Hey all!

I'm visiting New York right now, and have some questions (about art) that I hope some of you can answer.

Umm...

First one: There's all these paintings sold on the sidewalks around Central Park and Times Square, and (after buying 6) I still don't know who the original paintier was (or course, they were prints). The person operating the stand didn't know either.

Second question: In the NBC building, theres a BIG mural covering the walls of the 1st/2nd story lobby (shared wall). I'm wondering who the artist for that was.

Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

(PS: I've seen some cool graffiti here on CA by New Yorkers, and after looking around pretty much the whole island, haven't seen anything besides worthless, artless tags. So, taggers, any adresses?)

You'll need to post a scan or describe the painting.

That's probably Diego Riviera. The Rockefeller's had him making a painting in one of their buildings. The original one included Lenin (because he was a communist), but the Rockefeller's didn't like it so they had him tear it down and put something else in place.

Diego recreated the original mural somewhere else, although I'm not sure it's the exact same one. It's called Man, Controller of the Universe. He put in a hidden jab at Rockefeller in it.

Two more graffiti art locations:

Also in Williamsburg: Keap street near the corner of Grand, there is a whole wall of cool stuff.

In Long Island City near the 7 Train stop at 21st and Van Alst, (Also near PS1) there is a graffiti art school, and as you can imagine, the whole building is covered.

Yeah, not much graffiti in Manhattan these days, those days are long gone it seems.

The mural in the the lobby of Rock Center that you are probably thinking of is by Jose Maria Sert, called "Man's Conquest" and it was the mural that replaced the Rivera one that was torn down.
