In case anyone is interested, I just found this site with al kinds of academic research on it pertaining to master painting. Specifically, I found papers on John Singleton Copley's painting method, canvases types used in past centuries, Underpainting radiography, and many papers on grounds (panels, plywood, etc.) If you are into that area of learning, take a look.

There is a paper in there that I was just reading in which you take your panel and prepare it with a "twill" type texture in order to get the effect of canvas. I have played with glueing canvas to panel in order to get the right texture while having the hard surface. I have also noticed the when priming my panels that if I use a wide bristle brush after roller application that I get a "texture". I think I may play with accentuating the text of the panel to get a more canvas affect.
Has any worked with that type of ground?
