Hi everyone, I'm a long time lurker here at conceptart who finally gathered enough courage to post. Here I'm starting a sketchbook to encourage myself to draw regulary and improve my technique. I should be able to update atleast once in a week or so. Critiques are welcome!

Welcome to CA, looks like you have a good stand on your anatomy, so no recommendations for books. Thses look great, just keep studying those books you already have. You've got a nice comic style from what I see, would like to see some fully rendered pics, cant wait for more. Keep posting.

nice stuff. here there I can see tht you are a bit harsh with the pencil (like around the lips of the chainsaw guy), but I am seeing that you are doing good anatomy and especially hands (awesome hands :) ). continue doing your stuff and practice! woot!

Thanks for looking at my sketchbook! really like the hand studies, and Envisor is right, you've got your anatomy sorted. can we see an action scene? pretty please? with sprinkles..and..um..other stuff(not entirely sure what other confectionary goes well with please)

Thanks everyone for your comments. It keeps me drawing and helps me improve. Sorry cherryworx for not posting any action scenes this time :P Guess I'm just not confident enough. But all things come to he who waits >:D
Here's a study on the female torso (I'm not very experienced at drawing dames) and an undead SS-officer ;)

Keep going with the studies, they'll help you a lot more in the long run than doing stuff of the top of your head.
The hand and torso studies are coming along really nicely though.

I havn't been able to draw anything satisfying lately. I havn't had much motivation or energy and my content for drawing is waning. I will keep on drawing and hope that the motivation soon will return :) Here's some quick studies.

You have a pretty good sense of dynamic action, and a better understanding of small detail than me!
Keep up the studies and don't let artists block leave your paper blank!

Its a good thing u have started with anatomy studies!
But i think u need to concentrate more on the constructive aspect of the body forst of all.Even though it is "boring" once u have mastered that u can concentrate on more fun stuff!
These sketches show that u have a good eye for drawing muscles tho!
Keep up the drawing :D

Haha, I love that giant bunny. :D
It's awesome that you do this many studies, but as alert said, you should focus a bit more on the constructive aspect. You seem to have some trouble with joints. Like the hips and shoulders.
But keep working. It's clear that you have a lot of potential.

January 23rd, 2007, 07:46 AM
Thanks for your comment, Hai. I'll always thought my joints looked kind of wierd but I never really thought about it for to long. Thanks for pointing it out! I drew some shoulders today and some muscles.

These studies are well drawn. I'd say focus more on how the muscles connect together and flow as a mass of shapes rather then worrying so much about every little bump or divot.
ya know big b4 small, vague b4 descriptive, loose b4 tight etc. etc.:yayca:

Thanks for checking out my sketchbook! L:ike already mentioned, you've got a good intial grasp of poses. Try and keep your pencil marks to one single line, as Marko says...if you learn to draw with a single line you will learn more from the process than using lots of lines. This method forces you to study the chosen area harder. Thanks and keep posting!

Great studies so far, I really like the hand studies the best. It seems that these studies are working, your lines are getting more confindent with each post. You should add more contrast to your studies, it will give you the benefit of working with shading, lighting as well as working with anatomy, muscle, form etc. Other then that just keep pushing yourself. Also thanks for posting in my sb, I will be keeping an eye on this sb. :teeth:

You seem to like zombies :)
Sorry that it took me so long to visit here after your comment in my sb.
I can see that you have good potential and already show improvement.
And like all the others said the studies are helping you, so keep doing these.
What could be cool for your zombie stuff is not to try inventing some crazy faces, but draw peole from life and maybe draw parts of the body with ripped apart flesh or showing bones and muscles under there. That would be life drawing, figure and anatomy study in one :D . Lol, just a stupid idea here

I'm not particularly fascinated of zombies but they can be fun to draw. My nickname is from years back when I started using it as a nickname online and I just made a habbit of it :P The only drawing intended to portrait a zombie here is the SS Officer. I understand that many of my drawings may look like zombies (maybe because I sometimes leave the eyes blank and expressionless or because I make the characters a little rugged). The guy with a chainsaw is actually Leatherface from Texas Chain Saw Massacre with a human skin mask. So no, I'm not obsessed ith zombies but I understand it's a common belief after skimming through my sketchbook :P
I get your idea, Sonaj, and I think it's good. Seems like good training. Just wanted to point out that I'm not trying to draw zombies all the time, it just looks like it :)
Oh, and here's something I drew just now just for posting this (trying to get sketches in all of my posts in the sketchbook).

I haven't updated in a while now (truth is, I haven't drawn at all) so I thought it would be a good time to draw and post something here. I didn't fell like drawing at all when I drew this but I guess it turned out ok anyway (except the skeleton hand, ugh.. terrible). I must get over my laziness, lack of inspiration or whatever it is that's holding me back! :painting:

Study looks good. The skeleton one turned out good too. As long as your drawing, itll help you improve so dont worry about hitting a slump every once in a while. Sometimes it helps to keep drawing anyway, and you'll get the motivation while your drawing.

Another small update. These are some badly drawn and unnamed creature concepts. I was really hesitant to upload them but I figured what the heck, flame away. I hope I'll get more time to draw soon, my updates are getting far and few in between.
First one:
These frightful beasts stalk the night in packs and hunt prey. They are extremely aggressive if they are hungry or protect territory and will not hesitate to attack humans.
Active: Night
Durability: Medium
Habitat: Jungles
Second:
This slimy cephalopod is half-adapted to life above the waves but requires daily baths to not dry out. Because of this they live in shallow water but will occasionally crawl up on shore to feed on seaweed, carcasses and other organic material. It is to slow and small to pose any threat to humans (unless tied to the ground).

Hi there. Thanks for droppin by my lil sketchbook. Much appreciated. Ypu have so many studies here, I'm beginning to feel lazy hehe. Keep working on them, and you will go far. Your sketching ability is good, but i would suggest upping the contrast a bit more. practice drawing objects under a directed lightsource, and try to sketch the object, bearing in thought the direction of the lightsource. Its a great exercise to improve your contrast!
All the best,
amer-nazri

Thanks for your advice, amer-nazri. Did some fast and simple shading on some basic shapes. Didn't try any shading on the human figure though but I'll get to that later. Each object has it's own light source, that's why it looks a little wierd when they're put together.

Thanks for visiting my sketchbook Zombie ^^
I want to ask you something though, if you don't mind. I looked through your stuff. Other than some perspective issue (same as me :P) I think it's basically all going good.
The only other thing that, well, bothers me, I suppose you can say that, is that your pics are kind of faint. Is it your scanner or is it because you use a hard, light pencil? If you use a hard pencil, can I be forward enough to suggest you change to a softer one? Something like 4B maybe lol, because your stuff are nice, but the lines aren't strong enough to bring it out. Everything looks kinda washed out and not there, if you know what I mean?
CP
Edit:
I guess I have one more thing to add ^^. A friend of mine told me an easy and quick way to check to see if you got your perspective right. Doesn't tell you how to get the right perspective, but at least you'd know when you're wrong lol.

Nice to see someone really going for the studies. :)
If you have trouble getting motivation to actually draw though, it might be because it's tedious and at times boring JUST to do studies. You can solve that by doing some fun, out of the mind sketches as warm ups before you do the serious stuff, and maybe reward yourself a few mins of sillyness after a real good studie is done? :) Take breaks in the studies, like drawing that giant rabbit, before you take on next subject.
Just a suggestion, hope you get your motivation. :)
Zombie_dla
March 4th, 2007, 05:46 AM
Aah, thanks for pointing that out Couchpotato, can't believe I didn't thought about it. Thanks :) I made some perspective on cubes today to compensate. They're freehand without perspective lines thought, so they're probably wrong :S And I'm using a pretty lousy mechanical pencil. Guess it's kinda hard but my drawings look _slightly_ lighter after I scan them so both are probably responsible for the lack of contrast. I'll try to tweak my sketches in PS next time :)
I enjoy most studies but I must confess alot of them are really boring too. I'm putting in some random stuff just for fun as you might have noticed, Sorknes, just to keep me going ;) I'll try to warm up as you suggested, thanks for commenting.

Hi good to see your staring with anatomy, and the most important thing is lots of pic's. Working hard is a good thing aslong as you enjoy it.
I do like the bunny tho, it put a smile on my face. :)
Keep all the stuff comming and maybe try some block contrast on your people studys as that might help in the flow of joints?
All good stuff tho
CouchPotato
March 7th, 2007, 07:28 PM
Hey man, I'm glad I can be of service, but all thanks should go to this friend of mine who's been really generous in sharing his knowledge with me. A lot of the things he made me do when I started out, I didn't even realise the importance of. It's only like now that I'm starting to piece together what he taught me and integrate them.
One thing though, I don't think it's a good idea to use mechanical pencil and then relying on Photoshop to toughen up your lines. I suppose it's ok to use Photoshop to ink in, but I think it would be far better to have good pencil lines from the start.
And another thing, about your current cubes. Most of them are right in a scientific way. But you'll probably never get cubes looking like that unless you look from very very far away or you are looking through a powerful telephoto lens (lenses with narrow angles, artifically increases perspective by a lot). Your vanishing points are too close to one another. Usually, for a realistic cube thing, the vanishing points go all the way out of the paper lol.

Two creature concepts:
Bardodont
These massive herbivores walk the steppes in flocks eating plants and grass most of the day. Unless provoked they are peaceful although they can get very aggressive when protecting their young.
Active: Day
Size: ca. 2000 kg (ca. 4409 pounds)
Durability: Tough
Habitat: Steppes
Rootdrake
These animals dig tunnels in the ground for shelter and food. They are omnivores and mostly eat roots, fruit and small animals. They pose a medium threat to humans as they can be very aggressive if a human comes near their lair or a very hungry rootdrake.
Active: Day/Night
Size: ca. 200 kg (ca. 441 pounds)
Durability: Tough
Habitat: Steppes and deserts.

Sorry to dissapoint you Envisor but I won't be doing anything that serious for a while. Gonna practice on my lines though.

Hey Zombie , haven't visited in awhile sorry about that :(. Seems like your keeping your self busy with the studies. Its great to see your doing those. The only things I see at the moment is you should try and push your contrast more, don't be afraid to get a little dark in your sketches. Just to note try and really learn from your studies and apply those to your own designs. Something I need to work on myself. Its also good your mixing up and doing your stuff and not just the studies, have to experiment with new stuff at some point, I would go insane with just the studies. :) keep it up, just keep focusing on your anatomy but really push it toward your own stuff, I think that way you might enjoy it more. Also it might not hurt to practice some still life studies, and setup a strong light source so you can work on your lighting and values. Happy drawing :)

Hey zombie, really like the head on the right side. very cool guy. :) Oh I figured you might like this site. http://basangpanaginip.blogspot.com/2006/01/downloads.html If you scroll down a little you will see a few art books you can download in pdf format. I found them pretty useful.

Hey, thanks for posting in my SB. It seems like you've gotten the anatomy pretty well conceptualized, but the step after learning the muscles is to learn how they interact and how they function in order to create realistic, believable figures.
Judging from your last posted figure: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=123240&stc=1&d=1176666172
I'm guessing you have an exaggerated anatomy book such as Hogarth's. Compare your figure to Dorian's from the forums: http://www.stylestation.ch/discussion/uploads/post-1-1143999485.jpg
There are some obvious differences, such as how much bulk each of the figures possesses, but you should still try to give yours a similar look. You can show muscles and anatomy and still make believable figures, simplify the skin some and try to pose the figure as if his whole body was working towards balancing the figure, give the pose function even if it is erratic. Try out drawing some gestures of poses, basic drawings with using as few lines as possible to try and capture the balance and rhythm of the figure without worrying about anatomy. Hope any of this helps, but remember the best thing is practice :).

Thanks Kvick for pointing that out. I've been studying faces mostly but I'll try some full body sketches and try to get a more natural look, It should be good practice. Really appreciate your help :)

Keep pushin'er man :D I'm seeing lots of nice variety in here too. Consider getting a mechanical pencil. Helps with cleaner lines (and I find that I have more control with shading if I hatch+go over it with a regular wood pencil after)

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook sooo here I am at yours! I'm impressed with the amount of studies you've done, especially the torso. Are you working from a book? The next obvious step forward would to start doing some life drawing! Which is very fun. I'll take you up on that suggestion to do more hand studies, I such at them too.
Yes, and crosshatching is a good technique to acquire. Remember to vary the length of your stokes according to and follow natural curves and lines with the hatches.

I see some nice figure studies in here, do you do any painting (traditional or digital)?
CouchPotato
June 27th, 2007, 01:34 PM
Heya Zombie! Hehe, well, seems like you at least know what's not right with your stuff :p
But it's not just the legs though. The torso as a whole seems a leeeeetle bit on the short side. And the forearms are short as well, probably because you drew the legs first and drew the arms in relation to that. Well, I don't know, that's usually how I draw anyway :p
Remember perspective! The leg in front cannot be the same size or smaller as the leg in the back! (Also, face! hehe, proportions on the face isn't quite right either, seems to me)
So, since you asked me to push you, I want MORE MORE MORE! Gimme two more figure drawings before the day is out, or you won't get milk with cookies for breakfast anymore! :p

Anyhow, tried to do a realy big guy. Would like to finnish him and draw his entire figure and maybe even work on some kind of background to make something complete for once :P Regretfully, I drew him in a corner of the paper and there wasn't enough space to draw more than this. Hey dude. The constant anatomy studies are neat. Do you go through stages? Some of your stuff looks a little stiff, but it's what I'm trying to work on too, loosening up my sketches. I tend to feel like Biro Pen (Ballpoint) is good for loose sketching. Keep 'em coming.

Hey Zombie, you know... as sick and twisted and cool as your creations are, I'd like for you to go out and buy a 'set' of pencils and use some darker tones in your drawings. I think it will help bring them off the page a little more and give them some depth as well. I see you started to use the darker lineart in the latest upload. Much better to look at!
Other than that, awesome work! Keep crankin em out!! You're stuff looks like a cross between Resident Evil and the 6th disc of Berserk (which totally depressed me btw).

Also, noticed something with your last page - you may want to work on eyes a little bit. They seem a bit...cartoony in comparison to the rest of the face in your drawings. :) I've had my troubles with 'em too. Tricky things they can be, especially when you're trying to draw quickly.

Hi :) Just dropped in to tell you that i admire your hard work and... give you some worthwhile tips(hopefully).
Im sure im not the first to tell you, but DRAW FROM LIFE! Daily or at least weekly set something up and draw it, or a picture or something. As long as you have the basis in your head its going to come naturally when you draw things from imagination. It helps tremendously. Try not to focus too much on style at this point, and get the anatomy and gestures flowing, and that line sharper.
Cheers and keep drawing :D
