One of my sisters bought me this big old stainless steel palette with an aluminum knife that has a leather thong tied in a loop through a hole in its handle. I think it must be for canapes or serving cheese logs or something. It was made in India.
The other thing I thought to do with it would be to hang it by some clothesline through the fingerhole. It makes a cool gong sound. I think it would only be a matter of time before my neighbor comes out and yells "My baby's trying to sleep over here, you nimrod!"
This thing has a lot of potential.
She also got me a Target gift card that I used to buy a three step stool that I used to prune my peach tree today.

I went out and bought myself a box of Super Sculpey and sat myself down for a nice traditional Christmas eve of making a horrible little wrinkled flesh-golem beast, with the sounds of Bollywood filling my home with cheer and excessive reverb effects. I'll be having dinner today with good friends at a fancy downtown restaurant, and that's what I'm really looking forward to.
As far as stuff people gave me... I think my dear old mom is getting me a new rain jacket- she insists on giving a Big Gift every year, and I try to reserve things I really need so she can give a meaningful gift. I'm not otherwise big on getting stuff.

Remember kids, christmas/yule/etc is all about family and friendship of the human kind, be generous, but not too much. Thus far, concept art community is the best gift for me, and probably for many others. Thank you those who support CA and of course those responsible. :yayca:

Yup, i'm getting into it, despite my parents hatred for the sport.
I had a small bag (like, 2 foot) with very small mitts but I wanted something to be able to improve with. 14 oz is actually lighter than I imagined, but for a bag I suppose it's a bit much...
Still gets to your knuckles though, I guess eventually with more practice it'll lower.
Cool to see another boxer afficianado! Well, someone who has interest in it anyway :P

I got a fairly inexpensive but still very nice-sounding acoustic guitar. I'm lovin it already. It was cool how my mom kept it a surprise until the very end; the guitar comes in a very large box that's pretty much unmistakable, so she didn't put it out under the tree until right before bed on Christmas Eve, so I wouldn't know weeks ahead of time that I was for sure getting a guitar.
I also got a roll-up piano, a portable DVD player, a carrying case for my Intuos3 9x12, and a very nice 23"x31" portfolio.
Plus, cheesy as it sounds, I got some nice warm and fuzzy "just glad to be here with people I love" feelings.:rendered:

Seriously. Does anybody think I am actually supposed to paint with this? I don't know where she got it and I am not sure of its intended function. Shown here the polished ultra smooth side. I couldn't make the knife any duller if I tried for years.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/arttorney/canapes001.jpg
The thumb hole is actually beveled so the polished side is down.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/arttorney/canapes002.jpg
If Ilaekae will sharpen up the edges with his rotary tool and Dremels, I can become an artistic supervillain, Master of the Flying Pallete. The shiny side will reflect away all those laser beams and power rays and stuff.

and forty bucks....
Justin.
December 25th, 2006, 09:13 PM
DAMN jake.
The following is for both Christmas and for my birthday...
An Mp3 player (240 bucks, 35 hour battery life, 30 gb, and all that unecessary crap like video, recording, radio, etc.)
A watercolor moleskin I bought accidentaly ($15, big waste of money) along with 3 other smaller, LIGHTWEIGHT paper moleskins (2x big waste of money)
A drawing board (11 bucks)
A 40 dollar art store giftcard (now if only they had a good selection.)
2 shirts (22 bucks)
I don't think I'm disappointed because I only got 2 really cool things (MP3 player and Giftcard), but more because I knew exactly what I was gonna get. There was pretty much no suprise aside from the amount of the gift card. With art, my parents can't get anything because they don't know what to look for. My mom said she was going to buy me an easel but didn't know which kind to get (even after giving her a pic and info a few weeks back.) Same goes for oil paints, which I am gonna get with the 40 dollars.
I really shouldnt be bitching, but I liked christmas better when I didn't know what I was getting... and Jake's post just really makes me want to cry, seriously. =( That laptop is better than this computer...

I got:
-Another chance to see my Grandparents alive and well
-Another chance to see my dog alive and well (as far as 14 year old dogs go)
-A certain pain in the chest (hint: rhymes with 'token fart'... so emo)
-A night out candlepin bowling and rollerskating with my two best friends since elementary school (helps the emo like you wouldn't believe).
-Tea kettle for my tea snob self.
-"Merry Christmas" by Eyvind Earle, something I have been wanting for ages.
All I ask for now is a safe flight back to San Fran and some peace of mind and heart for the new year.

Err...a gift card, and a few cards with cash in 'em. Some pretty decent pajamas. Some candy, a shirt. Couple that with just a parade of indifferent relatives streaming through the house, each asking in succession "How's college?" "When's it going to be over?" and then leaving, and you have: My Christmas. Holly-dee-doo.
Anyway, emo-ness aside, glad everybody's having such kickass ones. I think I just hit a bad one this year, happens sometimes, look forward to returning to the Yuletide energy full force next year. Sorry to hear about that token far, Steph. Do take it easy.

ah. heng: Hopefully the year 2007 will bring you great gifts!
Christmas is the worst time to have something bad happen or to be alone... :(
...err...
This is the second Christmas I've told most people what I want... and for me it works SUPER~~
I don't mind at all knowing what I get as a present - this way I get stuff that I really want. And stuff is good at making little me happy. As sad as it sounds...
The biggest gift I got was a second monitor for my computer (sadly, though, the old one doesn't quite match the new one so I just may have to get another new one myself...).
Then from my brother I got the DVD of the movie Rasputin... and bought myself another Rasputin movie and "Nicholas&Alexandra".
And to further make my room completely insane, a friend gave me a 2 metre long Russian flag, which is now hanging on my wall. :dur:
Then a few random gifts as well, chocolate, candles, two gift sertificates for facials (? Eh, I guess my parents think I have terrible skin or something...), a horoscope book telling me how the year 2007 will be like... it's creepy.
While my relatives and friends are all nice people, I'm not. I only got my brother a bottle of vodka and participated in buying a toy Robin for a friend. The Batman just needed company.
I'm so happy. Was a nice and calm Christmas, with good food and silly jokes.

Man, happy to see all the Wii's people are getting. Not just because of how much everyone wants one, but if the family joins in on the gaming those are gonna be some lovely christmas memories :)
Anyhoo, since this is a topic about presents in general, how bouts we tell everyone what we got for others?
For my dad: the book Angels and Demons. He read the DaVinci code and hated it, but heard good things about this book. Glad my dad is reading more and expanding his imagination :)
For my mom: a dvd of her favorite comedian, the east-indian comic Russel Peters. Hope to watch it with her, he's awesome.
For my little sis: A complete acrylic painting kit. Small tubes of paint but good selection. She's showing more interest in art so I thought I'd give her more of a nudge.
For my uncle: The old Pink Panther dvd. It's what he wanted
For my aunt: A nice little silver wireframe deer, after my initial present was given to her ahead of time by some old bitty. :(
For my grandma: A painting of her I did. Looks like crap to me, but everyone said that she'd like it, so whatever.

What did I give (that's the real measure of Christmas anyway, ne?) made care pkgs formy family full of asian treats (rice flour and red bean stuffs), some books to the in-laws, and the wifey got chocolates and a 130 year old hand-carved wooden tanuki statue from Meiji Era Japan. Coolest gift ever.

-New watch with a compass on it, bizarre but welcome.
-Couple of cool shirts
-Enough sweets to kill 1000 diabetics
-Cash
Bizzarely enough, no socks or aftershave.
I also got one of those Swiss army gadgets with about 100 mystery tools on them. I don't know that I will require a "removing thorn from lions paw" tool in the next year but I'm sure I'll be glad that I had one anyway. Yay for weird presents.
I wasn't bothered what I got really, being an old fart all I really wanted was a nice munch on Xmas day and to hang out with good friends and I got that so I'm cool.
Having a pretty sweet time so far.
