Envisor - Thx for the comment. I'll try to make a step by step. Only problem is having to stop my flow to scan my drawing... I don't like doing that.
Delmar - thx
Bendragon - here's some quick lifedrawings that I posted before... They're all either 2min or 5 min poses. They were done as demos at Sheridan College when I was teaching lifedrawing there last year. They weren't meant for realism but more for the essence of the character and subtle exaggeration of certain elements.

lovely design, and process - while watching the video, besides pondering why you didn't have a backup (after being burnt again and again by hard drives I always backup, even my damned brushes), I wanted to try sketchbook again, but mostly try out the process later today in photshop; it might not happen, but probably, and it should.
Anyway serious ass pat time.

Incase anyone was wondering about the Toronto Subway Sketchgroup, it's still going on strong! But this Sunday Feb 18 will be the last one for about a month because Kei Acedera and I will be out of town.
Winter is definitely here. We're expecting high amounts of snow fall for the Toronto area today. I hope this will stop soon because we'll be travelling to NYC next week for the NYComicon.
Kei and I can't wait to go to California in March and get away from the freezing cold for a while.
Just a reminder to all those in my Digital Painting class tomorrow to keep your ears on your radios if it keeps snowing like it has last night. My Tuesday class was cancelled by Sheridan College due to weather and the same might happen on Thursday. As for anyone in my Tuesday class, there will be an additional class on March 13 (week 10) to make up for yesterday's class.
Here's a couple of bundled up Canadians from the subway last Sunday. And yes subway sketching is still on for this Sunday unless otherwise noted. I think it'd be a great day to sketch people. They'll all look extra funny with all the additional layers they'll be wearing.

Very inspirational work you have. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions...
I wanted to know how you think about the breakup of shapes. How do you organize your big, medium and small shapes in order to get a pleasing design... and... are you thinking about that while you're designing these wonderful characters?
What pointers can you offer for boiling down a character to their core... All of these characters you put down have this very magical way about their design.. I feel like if I walked up to this person... I could really have a good idea what they would be like from face value...
If there are any suggestions you can offer in terms of your design process for this I would be very much in debt to you.
I guess to kind of sum up what I'm trying to understand it's this... what are some techniques you go about for using shape to communicate the nature of your characters.
Again... marvelous work... thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you!

Hey Bobby, its been a minute since I have last looked at your works. I Finally saw something new from you, the First Line of Defense Piece, and was wondering if you have dropped off the face of the planet. It's great to see something new coming from you. I will try to make it my effort to visit your sketchbook a bit more often.XD

COol caricature,
Umm I have a question, dont people mind when you do their caricatures? EVen though they are funny I know some people who dont find them funny. I want to do carcatures too but this comesa lot in the way.
digi
April 4th, 2007, 07:32 AM
Beelow - Yeah... most of the stuff I've been doing can't be shown at this moment
bhanu - People generally don't mind but even if they do... we out number them :)
Here's a page of doodles I did a little while ago. Splashed some tones on there this morning and figured I'd post it. Usually if I have a hard time getting down to work, I'd start sketching mindlessly just to get the juices flowing. Sometimes these doodles go a little overboard and I spend more time then I should on them but hey as long as I had fun right?

Here's a piece I did for ImagineFX magazine about 6 months back. I wasn't allowed to show it until half a year after publication. I've done my time so I figured I'd post it now.
The piece is called "Big Bad Bunny Eater." Another humorous creature piece. I'm pleased to say that this painting will also be in Spectrum 14.
Hope you like it!

first of all, my english is not always the best... so be prepared!
I need to tell you something, kind of reach you and show you somehow what you did to me and still do!
4 or 5 month ago i found some of your videos, and watched one for fun and in that moment, by that click on you little video i just kind of, well it opened my eyes!
i always loved to paint, since I was like 5 or something i started doodeling arround and stuff... but 5 month ago i just realiced that its possible to reach that "level", to really improve... kind of screw my "talent" this is not what i will do the rest of my days, just doodeling some stuff and so on, i can improve! so i started practicing and bought a sketchbook and its allready filled up.
so all i wanted to say is, thanks alot dude! because of that day, that video you really showed me what way to go, its hard but at least I started kind of walking the right way... so thank you so much!
since that day i made some stuff, not good but well... im getting better... so it would be an honor if youd like to take a look! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1275017#post1275017)
its an shame that your subwaysketching is all the way down there... im living in germany right now, still in school... but thats somehow the reason why i am writing this, to reach you, and show you what you did to someone out there!
thanks again!
and now, after all that thanking (im sorry if its sounding well i dont know how, just dont know how to say it else)
and your work in general is so beautifull and inspiring, i love the style you achieved, the colors... its great. the sketches maybe touch me abit more.. i love it when you can really see the lines and how the picture has "grown"... when it isnt too finished up i mean.
regards jeppe rohde

So here's a bunch of new stuff...
a digital lifedrawing I sketched while teaching class in Sheridan. The great thing about digi lifedrawings are that you can peel away the layers to see all the steps! Everything is usually drawn according to importance so initially the face of the man was sketched in super quick just to get the direction of the face down and not necessarily the exact likeness of head.

Good idea. Just bookmark this ---> CLICK HERE FOR ALL MY YOUTUBE VIDEOS (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/youtube.html)
FlyingMilton - I got one in Toronto in a random book store and another sketchbook I got in an art store in Hollywood. They're sketchbooks made from recycled paper so it's great! Nice texture while saving the environment at the same time!
Slav - Thanks very much. I'm sad to hear that you aren't liking the classes at OCAD. You could always come subway sketching with us :)
bokuza - Yep, I did the cover for Sketchbook pro. It's a great program. Nice and simple but affective. The pic of the girl took about 3.5 hrs. It doesn't take long to get something done quickly. For the subway sketches I usually use a black col-erase pencil.
I'm heading off to Calgary Alberta tomorrow for the Calgary Expo on Sunday! This is my first time in Calgary and I'm one of the invited guest artist so I'm pretty excited.
Here's a pic I did for the back cover of the Calgary Expo Artbook. I think everyone that attends will receive one so come on by the Imaginism Booth #908, 909. I'll be happy to sign the back cover.

hei sir bobby
just wanted to say thank you for spending your time recording podcasts.
i havent had the chance to listen to the last one, but they really are inspirational and well worth the time so far.
the only thing that made me go "meh" was your point about moving.
i DO think that part of willing to live as an artist should also mean that you have to be able/willing to move if your not getting the right jobs in the current area.
if iam able to sacrifice sleep, friends and other hobbys.. moving should be no problem.
but then again.. homesickness was never a problem for me.
sry for the rant
your work for young artists is great i hope you never get frustrated by it.
thank you

artmessiah, whiteeeeeee, Doudou, Dolgopolov, Camara, kischi, Idiot Apathy, koala.one, matejkovacic, nethus, Wake101 - Thank you so much guys.
anymale - one question: where do you get the inspiration for the nice expressions in faces of your characters ? do you use references ? or do you have such a big libary in your head ? Just about always from my head. Once you figure out how the face moves then expressions get much easier.
_andreas_ - the only thing that made me go "meh" was your point about moving.
i DO think that part of willing to live as an artist should also mean that you have to be able/willing to move if your not getting the right jobs in the current area.
if iam able to sacrifice sleep, friends and other hobbys.. moving should be no problem. Thanks for the comment. What I was saying was that you shouldn't feel like you absolutely have to move if you really don't want to. Of course moving to a "more happening area" would be easier though.

Embrio - Yes actually come to think of it, I used to copy Mort Drucker's stuff all the time when I was a kid! Havent done it since but it still probably rubbed off on me.
VanDog - ty
GunTrouver - 1. the brushes I use are custom brushes that I make myself. 2. Layers... the way I use layers just depends on the situation. The important thing to learn is what do all the settings do? and how can I apply these settings in a practical manner?
regarded warrior - ty
ped454 - i use a sharpie usually. The 'marker' drawings you're talking about are actually digitally done in this case.
The Imaginism crew is going to Philly this weekend for the Wizard con, so come out if youre in the area!
I'm always interested in seeing people's initial sketches so I thought I'd post some of my own. Here's a page of unfinished lifedrawings I did last week.

I don't think there's a single sketch you've done that I haven't fallen in love with...
Also - I adore your take on Whaleboy... and I was already in love with the original/figure!
Fantastic.

Hi Everyone,
Kei and I are having our very first art show this Saturday June 30th, 7pm-10pm at the Labyrinth Store on Bloor St W just west of Spadina Avenue.
We'll be exhibiting a collection of sketches done in the subways of our beloved city of Toronto. These are original subway sketches taken straight out of our sketchbooks. You will also have the opportunity to purchase original sketches, prints and books as well as meet us in person and ask us questions.
It's going to be very exciting and fun for us so I hope you can come make it. We're also going to be premiering Imaginism Studios' 7th book - Subway Sketches. I hear the Globe and Mail (Canada's national newspaper) is going to be there as well.
Our Subway Sketches book is full of observational drawings, tips and tutorials as well as some killer guest artists!
Guest Artists
Louie del Carmen
Thierry Lafontaine <-- Thierry will also be there to sign books on Saturday
Jason Seiler
Stephen Silver
Dean Yeagle
The Subway Sketches book is a special limited edition out of the Imaginism collection. It's 72 full color pages, signed and numbered (limited to 500 copies).
All of the Subway Sketches books bought at the show or ordered online from now until the end of August will also come with an sketch from both Kei Acedera and I. You can order the new book HERE (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/store-book.html)

On another note, I was doing a thing for TOPPS trading cards - Hollywood Zombies collection a few months ago and now the cards are out so I figured I'd post my contribution...
It's Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson from the Wedding Crashers
Here's the original sketch

Oh man thats so cool, I wished I could come. A shame that I'm sitting here in Germany :(
But I wish you and Kei a well attended event and I hope you'll have a lot of fun.
Btw. Is it possible that Owen Wilson lost a little of his recognition factor in the colored version?
Cheers

I watched your youtube videos and the things you said really got me thinking even more about my art, my motivation, my goals, etc..
Cant thank you enough for that!
I really consider to take your next class on august 7, I'm just having some doubts because I actually have to save money for art college(art center).
I know your classes are for all levelskills but what if you cant put down some good lineart to paint in?
Should probably send you a mail with these questions;)
Anyway I like your style alot!

Hi Epias thanks for the comment. Drawing is a huge separate topic by itself. It also takes a while to learn. "Digital Painting Techniques" are very effective for any skill level and can be extremely easy to learn. Perhaps one day I'll have a class on drawing but I have my hands completely full at the moment.
Hi all,
Here's a new podcast just before my art show at the Labyrinth book store (http://www.thelabyrinthstore.com) in Toronto.

Hi all,
Here's a piece I did call "Big Foot 's New Friend" but now that I think about it... shouldn't it be called "Yeti 's New Friend"? It's just that I like the words - Big Foot. It just sounds funnier.
I did this initially as a demo for my digital painting class on SCHOOLISM (http://www.schoolism.com) (Shameless plug.. sorry about that) but after looking at it for a while I thought Big Foot looked lonely so I put in a little buddy for him.
Anyhow it's a painting about love and friendship :)
I also submitted this to Exotique 3 so wish me luck guys!
By the way, anyone interested in the August 7th Digital Painting Techniques class... there are 2 spots left.

Hi All,
It's that time of year again, where artists from all over travel from all over to go to the San Diego Comic Con.
For those that have never been there, this comic convention is so BIG that we just call it "Comic-Con."
It's sooo big that if you are standing in the middle of Comicon, you can't see any walls! Only the ceiling.
It's sooooo big that you NEED more then one day to see the whole convention.
It's sooooooo big that you'll probably get lost just wandering around the place. Not to worry though... all you need to do is remember one important letter and one important number.
A5 - We'll be happy to give you directions :)
Can't wait to see everyone again!
So where's everyone else sitting? Leave your info in the comments so we all know!
List of "must see"!!

Hi all.
Kei, T and I will be absent from subway sketching for the next 3 weekends. We will resume on Sept. 2nd. We're going to be in Chicago Aug 9-12 for the Wizard Convention. (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/conventions/chicago.cfm) Then it's TCAF in Toronto the weekend after and then it's the BIG Toronto con, the FAN EXPO. Can't wait for that one!! Sorry about this... but don't worry. Comicon season is coming to a halt end of this month.
These weren't from this Sunday's subway sketching. They were from today but we were on a bus at the "African Lion Safari" in Hamilton Ontario. We had a pretty fun time. I haven't been there for over 20 years...
Here's some sketches of a lion, baboons picking each others butts and other beautiful wildlife :)

Hi and thanks everyone for taking the time to comment! The recycled sketchbooks are from Woolfits at Queen and Dufferin in Toronto, Canada. I think the brand is called Earth Bound.
Here's a few more sketches. The yellow ones are from subway sketching and the rest were done on my recent trip to France. It's subtle but I think my sketches changed a bit during my time there.
Some people ask me why the yellow paper...
No reason. I found a stack of old yellow paper in a drawer and didn't want it to go to waste.
