Hey guys. Thought I'd post up my images from my demo. I want so say big thanks to everyone that listened as I plodded through. It makes me all fuzzy inside to know that at least a few people enjoyed it and said so, so thanks for lifting my spirits :)

For those of you that did not attend I did this series as a personal project over the last two months. I wrote up the rough theme on what I wanted to accomplish and set out to have a series of concepts for a near-future military troop transport that used stealth and real aircraft tech. The whole process was a great learning experience and while I made a buncha bad drawings along the way I think I came up with a design that does everything I wanted it to do.

Here's my thesis / the more technical explanation of what the aircraft is supposed to be.

VTOL= Vertical take off and landing

VTOL propulsion troop/cargo transport military aircraft that could exist in the near future, employing modern conventions for engines, flight, stealth, armaments, armor, decorations/markings and computerized warfare. So what does this mean, It means that the thing needs to have the look and feel of existing in the modern world and in reality. Reasons for this approach? Has applications for movies and games. *should talk about the difference between the two* Makes it real, grounds it in reality etc. and therefore makes a more engaging experience. Adds layers to your design and therefore it's impact.

Why VTOL?
Vtol is a tricky technology, It has real tactical military application but hasn't blossomed yet.The osprey is in service as a rescue vehicle and a military role but has complications with it's engines resulting in soldier fatalities. At present there is no VTOL jet aircraft in service that is more effective or economical than modern helicopters, i.e. Hueys and other transport helicopters are still in use.

I know this might be confusing so if you have any questions please post them up and I'll respond to them as best I can. Thanks!

First off, thanks for posting this. Secondly, that is an incredible amount of concepting you did for this... impressive, most impressive.

Fuck, thanks guys :bashful:

James: dude, I wish :) yer too kind man.

I was going to try and post up my notes along with this. They don't make a ton of sense but someone might be able to make out some of what I talked about by reading them. Unfortunately I have to ammend the file so for now I'm going to go do some sorely needed chrisma' shopping and I'll put up the VTOL shortly.

cheers!

;p I could see this being used right now! Watch out kemp! The army might get you!!! :O!!!!

Wow, all I have to say is that it's pretty amazing the amplitude of your research and work. I have to ask, where they are all aligned and they have progress shots, are those done in a 3d program, or are they just views you've made to make life easier for the modelers?

In any case, Bravo Kemp! I wish I would have been there to see it XD

Kemp-tron,

Thanks for posting this. It looks way tighter online than it does projected.
Had a great time watching your demo, very informative and inspiring.
Keep up the great work

the aircraft design is genius, as are your model progression images. Those are freaking fantastic.

I wish I had seen this demo, I loved the demo you did in Montreal, so to see you totally in your element would have been awesome.

This was one of the best demos of the workshop man, great job! We don't usually get a look at someone's long term concepting process, usually just their process for creating a single image. It was really eye-opening.

Thanks for posting these!

What about the harrier jump jet, with it's Roll's royce V/TOL engines?
The Harrier was the only truly successful V/TOL design.

Or am i thinking wrongly.

Nicely done Kemp, very well pulled together and some damn good designs.

The first image has a bit of weird perspective on the tail, but it still takes nothing from the overall impact of all that concepting.

SHYMAN most of the harriers were used as VSTOVL aircraft due to the huge amount of cooling the engines needed in vertical take off and the relatively small payload they could carry as a VTOL aircraft. They can't fulfill the roles of most helicopters and don't fly supersonic like most combat fighter jets. They ain't great but they're what we've got.

Great stuff Kemp- I doubt 99.9% of concept artists out there even make the slightest attempt at being this functional or accurate in their designs. The process shots of the 3d models are cool to see as well.

The work you did for us on auto assault was definitely among the best we had done, you are indeed the man when it comes to mechanical design. I was lurking around insomania - i meant to say hello but was caught up in the whirlwind of creativity. Always a pleasure Kemp, i'm looking foreward to your next post.

Wow. Very nicely executed. The functionality is really a strong point. What program is being used to make the initial block out design? It looks similar to sketch up, but many of those types of programs look similar. Great stuff. Thanks for showing how great Insomnia can be for those of us that couldnt attend.

That looks awesome. Love all the designs scketches.

One thing that caught my eye was the camo on the plane. Camouflage is designed to break up the silhouette of its user, as well as help blend it into the surroundings. The blotches should atleast touch the edges on the surfaces.

Here's an example: http://ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004/08/images/pr_buhl_a4_w1_top.jpg

Great stuff, keep it coming.
