feel of this painting--it's dreamlike, ethereal. I'd love to see it finished.
Awesome job.

I really like the shape of the lapels on the mobster's suit. They make him look like a badass. The quickies are nice too. The first one has a great mood, and I like the use of orange and blue on the portrait. One thing on the portrait: you might consider giving that ear a little more attention. It reads as a little less developed than the other features, and kinda flattens. Regardless, the whole thing works really well. Nice work.

Thanks everyone for the support.
So normally, I try to keep my internet personal a mystery but I need to express myself right now.
This forum, for the most part really helps me to keep going. It reminds me of the light at the end of the tunnel. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you to those of you commenting on my page because it really means a lot to me. it's hard for me being stuck in a studio all day everyday will very little if any human interaction. So, as you can see, tend to fuck with my head a bit. This may cause me to be too critical and lose motivation or keep me trapped in a bubble from which I myself have created. In the end, I just need to remember my goals and tell myself to "fuck society".
Thanks concept art people, I greatly appreciate your support.
Enough of that emotional BS, I'll be doing some intense renderings of cubes and boxes and hopefully some more paintings both digital and oil but that means less updates.
So, I'll be around, but I need to discipline my ambition right now and give it direction!
PEACE for a bit...

Hey, it's good to have you back. The traditional stuff is especially wonderful. How did you do that grayscale portrait?
EDIT: looking back again, wanted to comment on the UNMASKED piece....
This one is coming along really well. I didn't catch it until the second time around, but I like the way you echoed the lightning bolt on his suit with the crackle of electricity touching his head. Also, a few questions: The line running down the left side of the piece--does that have meaning, or does it serve a more graphic purpose? It looks kind of like the line on the pulse moniter to me, is it meant to suggest it? And one more question, accompanied by a somewhat brash suggestion-- Are the dots and dashes underneath the title morse code? It might make a nice, if oft-missed, touch.

July 26th, 2008, 12:02 PM
sedig- I did the grayscale portrait with charcoal pencils, and charcoal powder. the process was to mass in parts with the powder ( knowing you can't get a full range of values) then very painfully go in with the charcoal pencil as sharp as you possibly can get it and hatch in the gradients line by line. If any of the lines are uneven, you have to go back and erase. It's a very painful experience, but it's meant to help learn how to notice very subtle gradients.
On the poster, the line is supposed to be a suggested pulse line, good catch, I didn't think anyone would see that. Anywho, Thank you for your comments
OmenSpirits- Everything I do, I try to be true to myself and not get caught up in doing things just to get noticed. So there is a lot of my own day to day feelings and personality going in there. (not much digi stuff finished though) Anyway, Thank you for being kind and thoughtful

The enviros you've been churning out lately are just so freaking sweet. The colours, lighting, atmosphere, perspective, everything seems to fall into place. This is just a feast to my eyes.
Like Sedig pointed out, seeing some of these developed further would be nice to see. Thumbs are obviously good for studies and such but it'd be amazing to see a fully blown out illustration or matte painting occasionally too!
I'll be back, keep up the amazing work :)

yuza- Thanks man, and I will keep pushing it, as far as I can go until I die
Verehin-thanks
sedig- That makes me feel nice inside, thanks you :)
victorb- thanks!
jedininjaman- thank you, and cool name
asab- I'll be tightening up my stuff once I'm done with the thumbs exercise. It's hard for me to do those.
So here's what I've been up...
Went to Siggraph, for all of you that don't know about it, it's a convention basically for animation but a lot of game studios were there too. (big job fair)
When I was there talked to some people, got into some nice parties, and mainly connected with a bunch of people from the industry, mainly visual development, and tried to see what they might want in someone to higher. Mainly, cause I don't really like just doing concept, it's very technical and they want very rendered artwork. (tedious... rewarding, but tedious)
My conclusion- paint everyday, gathering as much knowledge on composition and color, and tehn finish off with some really badass shots.
To carry out this idea I force myself to go outside and paint everyday without exception other than too much sun and then come home and study the greats. (ex. edgar payne, Nathan Fowkes, Paul Lasaine etc) alongside working on a story to tie everything together and end up with a really badass portfolio.
So you'll be seeing a lot of watercolor, oil, and copies of the greats in digital or traditional.
Sorry, for the long rant. I just figured it's my thread why the hell not. I mean who really cares what I say anyway?
I'm not sure if all this hard work will ever pay off, and I'm not sure how long I'll be doing this. I might just switch and focus my studies on more of a fine art basis. All I know is that in a month or so, I'll know what to do. And it might be back to Discount Tire Co. for me.
A Note though,... to all of you that do what you love, never give up. It may not ever happen, but at least, you did what you love.
I'll post some more, once I scan, and photo it all. (zbrush was cause I got bored and can't afford, real clay)

Great stuff. It's nice to see all the enviro studies you've been doing.
For the unmasked thing, it's looking great for how far along it is.

hey guys, thanks for the kind words.
Um.. someone asked for some upclose shots of what I do. I normally don't do that unless it's for a client, mainly because the size you see them at is the size that I paint them at (so normally no zooming in) but I did do some for you
so these are some ongoing things, cowboy stuff, visual development thumbs, and some visual dev for a story that me and a friend are working on.

so I'm adding in there a close up of what I did. I know, nothing is still not finished, sorry bout that, I'm still trying to figure this whole photoshop thing out. So once I do I promise to do some really sweet things. For now, you'll just have to do with my poor quick stuff.
Oh, also at the bottom I added some brushes that I've been working on. If anyone has any more information on brushes or any that I could have, I would be greatly in your debt. If anyone wants any information on my brushes I would be more than welcome to accomadate also.
Peace beeznachez!!

Man some nice stuff, i still really like those environment studies, do you think they influence your imagination shit already?
I got a question as far as custom brushes, maybe im slow or its just not clicking correctly for me right but whenever I try to use a mix of custom brushes to get some texture into an image it just turns out inconsistent and splotchy, how do you decide when to use them or whatever. Sorry for the dumb question, its been urkin me lately.

cool work minjarr, thanks for stoppin by my sketchbook :) This recent one is coming along nicely. Slap a background on that badboy! and i think the face would benifit from using hard brushes to define the planes of the face more. I think the eyes need to be a big bigger as well, Cheers :D
ps. know anything about making custom brushes in painter?? i just use the default ones

aveh- yeah, the enviros influence everything I do. that's why I do them. It's easier to say answer questions like, "what does a rainy day look like?" or sunny, or whatever. I don't have to invent as much, and I think it's very important to understand what your doing and how it works that way you can apply it later in your own work.
as far as custom brushes, try to think about what the texture brush is being used for. The purpose. Many people love sargent, and I'm one of them, but they didn't only use one texture brush, or a whole bunch, they would only use what was needed for that peice. I know, it's hard, I'm still asking that question myself.
oalexis- that hard brushes are important for adding structure and I need that in that image. Thanks
so here's today's stuff, one enviro ref and 2 imagination. (still messing with brushes)

so here are my attempts at using some more brushes. I think I'm starting to understand some concepts of it all, and it seems to very closely related to the way traditional art is done, but in a different way if that makes any sense...
these are my baby steps...
