▌You may hear me speak about God, Jesus, or of working in the church in some of my posts. I believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose again for my sins. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to PM me.
If you do not believe in these things, I have no right to judge you. God loves you no matter what you've done. I believe what the Bible says, that we are all equal sinners in His eyes. Draw, draw, draw and be merry!

A good art exercise:

put you hands together, palm to palm. place them directly in the center of your chest, with your back straight (prayer position). then touch your index fingers to the center of your chest and push your elbows out, moving your wrists out and away from your body. you should feel a burning tension in your wrist tendons. once that kicks in, hold it for 25 seconds. it forces blood through and stretches your tendons out. do that at least once an hour and it makes a huge difference.

▌▌INSPIRATION
Quote from the book Drawn To Life (http://www.amazon.com/Drawn-Life-Classes-Stanchfield-Lectures/dp/0240810961) by Walt Stanchfield:
Don’t be afraid to sketch in public places such as museums, parks restaurants, ect. And don’t let wind, rain, cold or heat deter you – those conditions sometimes yield the best sketching. Let someone else drive while traveling so you can draw. Capturing a scene while moving at high speed will sharpen your eye. But also take time to do a more detailed sketch. First draw a rectangle and work within that to force yourself to make a composition – relating one thing to another and to the borders. If you feel a need for toning the sketches, use cross hatch or carry a couple of gray felt tip pens. Get in the habit of using a pen. It is much more direct and does not rub off like a soft pencil. Sketch at home too. Never sit in front of the TV without a sketchpad on your lap. Sketch faces, figures, and stage settings. If your dog or cat is lying on the floor nearby, sketch them. Sports events are especially fun to sketch – boxing matches, football games, etc.
You may shun landscapes – saying that you are interested only in figures or cartoons, but trees, mountains, rivers, and clouds have gestures that can be beneficial for analyzing action. Mountains stand erect, lean, lie down, sprawl, and spill out onto valleys in alluvial forms. Trees loom, twist in agonized or humorous gestures; they stand erect, stretch, and lean; some are tired, some perky; some bear fruit or flower, which in itself is a gesture. Even the atmosphere of a landscape has a (spatial) gesture.
Vehicles have gestures of their own. Some cars seem to slink along, some move proudly. Some are raised way up on springs – like they’re holding up their skirts so they can cross a stream...
That great teacher and the great guy, T. Hee, told his students to be like a sponge – soak up all the knowledge and information you can. Never allow yourself to get into a self-satisfied or complacent state. He advised never to drive home from work by the same streets twice. Take alternate routes – observe the new houses, trees gardens, etc., and do not just drive by them – look at them, see them.
Whether your heart is set on the fine arts or on animation, quick sketching is the shortest route to training yourself for capturing those spontaneous gestures and poses that are so essential to good drawing. Break on of your bad habits today. Which one? The habit of not sketching...
Also relative to drawing is the sharpening of your sense of dramatics and humor and of science and psychology. What are your reading habits? If they are narrow and limited, make a determined effort to expand them. Read a book on acting. Read a mystery; read a book on the life of Pissarro. Have a few books of The New Yorker cartoons in your library. Read Van Gogh’s Dear Theo. Read a few self-improvement books. Call 244-2816 once in a while.
Listen to some jazz, some symphony, a string quintet, and some country music. Stop everything and just listen. There are some delightful Irish and Scottish recordings. Feel the leaves of a sycamore tree, a wad of cotton, a piece of sandpaper. Pick up a stone from the beach or from the mountains and fondle it. See if it has a message for you. Notice its color and texture – imagine doing a n abstract painting of it, or actually do it. Sharpen your senses in all ways. Life will open up its vistas of adventure and courage and venturesomeness. Then when you make a sketch you will feel and authoritative confidence flow into it. It will have the rhythms of the music you have heard, the drama of the books you have read, and the tactile influence of all the things you have touched.
Sounds like a dream? No way! You have been given all these things, these possibilities, and for the small price of a few new habits…. who knows?
Reply from Sammy (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96149&page=12):
If your goal is entertainment then there could be no substitute for developing your own sense of design. And this will be mostly up to you, since there is no definition of design ... it's more of a muscle you try to keep bulking with your own thought experiments, theories, writing, brainstorming, meditation, whatever to remain as genuinely inspired as you possibly can.
The bad news is that you have to have a library of stupid material junk at some points in your life..... don't ask, It's just something I've noticed among inspiring folks. A library, not only as in literature but any damn thing the humans can create with their minds or find with their hands. books, movies, games, art, music, science, history, mythology... a person can always strive to be a little more cultured, and all they have to do is follow their passions. We live in a time when you can youtube college lectures from your favorite dead scientists, or listen to a director give away all his/her secrets for two hours in some dvd commentary.
Any artist alive stands on the shoulders of giants all the way back to paintings on cave walls. Biology that creates something from nothing, this gets curiouser curiouser - what exactly do you do with that torch?
Keep the memory of the masters alive, they started this mess
The good news is that it's actually really easy to demonstrate a sense of design in a portfolio. Yea it's vital to have some epic 80 hour polished illustration, but teams also want to see a sense of methodology. Showing the reasons you created the universes you did, that function the way they do. The sketches on the side, the orthographics, the 5 design overlays, the animation keyframes, thumbnails, reference style sheets, anything you can do to give insight into what catalysts you use to come up with the designs you do.
Inspiration from Brad Rigney's (Cryptcrawler (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=137632)) mind and sketchbook:

Observation, practice and a willingness to abandon myself to improving.
This is all about time, all about practice and all about being teachable.
You can train yourself to see your work for what it is instead of what you think it looks like, but its not easy and doesnt happen overnight.
It also is something you have to practice on a daily basis and something you very well may not fully master.
I certainly havent but im willing to hurt and try everyday.
Before I (thankfully) became utterly swamped with contract work I did a lot of life-drawing and copying movie-stills for practice. On a low end week I draw 40 hours. On a normal week I draw 65 hours and on a crunch deadline ill work 85+ hours a week.
It boils down to being in love with this and looking for excuses to do it whenever possible instead of making excuses not to.
If you can do that and have 5% talent youll make it, I guarentee you.
But make sure you have a realistic idea of what "making it" means.
Currently im earning sub-poverty level income, but its getting better.
For me "making it" means delivering my absolute best within the timetable ive been given, reguardless of who the client is and for how much.
If I end up being worth a shit then the money will come, im not worried about that.
The art is what matters most.
I wish you all the very best in this, send me a note if you need to, it can get lonely and tough sometimes doing this when your broke, not eating a lot and socializing even less to get better.
Stay on it, you can do it.

January 2nd, 2007, 02:39 AM
hey matt, batman is good.
WHen using pencil, your hatching seems a little too "choppy" to me. Generally its wise to use both soft rendering(going over, and over with a pencil), and hatching. Often the values arent realied enough with hatching, because the concern is with the form.
I respect your targets quote, Jp is one helluvan artist:)

January 2nd, 2007, 05:32 AM
well I hate jim lees work , its so boring , but I dont mind the short ears, it depends on the artist I guess . I really loved that old sienkiewicz batman . yours is looking cool too man. both of them . you gonna spend more time on them?

bhanu: i dunno if i'm going to spend more time on them. hehe, maybe. sienkiewicz batman? never seen it. thanks for checkin up on me. ;] ohh... and you just bashed my favorite comic artist of all time, besides Humberto Ramos. i'm gonna have to do something about that! haha, cheers!

oh sorry mate, didnt mean to offend you. But I guess its personal preference. I dont hate Jim lee. I was a fan of him . ANd I still think his knowledge of anatomy and sequential work is top notch. But there are just so many clones out there that every book I pick up looks like a jim lee. rip off. and soemhow I end up getting bored by it. wierd reason but Its true for me. I loved his work on batman hush . his best work by far. you should check out sienkiewicz bat man. Its really good. Its where he started experimenting with his style.
getting back to teh update. Its looks loose and nice(the last one). I like . birdy is too loose I guess. too blurry. Is it intentional? The other one looks blurry by intention. No It would be great if one of these updates are finished and tweaked.
Ncie work man. Its good to come here.

bhanu: yes, it can get boring to see the same artistic style being copied all the time. but that is why i love Jim Lee's stuff so much. he changes it little by little in each series he does. yes the Hush series was great. it's what made me a fan on Lee's work. that Sienkiewicz's Batman is really sweet too! thanks for stopping by... you will find no offence here. and i hope i inspire when you do come here. draw draw draw!
Tom Tom: i didn't think you would care much for my new sb. ha! thanks for the support and yes, Studio 2nd Street here we come!

Word man, I'm totally out of the loop on digital stuff, I haven't heard the difference between the intuos 2 and 3. Well, whatever it is, it suits you, the ninja rocks. Love it when ya keep the shapes simple and let the areas of detail shine through. Like on the Angela piece, too. Also on Frank the bird.
Rock that new tablet!

Hey. It's great to see you're trying out the masters.. Theres alot you can learn from them. You're master study is comming along. Watch out on your angles and prespective of the body and face. Your eyes are a little droopy. In the masters she is really alive and full of interest her meek smile really shins through on her try to think like your the master painting the girl get inside it. Her necks a littler long tilt her head to the side a bit and down and angle out the body a little more and it shall start looking prime...
Cheers Seth

OK ok... UPDATE... and remember to draw every second you have got. Don't let up, draw draw draw and when you think you are done, DRAW SOMMORE! And when something inspires you, don't let go of it. Keep ahold of it and let it grasp your fantasies and life, then draw from that pure motivation.

wow... that last one has nice colors. Good to see you working on that as well. Is it from live? ref? imagination? Anyway the very simple composition is nice as well. It reminds me of limbolo and I'm not sure if you know him but I'm sure you will like him:
http://www.limbolo.blogspot.com/
I like that mgs piece as well. Reminds me of Rembrandt. Only faces are lit... But take care: your backround has more contrast than the cloth. I think I know why you did that but I'm not sure if it works... Also: don't be afraid to paint eyes. Hiding them in black shadows is easy but not always the best method.

Don-key: Hello! No problem, maybe later you can critique some of my stuff - nice to see you here. ;]
Tobi: You are correct with those critiques. The background sucks... I did it late in the night trying to finish it before the CHOW deadline. And as for the eyes, I was using the Metal Gear Solid 3 manual's images. In there the main artist for MGS sketches the characters with little detail as possible. That was what I was trying to achieve. As for the enviro, I did use reference from a photograph. I do like limbolo, never heard of him before you pointed him out to me. Now he has a new fan. ;] Cheers, Tobi, great to see you're critiquing again! Hehe
Razorb: Thanks! ;] I hate doing images in one day for a deadline, but you gotta do what you gots'ta do. Thanks for coming in to my humble establishment.
I reviewed a lot of my art from before, and well, it sucks. So now I am striving to make everything I do 101% better than what I did in the past. I hope I can do it. Maybe with your guy's help! ;]
Goro Fujita's speedpaint tutorial helped me learn how to do speedpaints! His tutorial (http://www.area-56.de/chapter56/2006/11/speedpainting.html) is awesome and motivates me to get better. Maybe by my 30th speedpaint I will eventually start to grasp what I cannot attain through reading. These environments were done by blurring my eyes and within 30 minutes each. Also I attained the images from Pbase.ca (http://www.pbase.ca/) where the images are watermarked, though still usable for reference work. Draw and do SPEEDPAINTS EVERYONE! Cheers. ;]
Experience makes perfect.

Some geese are punks. Yours however, are not. Keep pumping the speed paints, and don't worry about the time TOO much. That can tend to limit the quality of the painting because of unnecessary pressure. We'll have to chitchat about 2nd street soon. Cheers man!

the high opacity speedpaints from #81 are great. Every brushstroke has a meaning and your planes are free and simple. The second batch from #83 is not that good. I see you going back to low opacity / soft edges again, which is not a bad idea.
I'm sure you find a way to combine both. Clean shapes and the precision of low opacity brushes.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=97532&stc=1&d=1172165660 suffers from the grey underpainting. Its never a good idea to have a grey underpainting. Easy workaround: once you are finished with greyscale make a new adjumentlayer set to "gradientmap" and blending mode to "color". Values won't be harmed and you can get quite interesting basecolours with gradientmap. Works great as underpainting.

Great work on the show poster, awesome patterns. The patterns in the background are lookin pro as a mofo. As far as the blood, I think a lot of times less can be more. And I think the punk elephant thing (punkephant? elepunk? elepunkuhphant?) could use some ears to make it read easier. Very cool poster anyway.
Keep blazing on the enviros, they're lookin great, especially these last B&W ones.

Soo.. You seem to be on a good way. What happened to drawing though? All I see is digital work. No scanner, camera? Or did you just give up drawing? ;P
Also you might want to try out other brushes. Your digital work alllwaayy screams Photoshop.. Or a photoshop-like-brush-in-painter :D But really for example you could try out "ArtRage" Im sure youve heard of it. Right now things tend to look slighty flat- if you know what i mean..

Tom: Thanks for stopping by on your huge schedule. :[]
krakel: SCREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM Photoshop. Yeah, I'm not trying to scream anything else but digital. That's why I use paper and a pencil to make traditional art. Digital is digi and pencil is pencil. ;] I do understand what you mean, and I will try to work on polishing off more of my images. Just no time! AH! And I did not give up on drawing. Heck no, it is a big part of my art (probably 90%). The digital is experimentation towards getting better at rendering. Thanks for the support! Cheers.

like your new doodles... I want my doodles to look like that.
a good excercise: try to draw with less lines...
Makes you faster, your drawings could look better and there are some tricks you can try out that way. For example leaving a part of the drawing empty so there is room for fantasy. Sometimes this is called the "lost line" technique (scott robertson calls it that way in "the skillful huntsman").
Kinda hard to describe... play around with it, see if it works for you and if not, just ignore me...

Tobi: I want that book, "The Skillful Huntsman"! Is it good? I heard it was. Thank you for the tips. I will put them into action as soon as possible. And yes, I kind of sketch too much to hide the fact that I'm a terrible artist. You could doodle like that any day! Just doodle all the time! :]
chrishly: Thank you very much and thanks for dropping by! ;]
Here are some sketches from my 2nd black book I call "Chinko". I wish I knew how to paint in it then there would be colors too. But I guess I'm too scared of painting. I DON'T KNOW WHY!
I also go to the library and get their many books of animals, guns, and clothing to sketch. It's so fun to do on my lunch break that I do it ALL the time! ;] AND I go to our cool movie/music/book store that has a Frank Frazetta art book that I love to sketch. One of these is the "Death Dealer", one of Frazetta's many characters. Someday I want to create characters like that. ;]

Zaknafain
March 9th, 2007, 05:14 PM
hmm crits about your paintprocess... never done that before but I think its a good idea to do this now:
in your vid, have a look at what you are doing for the first minute:
drawing lines and then filling them with value with an incredibly small brush.
Why so careful? you are at the very begining of your painting, take a big brush and just lay the shape down with ONE stroke. You will change it later on anyways. Its not only faster, working with a big brush in the beginning gives you the possibility to play with shapes really fast.
Another problem is that you blocked the backroundshape with a darker value than the foreground shape. why? it should be the other way around.
I also think that you are thinking to positive: (now that sounds odd) Why always painting the rocks? paint the sky and whats left are the rocks. Sometimes this works better than the otherway around. Though most of the time I combine both techniques and add paint on some places, take it away again elswhere.
Think about it like this: if you want to paint a black triangle with a round brush you have to possibilities: either the way you painted those rocks, or by painting a big black blob and cutting into it 3 times with white. Believe me, the last method is faster and looks better (clean).

Personitly I don't like it and think you could of done a way better job. It's to confusing I can't tell if it a she or he or even where the clothes end or begin it's the first 15 minutes that count if you dont have the pose and fondation down your not going go any where with it. It's not the time you took to do it but the knowledge behind the drawing that makes it work you can't paint with out knowing how light and color works well you can but not as good as you would with that knowledge of it and anatomy, form, prespective i would go back to your basics and life drawing and draw draw draw.

I don't like a-p-r-i-l f-o-o-l-s. That's it. No lecture, no ranting, no nothing. It is just a lame holiday for kids to get out of school, unless it is on Sunday. Then they it doesn't matter in the slightest so I don't know why I am complaining.
Oh and for some randomness from me. Those a-pril f-ools. They just run up trees like those foxes could kill them. But in all reality, all they want are the babies. Can someone get me a MILK!? Geesh, there is no time for running uphill , though downhill is a different story. I see you at the bottom of the barrel of monkies. Can monkies really be the greatest poo flingers ever? I would think so. They have fingers on their feet! Heck, if I had fingers for feet I would fling my poo too. Cheers or chairs? Connotation or monogram? Filmography or Bruce Springsteene? Just a little random for the random people inside CA. I know you love those pickles in my car. Get them out before my NEW CAR scent is gone. Goobie cookie? Rookie.
Also, I changed my sb name to "I don't believe in mankeymankeymankeymankeymankey mankeymankeymankeymankeymankey" and it changed to "I don't believe in a.p.r.i.l f.o.o.l.s." Sweet!

You've improved alot since last time I saw your stuff! Lot's of studies or just talent? :)
Like the looseness of the first one in the last pose. Try pointing out some more details or perhaps a full bodyshot. Like the last one too, really nice. Try exagerating her pose more instead of rendering. There's a stiffness in your piece as opposed to the reference, it makes her look more like an old lady. Her legs are greath though :)

Dan: I occasionally use foundation lines, but only in my sketch book. Now I try to start with a blob and work my way to the final piece. Instead of filling the lines in with color, I erase the blob and it seems to be a little faster. Thank you for stopping by! Hope to see you more often! :]

Wow, it has been several weeks. Here's a guy I did real quick last night finally after fixing my PC. I lost all my old files in my second Maxtor internal hard drive. So no more old stuff, all new. It is a new beginning for me. Suck though, lost all my songs, all my image files, all my life. Thank God I had some of it backed up on my external hard drive. Cheers everyone!

Hey man, good work with the new digis, this (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=143149&stc=1&d=1179988892) is one is really hot. Love all those mushy soft edges in there, you're really good at that.
Sucks that you lost all of your old stuff on your hard drive. I just had a hard drive of mine crap out and was able to salvage everything off of it with a program called Data Rescue II. You can buy it from their website or can acquire it by other means *cough* bittorent *ahem*
Anyway, keep up with the regular postin, you're getting some really fun stuff.

Note: Gah, sorry guys. I should have updated more. I will put stuff down that I have done in the past two months I have been away in little spurts. Nothing much, though. I feel that I am getting more terrible at art as the days go by that I do not draw. Now I am waking up, and drawing 2 hours a night to get back into the mood.
bradley: Thanks, mate. Yes, I left too long and now I am going to attempt to be here more often.
NightMare28: Thank you.
Andy P: Wish I knew about Data Rescue before. Though it is o.k. Now I have almost a terabyte of hard drive space and it is all mostly reliable. I also am backing up everything every time I change something. I have music in two places. lulz Thanks!
Tom: I did not understand a word you said. "Smooth transactions" are alien to me. Thanks, though. <3

yay- new work from you. Interesting sketches youve got there. Looking at those thumbnails Id recommend some compositional studies. See what you can find about composition around here and the rest of the interweb. One essential point is to always keep the focus from the middle of your picture. So if you have a path or a mountain or a tower or face or anything in your picture thats clearly dominant- dont put it into the middle.. Im sure youve heard about this though. Id love to see some color from you again..

I really like the graphic quality of your pen work in your moleskine. Very clean lines and bold designs. I like the man's torso, but oops! The arms are too short. The elbow comes in at the waist and the hands fall just below where the pubic bone is, like - mid hand to pubic bone. Great muscles though :)

I'd like to see your concentrate on breaking down more solid planes of value. right now, you have a lot of strokes, which give and uneven and 'muddy' tone. Ashley wood does this really well. Also, when thinking in larger planes, it will help with brush stroke econonmy. Some people I look up to in brushtroke economy are prometheus|anj and hurricane. On the same note, I think it's also important to think about when you should have soft and hard edges, as right now because everything has a large build up of strokes, you get all soft edges, and then some random hard edges in the middle of forms.
your pen stuff is really quite nice, I'd love to see more of that :D

Your pen sketches are great and have a lot of confidence, you also shown some good progress in getting more solid planes of value in your digi-paints. Have you ever thought about doing some full-opacity paints to force yourself to be deliberate about how you lay down color and value... sometimes that helps me when I feel my stuff is too busy for it's own good. Your drawings are so good and it would be great to see their confidence translate into your paints.

Wow, really nice updates since I last visited. Sorry about not leaving a crit last time.... Really great studies you are doing, and looking at your portraits the proportions seem really well placed. I think you should spend some more time on your shading, and get a large value range in some of your sketches. Seems you like to work quick , I think maybe spend some more time on a piece, and really polished it up to help balance with all of the quick studies, and sketches. Overall though your doing the right stuff. Great to see you mixing up the subjects. (something I'm trying to do myself) Keep up the good work .:) I'll make sure to watch your progress.
