okay, here are the steps for the "confront" sci-fi image.
it took me about three days to get something correct, and i continued adding small details later on.
the concept began as a very basic sketch on the wacom.

i think these 12 steps speak for themselves, i'll just add little comments later on, probably at the end of this same day.

i like how you start in shapes, not lines. also, the development from rough color-blocking-in to detailed painting is very interesting.

I found this to be utterly amazing. I must've studied it for 30 minutes without moving my eyes from my monitor. You're quite an amazing talent, my man.

It seems that all the great artists are using Painter around here. I really gotta get past it's initial frustrations. Your work inspires me to do exactly that.

Just quickly, how long did it take you to do this..I dont recall you saying in the thread and what resolution/size canvas do you normally start with in PS or Painter? Is there a minimum required to obtain the sort of detail you need?

TJ Verhagen: it's a pleasure. these things take a little bit of time to make, but it's always fun.

gekitsu : that's what i like in the wacom and drawing tablet, the ability to make sketch paintings very easily. if i had to do line sketches only, i probably would have done it the traditionnal way. tx m8

eggbeater: heh, glad you like it. well it's not painter, it's photoshop 5.5 :D
gonna wander into painter too, looks like i'm late already.

Manta_Ray: the original sketch can be done in 15 minutes. i usually make a sketch that i resize if i'm happy with it. but it depends.
i think this image was 30 centimeters wide, at 300 or 250 dpi. i sometimes work at 200, but it doesn't happen often.
i passed quite some time on this painting, i started on a friday, and finished the whole thing on sunday. i remember having passed all my sunday on it, from 9 am to 10 pm, non stop. once again it's very rare, i usually do not pass more than 6 or 8 hours on a painting. i should probably add more time. :s

Ok I am pretty new but not to green- I pulled up PS 5.5 and started with a new canvas at 30 cm by 30 cm at 250 dpi- which started me out on a 25mb file- is this the correct way to do it- and when I am finished trying to do create a picture as yours how much do you shrink it to bring all the detail in- thanks for the huge help- I love these tutorials- Brad

Really great piece! and the step by step pics are really transparent in showing your process. I Like the composition and how you have omitted lots of details to give the overall impression more strength. Really wanna see some more tutes like this one in the future!

Thanks Nick! Yes, he has some similar progressions. I guess I am a little greedy and just want more of these awsome progressions.

Craig Mullins(Spooge) had, a long time ago, a painter animation of each of his paint strokes. Unfortnately, I was completely new to the web at the time and didn't know how to save it and then he took it off his site. (BTW if anyone has this animation, I would really like to have a copy)

This is the closest thing I have found to it and just wanted more (and also this painting handles a few different issues in color and so forth).

It truly intrigues me how well you can use blues and reds so well together. I can't acually see the tutorial, but from what I have already seen, I think I get the jist of how you did it.
