And there, I shall greet them in the ever bleeding field's which then I lift my arm and point the way to the Elysian Fields where no loved one is to cry.

The rider of the second horse is generally held to represent War. The red color of his horse represents blood spilled on the battlefield. He carries a great sword, which represents battle and fighting. The Red Horse is also said to represent the Planet Mars. It is red because it is rich in iron oxide, more so than the Earth. According to astrological beliefs, Mars has quite an ill effect on the Earth when its position is behind us to the Sun, especially when the Moon, The Pale Horse, is between Mars and the Earth. The red planet also represents the God of War in many pre-Christian religions.

Eager to keep up with the times, Pestilence has retired his sickly old horse in favor of a creature better suited for a modern-day epidemic. Better hope those flu shots work...

This was, in my opinion, the best round yet - with 30 finished entries this is by far the largest turnout we've had in one challenge, and definately some of the best pieces we've seen yet. Good job to everyone who entered, and be sure to post comments here. Challenge #23 will be up soon, and judging by some comments in this round's thread, I think a pencil-only challenge is in order.
