Hi, my name is Swendly and I'm currently studying Game Design&Development in The Netherlands. I'm working hard to improve my skills in concept design. I also had an education in industrial design for two years. I sketch everyday for a couple of hours and I'm starting to believe that I'm addicted to art:).
I've been posting on the forums for about a week now and the comments I've got from you people really helped me improve a lot. Now I diceded to start a sketchbook so I can get even more constructive crits and share my art with the rest of you. Enough talking lets look at some art.
Crits are always welcome:)

nice starts, my fav are the first animal and human studies, very nice lines and dynamic shapes.Other figures are quite stiff.Try and work more on face anatomy and life drawing, i'm sure it could help.Keep this thread up, i wanna keep watching ;)

Thanks man I love doing those animal studies too. What exactly didn't you like (or could be better) about the faces? Most faces I draw are very stylized so some proportions are exaggerated. I started doing some gesture drawings lately to make my characters more dynamic overal. I'll update soon so keep watching:).

Been awhile since Ive been here. Great sudies and digitals you have going on. I love your last post, the painting looks really good, but you need to define the head a little more. I aslo love the pen piece. Very confident lines and great scenery, the tiger just looks awesome. Cant wait for more.

Thanks for stopping by man. Glad you like my new posts. The one with the tiger isn't a pen drawing I did it with a black faber castle pencil. I think it's like those prisma color pencils but for some reason they don't sell them here in the Netherlands.

It's been more than a half year since I last updated my sketchbook. Shame on me! I've been working very hard and made some serious progress during this last months. I have a lot of stuff to show and since I don't have time to sort everything out it will be a mix of older and newer stuff, the less crappy stuff being the newest of course. So let's start with some concept art I did for school projects and assignments. Most of them had to be done very quick so they're not completely finished:

More school stuff. The 3d model of the bar was done by Django den Boer. The character was also modelled. I'll have have to ask them for the final renders so I can post them.

March 3rd, 2008, 11:00 AM
Some older and recent studies:

And some recent character sketches to close off. I've tons of new things that I'm working on so stay tuned for more stuff.
Oh and comments and crits are highly aprecciated.

hey hey hey!
my favs so far are the greyscale profiles in post #21 and the anatomy studies in post #23.. they really capture the contre-posto of the bodies well!... line weight is much more controlled and less cartoony which I like. Keep it up!!! more more more!

thanks I have better control over my lines indeed. The problem that I had and still have a little bit is that I like to draw exaggerated curves so the thickness of let's say the arms and legs of my figures tend to get out of proportion, but I'm overcoming that right now. Come back for more soon because I have a whole sketchbook to scan.
Clochette
Glad you liked the assassin, but looking back I think I did a poor job on the anatomy, specially the abs. Actaully I didn't use any reference. I may redraw him some day. As for my anatomy studies, I'm putting a lot of work into my constructions building from simple volumes to more complex ones.

Well as I promised I started scanning my sketchbook. Sorry for the muddyness of some of the drawings but they were really light and I had to adjust the levels. I forgot to metion that I'm working as an illustrator on a collectable cardgame for Orionsbell since a couple of moths ago with a great art director and a huge team of artists. I can't show anything yet but have a look at the link in my signature for a preview. Enjoy!

Thanks. I really suck at colors. I need to practice with that more often. A lot of time goes into my line drawings because I really hate when my drawings look flat.
Talonzz
That sounds good. Maybe I should go have a look around there. Where I am right now they give very little attention to 2d art wich really dissapoints me considering all the courses on programming that we get. I'm having a hard time right now combining school with my own studies.

i like your ideas mang, they are really innovatively unique... pure! golden, and i RLY love the detailed work on the schematic woman sketches! ... good learned. :asspat: i want to see some of your gesture poses work, you have a good eye for making the character stable. good understanding of muscles and good job making the contact with the character and the ground even though they might not be standing or kneeling on anything., maybe add some patches of grass or stone brick, that would be nice, but then again, maybe i should do that. >.> hmm. anyways awesome stuff!

March 9th, 2008, 04:39 PM
Mister Lister
Thanks for the kind words. My eye for construction and balance is because of my industrial design background I think. As for muscles my anatomy needs A LOT of work before I can call them anything near good. I'm glad you like my ideas because I think the stuff out of my imagination really sucks. I have to draw more from observation to fill my head with new things. Here are a study from reference and some gestures from last year, some from posemaniacs and some from imagination.

Facial expressions are not that difficult once you realize that they are just mechanical principals. Just learn the muscles of the face and study wich are responsable for what expression. Good luck!

Dude, like i said, awesome stuff. I love your studies and your pencil handling is great. The only thing I've got to say that sometimes your figures need to loosen up a little. Just like in the seminar, you try to build things up a little bit too much with geometrical figures. But then again... awesome stuff. And yes, I'm gonna watch Vilppu! :)
fantasyartist
March 12th, 2008, 07:34 PM
Tom
Thanks for the crits. It all depends on what I'm doing. When I'm analyzing my subject I use simple forms to build it up. That way when I need to do a looser drawing I can remember the structure better and don't need to use many cunstruction lines. Sometimes I get to carried away with the construction indeed and my design suffers a little bit. That's why I'm doing a lot of gesture drawing lately.
fantasyartist
March 12th, 2008, 10:16 PM
Here's a main character I'm working on for a game at school. I still need some information from the game designer in order to finish this chick. First I did some studies from Vilppu's manual and the net to get more familiar with bird anatomy, then I proceded to the thumbnails and after that I combined 3 of them into the final design. Right now I'm working on the wings because those are going to be her main weapon.

thanks but I don't consider myself anywhere near a good digital artist. I can draw decently but painting is still my weakpoint. I have to work a lot on that. As for my wacom, I use a pretty small one, the wacom volito but I plan to buy a new one soon because it isn't that sensitive. I think the intuos is one of the best but I don't really know for sure. For me as long as I have some good basic skills it doesn't matter that much which tablet I'm using.

Here's some stuff to keep the pace up. Some hand and neck studies from hogarth and Kchen and a background painting for a submarine game I did last month at school. It was actually the first time I painted an environment from scratch in photoshop. Guess you don't know what you're capable of until you're forced to do it.

you were forced to do that? waw. my results would be nowhere near that good if I was just forced to do something.

I noticed that it's just about knowing what you want to achieve and coming with a good plan to achieve it. Here's where a good basic knowledge of composition, lighting etc. comes into play. The more you rely on luck and guessing the harder it becomes. At least for me. Are you refering to the wings of the chicken? That could be very cool but considering it has to be modeled and the time that we have I kept it as simple as possible.

Really cool environment you did there. I doubt my first all-digital environment would turn out that well. I like the colour choices you made for it, the blues make it feel very eerie and quiet. I would normally suggest adding fish or sealife, but I think little Nemo's swimming around would ruin the mood of this.
I'm gonna check out the rest of your SB now.

Glad you like it. I didn't add to much because it was a background and it shouldn't distract to much for the game. Also having fishes would make it look very static during the game since the fishes aren't moving.

yur indian dude is looking cool, it might make difference with color but his clothing tone is very close to his skin tone? just something i noticed, i also like those simplified anatomy studies any chance you can hint a bloke on a direction on where to find kchens stuff to study from? something i have found really useful lately is pecks anatomy book he explains the mechanics and architecture of the body in a really understandable way with bridge it seemed like there was allot of information left out like you where assumed to already know it anyway just a suggestion keep up the progress i hate to have to get better than you some day!!.

You're right about the skintone and the clothing the values are nearly the same that was my intention. The difference would be in the color stage as you said. I never checked out pecks anatomy so I'll have to flip trough that book when I have a chance. KChen's stuff is here on the forums as well as on characterdesign.com in the tutorials section. As for you getting better than me, you are taking life drawing classes right? That's already an advantage!

I finally had the chance to continue with the concepts of our chick game project, starting with the first enemy. The game is a fighting game set in a poultry factory in wich you (the chick) will have to fight your way to the office of the CEO. The first opponent is a fat guy who works at the sorting section of the factory. This was the description in the game design doc:
Fat guy
Sloppy dressed, looks dumb, blue jeans a dirty t-shirt and if possible a red cap. Run towards you and tries to trample you. He is actually really slow.
Look:
Height: 160cm.
Damage: see appendix 2
AI: see appendix 3
Speed: see appendix 4
Special weapon: belly
I started with a couple of thumbnails as usual. Then I picked one out and refined it. Since the models are going to be very low poly I kept my forms very simple. I don't think there will be time for turnarounds because I have A LOT of stuff to design in just a couple of days. And to close it of some dog anatomy studies I did yesterday. Comments are welcome as always.
aussiedeza
April 1st, 2008, 08:14 PM
Wow nice work you can see you put allot of effort into that. One question and i know he is a stylized character but where is his ass? and the dog heads are looking great, i want draw animals but i set myself a goal to learn humans first. do you draw in perspective guidelines for example eye sockets or do you just use points? just wondering. laterz
fantasyartist
April 2nd, 2008, 05:28 AM
Well he's got a very flat ass! I was thinking about adding it but such a subtle form would dissapear in the final model I think and it would take away from the overall gesture. I'll take his lack of ass into account if the final model looks weird. For the dog drawings I used points to get decent proportions and the rest was just going with the flow and the form and trying to feel the surface. My rendering really sucks I have to work more on that.

Wow, your anatomy studies are hugely inspiring! :D Indeed your pencils are amazing. The character concepts on this page are great fun as well, I like how you explore his design and make sublte nuances. I'll check back soon, your sb is such fun to look at :)
Hey, I noticed in this pic (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=335878&stc=1&d=1206890152) that we've used the same reference! The woman to the left, I drew her as well from characterdesigns.com (http://www.characterdesigns.com) Yours looks so much better :D Anyway, again, I'll check back soon, keep at it!

Thank for the kind words. The woman looks decent but I screwed up the proportions. I'll have to be more carefull with that the next time. Maybe block in the pose with straight lines first like in this old study from one of Anthony Ryder's paintings. It's been a long time since I used this approach to start a drawing.

It's been a while again since I posted. I'm overwhelmed by schoolwork and my freelance project, which is also a good thing because it gives me a lot of stuff to post. I bought a little sketchbook specially for drawing from observation and I set a goal for myself to fill one a month so I'll start with that. Sorry for the crappy scans but I was in a hurry.

These are concept sketches I made for an onrail shooter game project. I thought the concepts for the houses were really crappy until I saw the 3d models (by Django den Boer by the way). After finishing the props I did a qiuck sketch for the first level. He then used it as a guide for his 3d level layout. Then I did a quick paintover in photoshop to see if the colors I chose were working wel together. There's still a lot of work to be put into this project before it's finished.

These are more concepts for our chick game project. Mostly props for the first level of the game, the sorting section of the poultry factory. After the models were made I made a crappy setup in max to get an accurate scale using my thumbnail sketches as a guide and then I did a paintover in photoshop. The result is pretty decent and it's a pretty fast way to work when you are under tight deadlines so I'll have to use this approach more often. Enjoy and please leave your comments!

Hey dude, nice stuff you got going on here! I like how you don't limit yourself to only characters, for which I'm guilty for :-(. I like your life studies in trains, but you focus in my opinion on too much stuff that don't matter. Sometimes they're a bit hard to read. After school's over, we should get together and sketch! But keep 'em coming!
I've got an update on the way with lots of studies (again haha). Good luck with school.

Haven't seen you around for a while. I like designing environments and props to get away from all the anatomy stuff when I get too frustrated. Most of the time I discover weak points in my perspective knowledge which are responsible for making my figures look crappy. I hope to see you draw more tech stuff too. As for the train stuff, I'll keep that in mind next time.

It's been a while again. I've been very busy with my school projects and finishing my last card for the Oz collectable card game. The site has been updated so check out the link in my signature.
Now for the art. First ones are 3d models I did for the prototype of our chick game. It has been months since I last modeled something, so I messed up the geometry of the chick in the detailing stage a little bit, but it looked decent enough for the prototype. I ended up using aussiedeza's idea for the eyes, so thanks for the tip mate. The fat guy went way better except for the arms. The textures will probably get a second pass since they are still a little flat. It was really fun and I learned a lot doing these. I will defenitely model more of my concepts in the future. I also made a new render from the monkey island style canon I posted earlier because it was very dark. Then we have some hand and basic volumes studies, animal gestures, a vehicle concept and some pages from my new sketchbook. Enjoy and please leave your comments.

Thanks for dropping in my friend. I don't know why everyone seems to like that vehicle because I don't thinks it that great, but thanks for the compliments. As for drawing the tech stuff, it all comes down to drawing simple volumes, like the ones I posted above. Really put a lot of time into those. Then when drawing vehicles(or aircraft or anything) start with the big volumes and keep it simple. Doublecheck if the perspective and construction are working (something I wasn't carefull enough with on that vehicle) before you break down the big shapes in smaller ones. And of course make sure you have good reference pictures. I will drop in for sure to check those vehicles when you post them. As for the 3d models, I kept them simple because of time and what the game designer wanted. It can be frustrating to hold yourself back during projects, but we learned our lesson from being too ambitious with previous projects. Thanks for the tip anyway mate.

nice work on the study man, try and get some of those cast shadows edges harder and soften up the core shadows think contrast the softer you make say the fur on the trunk feel the the more hard the form on say the legs would feel with a sharp cast shadow, also try and bring in some more desaturated warm hues into the goat just before the form turns to shadow. hope that understandable and thanks for stopping by my sketchbook your advice is always helpful. keep rocking mate.

Ahhh i just read what i typed and can understand how i confused you by desaturated i meant more saturated then your current hues in the side facing the sun but still very unsaturated compared to the rest of the painting. ahh crap its hard to put into words.
This might help i found your reference. and although the shadows on the reference are quite warm i would probably make them cool for contrast reasons.Your study is more saturated at the highlight and the drops in saturation or Chroma towards the shadow side which is the reverse of what it should do in reality and it is also made up of all warm hues.
eek i hope i made a little bit of sense this time.

Nice one its great you finally got tablet now i expect shiploads of paintings!!!!.Great job on the Dag in your last pencil good gradiation of values pushing the posterior section further back,I love the blocky bridgeman figure above it too. your page of small sketches is exactly what i have to do myself i tend to go way too big, Something i would like see you do is the opposite of what you want me to do, try some loose sketching with the side of your pencil mate i think you might like it and be surprised with some of the results, all your sketches even thou they are studies feel very tight and need some life brought into them, just an idea as you probably prefer it tighter for modeling anyway later keep up effort as usual..
PS.. that chicken is nutz!!! heh you cant help but look back and forth between that chickens eyes and the guys eyes with physco music playing over in your head.

June 8th, 2008, 09:24 PM
Thanks man I'm glad you like them. I did do sketches with the side of the pencil in the past but I dropped that a while ago. Now I'm using a 2b pencil which is harder to get very dark tones with in comparison to the wax pencils I usually use. I think using the side would make that even harder. I just prefer a tighter shading over a soft one. I'll just have to start doing a lot of gesture drawings again to give more life to my drawigns and sketches. Thanks for pointing that out. I put a lot of effort into the interaction of the chick with the guy. My colors ended up a little muddy, but I still learned a lot doing this painting.

cool i would love to see you do some good old battle mech's with those perspective skills you got, i look into all those folds myself a while ago i and i will have to do it again but there something about the way Hogarth draw folds that just make its feel really fake, maybe try to take more of a plane approach rather then those strange cylindrical tubes curving around the form good too see more of you pencils your general head proportions could use some review too.
I see you have a similar problem as me when drawing cars, i cant get the depth/width of the car to look correct its around 3 wheels wide but its a matter of experience i guess when it comes too judging how much foreshortening to use depending on the perspective.. O and the heavy armored vehicle is killer really clean lines and 3 point perspective! someone was feeling like a challenge aye!?? you should pop it into photoshop and render the hell out of it =). keep up the work mate.laterz.

Thanks for the tips. The fold studies are from vilppu not from hogarth. I emphasized the cylinders to remind myself to see them as forms not as lines. Normally I prefer the planar approach too but vilppu's cylindrical approach looks very realistic so I decided to study that more. It will require a couple off passes to get it right so go give it a second pass.
As for the cars, they are 3 wheels wide if you look closer you can see the construction. Maybe they look crappy because I never actually study cars. Let's see what I can do with the vehicle in photoshop. Thanks for the crits friend!

Ahh i can see the construction now, my bad the degree looks good actually maybe its just the rest of the proportions that are off, theres some rules with cars that you just can't stuff around with too much or it wont be a car anymore. Real life stuff has been cutting into may valuable sketchbook browsing time.>:{
You sir are like me, a draftsman at heart. I think in terms of lines instead of color/values. I have a difficult time painting as well because it is the exact opposite of what I usually do.
I don't have a sketchbook because I don't have a scanner, I'm not very good with digital art, and i'm terribly intimidated. :/
The side profile is very nice, as is the nude. As you have already pointed out yourself, I would like to see some deepening of the values maybe. I think they could both benefit from some heaver shadows.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I will drop by in your sketchbooks and answer your questions soon. It has been a long time since I updated. There were some personal stuff going on this last months that kept me really busy, but that doesn't mean I haven't been drawing. I'm too lazy to scan right now so let's start with some older stuff that I didn't show yet.
First images are from a concept art seminar at the beginning of this year. The final assignment was to create a character or scene based on the theme "political refugee". After coming up with a short story for what we were creating we made A LOT of thumbnails. The ones posted here were done digitally on the last day before moving to the final sketch. I didn't manage to finish the final concept, but I sure did learn a lot.
Last two are illustrations I did for the oz collectible card game from Orionsbell last year. Lots of things I would do completely different right now, but you have to start somewhere right? More info about the game can be found here:

Now crit the hell out of my work. I will be posting more stuff soon.

Thanks for the advice. I've been giving people the exact same advice lately. The things is when I get a very tight construction the head lose character and vice versa. Hopefully I can find the correct balance later on.

Hey! you talk spanish? ˇBueno! Txs for stop by..:teeth:
Now I got a little more time to give my opinion. Of your fist works, "furion" and "swordsman" are great. You got really cool ideas for characters, they look strongly done. There are some failures of anatomy, but they are minimal. There is an enormous change from your first posts to the last ones, it shows that you have been working hard. I will be looking over here.

I realized that I didn't do any imagination stuff for quite some time. So I decided to do a redesign of the assassin I posted earlier in this thread. It was
hard to think of the anatomy in terms of light and dark masses instead of lines which I'm more comfortable with. It also reminded me that I need to start doing anatomy studies again, specially the back! There's still a lot to be done, but here it is. Crits please!

Lovely pencil work! Dig your faces! on the assasin guy, the arm that is further back looks very funky, almos like it facing the wrong way, I think what is happening is that the lighter values are pushing it in front of the back, it should maybe be darker to fit in with the shadow of the back.

I love your pencils and I envy your perspective skills! You've really made a ton of progress over this sketchbook (almost two years).
In the assassin pic, the right arm is still fighting for the foreground when I look at it...I don't know if there's a little bit of an anatomy issue along with the tonal problems. It looks like the shoulder might be a bit low. Something happens between progress pics 4 and 5 in post #197 that makes it look odd. I like the shoulder more in pic #4, before you lower and emphasize the deltoid. Still, great WIP!
Keep up the awesome! :D

That last one is looking better, almost there, but i think one more last push will make it even better!! My suggestion would be to tighten up the anatomy just a bit more, and try to avoid using straight black for your shadows on the figure especially. It can flatten the picture out too much, also some more work on the legs and youve got a very nice painting here, ... that just needs color, ha ha , you can do it.
By the way, I did some work for the Oz card game too.

wow, your style is pretty close to that of one of my friends. Your stuff looks pretty solid. The anatomy is a little wonky in some parts, but that can be attributed to style. wish my studies were so clean, clear and good lookin.
I really really like anatomy studies and characters. If you wanna improve your looseness and overall "swooshiness" in lines, just try and study that aspect, as you study the rest! just pick some really good loose artist and study, copy, try and have fun following the flow of the lines.Disney people or some good comic artists will do.Check out claire wendling, she's really really good at that.

Thanks for passing by and for the motivation mah friend. That character was actually the 3rd attempt. I still see place for a lot of improvement. The face lacks character and the legs aren't looking right for my taste so I'll probably do another version.

Thanks mate! I still struggle a lot with construction, specially when drawing heads. Just keep practicing!

Thanks for the tip! Too much cleanness can end up looking stiff sometimes. When I draw too loose I tend to mess up my proportions. So I guess you just have to find the balance in between.
This is a portrait/study I did for a friend after a photo he gave me. Scanning it really messed up the values. And then playing around with the levels to get rid of some smudge messed it up even more. Anyway I hope you like it.

looking really good man!
you've been busy with some intersting work, working on animation looks like a blast!
i really like that last character you posted, very good pencils and has definately lost a lot of stiffness.I'd make sure i work with contrast even more, see how "explicit" that thing he's got on his forehad is, just cause its a bit darker.Putting that kind of contrast with patterns coulp puh it even further imho.
When working on characters like this one or the knight i'd really check out some good reference for the pose, cause imho it makes half of the personality or a sketch.Pose yourself, look out how other artist handled it, look for ref.
Really good job :)

Thanks for dropping by bro! I need to check out reference more often indeed. However for that last character I did walk around the room trying to get the right feeling for his pose. Here's some more stuff for my school project. It's going to be a 2d exploration game for the iphone. I did various experiments trying to decide on the narrative and the feeling of the world along with the game designers and then I started to work on the main character. Just looking through your sketchbook here Swendly.. wow! You are growing fast my friend. Those studies are awesome, make me feel guilty that I don't do them any more. I should!
It's great to do studies, and then not leave it at that but apply the knowledge to an imaginative creation. This forces you to think and not just copy. Your doing great on that one, you can really tell the difference.
One pointer I might give: don't get caught up in color. I would even say it's a bit to early to start with it. Focus on Black and white, get your values correct.
I understand that sometimes, for school for example, you have to use color.
Then try this to start:
-First get the values correct in Black and White.
-Than use one color, that is one Hue. Try an orange.
-And the only thing that you change is the saturation.
Look at old masters how they mastered the art of saturation. Copy a work of an old master into photoshop, put a orange layer over it and set the layer to HUE. Now see how little color difference has to do with anything. It's all in the values and saturation.
I'm trying to find an old document I once made with a lot of things Craig Mullins said when he used to be over at the Sijun forums. Great stuff to study. I'll post it here when I find it!
Anyhow, say hi to the rest of the class and HKU for me and keep going!

Thanks for the feedback and specially the link friend! I've got a lot of questions but no one to turn to for answers so I have to figure things out by trial and error. You're right about the color thing. The school stuff is forcing me to use color when I know I haven't mastered values yet. I'll try the method you told me and see what will come out.
