I think you could benefit by doing some landscape drawings from observation. Once you have built up mose of a vocabulary of landscapes, you will have an easier time painting convincing landscapes from imagination.

You have an interesting concept here. I think studying composition will really help your next piece. Take a look at this article by Phil Straub (link (http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=3275&page=3)). I took his cgworkshop this fall and this was lesson number 1. After studying composition you will never look at artwork the same way again.

A popular method is to divide your work area into thirds and place the key points of interest at the "golden means", as Phil describes it. Some may call it overused but it's a great way to start an environment. Take almost any picture out of the best of ca section and divide it up. See where the focal points are. Notice too where the pictures have high impact areas and where there are areas for the viewers eye to rest.

Here are some examples of good composition.

Also, this is just one way to look at these pieces, another person can see something totally different than what I did. I redid you concept in a couple different compositions. The first I used the rule of thirds and the second iconic.

When you are sketching don't worry about coming up with a great composition or putting down a grid and trying to keep everything in the thirds. Just sketch, there are no rules, when you find something that sparks your imagination see if you can compose it to make the maximum effect you want.

Good luck!

Wow, that is some fantastic advice right there!
Its really great to see that the more seasoned artists are willing to help out the newer guys. You have a very easy writing style to follow too Roger.

Look foreward to seeing your next sketches Infidel with this advice in mind.
