January 3rd, 2007, 06:09 AM
Welcome to the Stylized Animal Monthly Challenge, sponsored by Zoo Publishing Magazines and 3DTotal. Please post all images @ questions in this thread.

What is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select an animal and post some images as reference. All you have to do is create a 2D Painting of this creature in a stylized/abstact/cartoon style whilst keeping your creature instantly recongnizable. We wanted to publish some content in 2DArtist Magazine on how to create stylized animals such as you see in the many feature films and cartoon galleries. We thought this regular competition might bring in just the images/making ofs we need whilst giving away great prizes and exposure. If it's a success we will start to boost the prizes up as much as possible!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humourous entries which break the animal down to its most recognizable components, enphasize these in whichever ways you think best and render your stylized/abstact/cartoon masterpiece.

Timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back, please submit 1 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background, include some graphical elements or text on your image its up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). There will be 1 comp per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the main competition thread before this time.

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'making of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com), these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text, of why and how you did what you did. We will format this into some nice looking pages to give you some great exposure and us some quality content.

Posting Works in Progress?
Each competition will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs give feedback and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month. Please dont start any new threads! Just reply to this one already set up.

Here we go with this months challenge which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 2DArtist Magazine.

This month we have gone underwater (we have been watching a lot of Blue Planet recently...) 'Octopus' of the Cephalopod Family.... Octopus's only though please ;-)

http://www.2dartistmag.com/challenge_resources/issue013_jan07/main_small.jpg

Here are a selection of Images from eyes to tentacles to give you some good references. The octopus is quite a commonly stylised creature so there will be a lot of thought needed for this one. Keep up the good work!

Octopus 1 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2062426_octopus.php?id=2062426) Octopus 2 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/210840_caribbean_octopus.php?id=210840) Octopus 3 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2585237_eight_armed_friend.php?id=2585237) Octopus 04 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/underwater_scenics/403566_day_octopus.php?id=403566) Octopus 5 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2585237_eight_armed_friend.php?id=2585237) Octopus 6 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/life/nature/animals/418807_jetting_octopus.php?id=418807) Octopus 7 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/what/life/nature/384457_octopus.php?id=384457) Octopus 8 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/ethnic_foods/asian_food/japanese_food/1370684_octopus.php?id=1370684) Octopus 9 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/food_and_beverages/food/cooking/1978945_octopus.php?id=1978945) Octopus 10 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/underwater_scenics/1078998_octopus_eye.php?id=1078998) Octopus 11 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/1292904_octopus_tentacle.php?id=1292904)

Dont start new threads, lets try this with 1 main thread only, so all design sketches, WIP's, feedback, Questions and Final Images to go in this thread only.

Have fun!

ArcticBarbecue - hey thanks. just having some fun. :)
jake - absolutely beautiful. but if that`s a blob of ink down there, I think you confused octopus with squid.... ;)
Kawakaze - great linework, man. good flow. I love it. though I think your creature itself is more squid looking than octopus.

great work anyways, everyone. :)

Wow, very good entries this time!
Chuck, mate: Very good mix of graphical elements and stilization. I like the colors:)
jake:Looks very cool, like from a childrensbook. The ink thing was already mentioned...;)
Kawakaze: Cool style, very Urban. IMO you should erase this grey blurry frame, looks cool enough without it:)

Good luck for everyone, here's mine:

Here are some of the ideas I'm flirting with.

To Chuckmate liked the entry alot. Liked the expression your octo has he looks snewdy and rich. sp chk

To Jake i made the same mistake didnt realize the diff between octs and squids. i liked how the eyes are within the skull and the movement on some of the tentacles.

To KawaKaze yours looks the meanest of the bunch and I agree with what was said earlier about the shadows but bg later should take them out of the picture thou

To Guntrover looks like your oct is some sort of irish man or leprehcaun or quaker (sp chk) Has tons of character in the eyes.

To Voraz think like a child and hopefully the cartoonish factors will surface.

To Squidittish cant wait to see it.

NOoooo!!! not shaoshao!!! I'm such the fan. Great wips. But be careful not to over render the thing, think more cartoonish.
Good work all....... got to go

P.S. ArcticBarbeque the two image links Octupus 3 and Octopus 5 are the same. Maybe fix it. Sorry if i sound nicpicky, but if I had something on my face I'd want you to tell me.

This is final unless stated otherwise. IT is a wallet texture octopus.

Good looking stuff so far. I do think that there might be a tad bit of confusion between octopii and squids, though. Otherwise, technically (and stylisticly), they are all great :)

I'll have mine in in a day or so. Sick and busy.

This is really catching drift now. Great to see so many entries. Kawakeze; I feel your colors are a bit to flashy, my eyes get a bit "tired" from looking at it. Thought i just should mention that.
Im finishing up mine now, the usual watercolor splatters from me though.

Finished my painting. Inspiration is from a childrens book were some mice put flowers in intricate patters to transform one mouse to a tiger mouse.

So all hail the divine octopus.

Breasts are a universal language, I say let it slide...:P

But, now I took the train of thought to Gutterville. population: 1. The thought of octo-boobs lead me to wonder how octopi mate. I dont have an answer yet, but the picture in my head aint pretty. New Mission: Shake that image before I go to bed.

FINAL ENTRY

Sort of going with a children's book feel on this. With a titch of inspiration from Eric Carle's stuff, in composition. Although I diverged quite a bit in the process. And then it ended up being a riff on The Beatles' Octopus' Garden in the Shade. Quite by accident :)

Oooooo I want in! I'm glad I found this, the exposure would be great and I wouldn't mind having a 2D Artist subscription. Competition looks real tough. Just one clarification, I see some people saying that some of these aren't "stylized." Does stylized mean graphic and cartoony? Or can it be like Redehlert and Helltaxi posted?

Fuish
January 17th, 2007, 10:51 PM
I'm not certain, but I thought it meant graphic, I don't think mines too cartoony though... ^^;

ArcticBarbecue
January 23rd, 2007, 05:20 AM
Also guys, I would say, go easy on the text on images. There really isnt any need for text as the competition is all about the animal characters them selves and should not need expanation through text. By all means give the image / character a title but try and avoid captions if possible.

JL.Alfaro
January 25th, 2007, 03:11 PM

Thanks man, I thought about doing that, but then I have to consider the legs too..right?...let me go edit this see what happens...

redehlert
January 25th, 2007, 05:46 PM
Actually, no....since an octo has 8 arms, not to be mistaken with tentacles. So, that said, you can have 8 arms (6 octo, 2 human) and a 2 legs. Ya dig?
I think it'd work just fine.
Cheers,

JLAlfaro, would this be concidered a stylized animal? Isnt this supposed to be a animal challange, and not a character one. It would be nice to get the rules clearified. Some of the entries looks a bit to humanoid for a stylized animal challange.

JL.Alfaro
January 26th, 2007, 10:36 AM
Didn't think so, but it did start out as an octopus, it just turned into this...thing. either way, I'm throwing it in there, if it gets disqualified, so be it. Maybe by next time I'll actually accomplish drawing something more...mmm..how yousay... stylized.
