There is no site that has _all_ his works, but I guess this is the closest thing to a portfolio of his on the web..
http://www.allenspiegelfinearts.com/hale.html
Theres also the mocking birds / Relexander website but that is seriously tiresome to navigate.

I have heard people talk about him so much but still don't think I've seen more than a few of his pieces, and I don't remember what they look like at all.

Yeah, Goad is worth buying, definitely.
And the second of Ashely Wood's 'Sparrow' series is all about Phil. Worth buying (http://www.amazon.com/Sparrow-Phil-Hale/dp/1600100406/sr=8-1/qid=1168295617/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-7753168-4310834?ie=UTF8&s=books). It's small, 6"x6"-ish, but does a good job of summing up his catalog. And it's cheap.
His relaxeder and mockingbirds books are both awesome, too, but they deal more with his drawing and fine art stuff. I think Budplant.com still has those.

I've tried collecting all his comic cover work, but have only a couple of the Swamp Thing covers and 2 of the covers he did for the series Flinch. And the weird war tales cover he did.

He's a sick mofo.

Yah, sparrow are neat little books to carry around too. I haven't seen the jon foster or phil hale one but the ashley wood is pretty damn good and worth the low price.

well it's not like you have to have the special edition hardcover. (although it would be great to have.) The paper back would do just fine and you it's 300 dollars less! haha. the reason why the limted edition cost so much is becuase it comes with an orginal drawing from the man himself..

I guess you could always bug you friends/parents/whomever to pay with a check and you can reimburse them.

you'll find a way, it's worth the effort. goodluck.

I doubt he would post on a online forum. From the couple of times I met him, I got that he isn't a computer kind of guy. He talks about it in an interview he did for Fantasy Art Masters vol. 2 book. Which is a good read I must add. He's deep man, real deep. Take a look at that god-forsaken website of his.

Is there any new work in the Sparrow book that wasn't in Goad or Mockingbirds/relaxeder?

I dont know if this is a issue with different titles in different countrys, but the book Ive seen in my library was called "Fantasy Art Masters" and has a dragon ot the cover... The book itself (according to my taste anyways) was not worth the money, the Phil Hale interview on the other hand, is one of the better texts I have read from an artist.. It explains certain aspects of the process that really make good sense to how one should think..

Personally I think Phil Hale is the most interesting contemporary artist for the time being anyways...
My Goad book should be in the mail any day now...
It's not the easyest book to find.. I found it with a decent price tag in a danish online store.

I love Phil Hale.

I have deleted my reference to Berry because it was asinine and I apologize. A good artist should not be villified for perceived minor faults. I hope everybody who has read this thread accepts my apologies.

Thanks,
kev

No worries Kev. We're all entitled to our opinion! I was just taken back by the comment. I remember you saying something similar in a post you made a while back. Thanks for being cool about it.

Berry has a new Sparrow book coming out soon with a bunch of new work. His website is need of an update terribly. He's sitting on too much new stuff.

One of the things that I have always liked about Phil Hale is that some of his pieces have a sort of "spotlight" lighting scheme. They almost look like stylized polaroid flash photography. That bit of realism makes even some of his more distorted figures totally believable. I've always wanted to see him illustrate "The Darktower" series.

Since you brought up Berry, here is an older original pencil piece of his that I have. I thought someone might like to see it.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s136/penumbra_photo/berrypiece.jpg

Also I know some people who own Phil H. originals. I will try to get some images of them. I believe this to be
educational and "fair use", so it should be ok.

I have some art collector friends and I had seen this piece pass through a few hands. It eventually landed with someone that owed me money so I jumped on it.

timpaatkins- Thanks for mentioning the series illos.I must have had that in my brain somewhere. Now I have to go look them up. I would love to see more Gunslinger work from him but thats probably not in the cards.
