Okay, folks... this is it!

Now its up to the (female) jury to pick the 12 top contributions that will make it into the calendar. As with the girls calendar, the pics will be posted without names. I will post the names related to the numbers when the judging is done.

You, guys, really rocked earth under my feet... I didn't expect this... I looked like this :O. I just know I don't know men at all. I like all of them, you had a lot of fun preparing us for surprise. It sure feels like shock to me. Many very beautiful pieces, a lot of irony and jokes in some images. Testostoro cigarettes, LOLOLOLOL, don't smoke near ovulating women. OMG.
Glen, nice girls are just pathetic 3 millions with some? You are nasty :).
Guys, you need to put some numbers on images, if you want to hear some crits to your piece.

My personal choice for the most attractive males ( just my preferences of the character, not preferences of the picture) is the guy with an apple ( the lifework only image), probably the most attractive to me, the two guys in a shower room, one of them looking like a dancer Michael Baryshnikov and the other one with a green face, Chuck mate image :dur:, yeah , you are very recognizable, the guy dressing for football game with red socks, guy with little dog, I like him, ninja guy, the one who wants to kill them, I like him, :), there is something attractive in him, both guys with guns, both attractive,; guy with arabesques, the wild one... probably more, I need to look again.
Image with a man playing flute is lovely too. Nice romantic feeling.
Ohhhh, Sin with us is very, very attractive too :D... Ahahahahaha.
You are crazy people!
I like the first image too, don't know why, but it looks sure like very manly thing to do :).
And I like lamb horns on muscular looking guy, with brush strokes of hurricane.
Guy in forest is very nicely painted.

um....hehe...ok...theres some interesting entries here...verrrrrry interesting....a few of you guys have a weird idea about 'male-pinups'..... sorry fellas, but a few of them seem to have lost the plot if it's to get the female hormones going; unless they are meant to attract those batting for the same team.....(sorry to be harsh)
I like the Santa pic; the horned denom pic-no.4; the full-one genital pic-bold, daring hehe; the 2 pics of a guy with a machine gun and Poshspices WIP....

Good work overall guys!!!
Some of these are pretty weird, I must say... a lot more messed up sexualities than I expected :P
Many of the entries look a bit rushed or unfinished which is a bit of a downer. #9 for example, it's a very cool image, but it looks so not done, specially that rushed weird hand really brings the piece down for me.
#5, that looks a bit too gray-ish... if it's self reffed, you better go see a doctor :P
#23 I really like the fact that you went for a different kind of man than most. He's not really MY type, but it's a great pic anyway.
I love Poshspice's WIP, I wish you had finished it, that's one sexy guy ;)
My top favorites are #4, #8, #16 and #21, which are the ones that IMO better capture the combination between a well done image and an appealing male character :)

OK, numbers are here now...
The most attractive male for me is the gentleman fully dressed :dur: , risking his head under an apple tree. Mostly for the pondering mood in the picture, his hawk like nose, his face, little detail (his knee). And overall the landscape reminds me paintings of Gainsborough's English landscapes, and the same mood, calm and personal. Romantic kind of guy, free spirit, how can I not love guy like this? :).
The second most attractive 25, all men are very attractive, torsos of the guys in BG are beautiful. The poses, the faces, gestures and stylized shadows. I think the artist know us women pretty well, what we would like to see. Very attractive colors and composition and overall Boys locker room. interesting to know what's going on there :).
I like" Sin with me", I think it is very witty and execution is wonderful and yes, it is attractive.
I like 16 for careless attitude and overall it is very nicely done image, 18 for lovely scene and gentle seduction, 17 again, very good using of symbols to create certain mood, bold, energetic and yes, pretty manly.
23 is very beautiful manner to paint and mood is wonderful in this one, quiet and appealing to me. BTW, women love this kind of man, they feel safe and loved and able to be weak and feminine. This kind of man can make woman really happy, not some self- adoring narcissist. Women want gentleness and calm reassurance, stability from men, not muscles or good looks, in my opinion.
27, it is wonderful execution and it is funny... Poor Santa, he just wants to deliver toys in time for children,he is supposed to be asexual . But the artist decided to use him as a sex symbol, and Santa did his best to represent :).
28, color choice and composition is very interesting, and the guy is sexy. I wish it was a little bit more flexibility in lines and figure. Reminds me Schiele's drawings.
4 has a very pleasant face and I like how roundish the line of his head. I like the horns too.
He is attractive, Hurri :). really like his head and his face, composition could have been a bit more interesting and somehow his body feels too tense...
15 good motion in the picture, from an imagination? very truthful, he is about to roll...
1 I like the pose and careless attitude.
15 torso is beautiful, Pat, and I like that you wanted him romantic.

Question: Did these also have to go through a "raunch-free" filter that the girls' pin-ups had to? If so can we see the ones that didn't make it? :D

December 20th, 2006, 01:08 PM

I'm so happy!! This truly makes me laugh, in that good way!
By far the sexiest of them is Santa! There's something hawt about a fat man in a silk g string in the cover of a saturday pr0n!! lol Awesome!
I'm just happy to see the different perspectives you all have on what is sexy to women...now I can't say they have all hit me in particular, but that's the beauty of a pinup! It''s a little for everyone! ;p It will be interestingly tough to judge these...>.> I don't feel worthy!!

It's finallly!!! Done.
General note it is great see so many contributing male artist and their own perspections of what females may like in a male body. These make me glad to be a man.
Woman mode: is how I think women might react.
1. I like how you use your whites on the figure (dare I say chalk lights). However, felt that the bright constrasts in the figure really clashed with the chalk-like lights of the figure. I backgrd lacked depth because it was so very dark. The wall art was a nice touch but lack a true frame defining the wall from the pictures. Woman mode: I cant say I know alot of women who feel that men who fall sleep with a glass beer bottle beside them are very sexy. Plus them tighty whiteys dont do him any justice. The attitude is summed up with the three leaf clover, happy go lucky.
2. OH Behave!! Him I like. Painterly styled. He seems to me to be a model. I see you have a good understanding of how light behaves on a figure as well. I liked alot about this features anatomy but some things bother me. Woman mode: Like the zygomatic bone in the face probably should've been alittle more pronounced. Women (subconsiously) key in on facial features the most and judge fatherly potential based sometimes on the way the zygomatic bone frames the face. This feature needs some zygomatic action. Other than that his feet dont read well enough to me even in shadow.
3. What i did like. I liked the style of him, really neat, also I see a wim or wink at elvis one of the sexiest men ever. What I didn't like were the shoes, though stylish they make him. (Woman mode) appear more unrealistic and more like a cartoon. Also the chest is really uber flat even for a petite sized guy the chest should have more elevation to it, seemed like you set up the shirt first when ya shoulda set up the chest. I liked it thou.
4. I rally really liked this one. The wholistic approach of anatomy and the firm execution of light. Woman mode it shows the domaniance man/halfman has over fire and the sword set off this dominance effectively. The color theory behind it is excelling as well. Minor if any crit. It is a double edged sword when it comes to drawing hawt guys but then drawing hawt beasty boys is a whole nutha ballpark. Your single failing in this piece is that the beastial facial bones are constructed in a manner that makes him seem a bit femine. Again lack of zygomatic structure. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was the best in show overall
5. Very well executed. The penis has looked so falacid (spchk). I dont like to look a penises but for the sake of a critiuque. I dont even want to know how many you had to scope to get the measurements right. Woman mode the penis looks healthy the scortum is well defined. However the hands need some tlc. I know they are framing the body so that the ladies focus more on the man meat but ask a couple of chicks and you will find out that women think that hands are the most sexy part of a man. Big hands, veiny hands, rigid rougid weathered hands. But a very good redition of the man's other best friend.
6. As a piece of art this one is great. It was done excedling well the color paints the world and tells a story. Howeverrr, Where is the sexy where is the female allurational factor. (Woman mode) I'm no girl but the stereotype that is portrayed is a dying trend. This one is very reminiscent of " a fiftie cent video", dont get me twisted I watch and enjoy but thats acting, day to day women dont share. But I;m glad the hiphoppity culture could be represented and shown.
7. Dare i say self portrait. Thats what is feels like to me. Not much to critque being as how I feel it is a self portrait and i dont judge guys. Colorwise good, It didnt feel flat. I didnt like it more because it wasn't ambitious enough.
Theoritically chubby guys can be sexy in a way. THis piece spoke of a nod of Christmas and the slothfulness that follows.
8. Clearly one of the lead entrys. I like the pale skin on red accesories the frame and the tilt of the male giving the illusion of angelic origin. him actually being an angel when in truth is a devilsh boy coaching women into sweet surrender. Women mode uho la la!!! Nothing to crit. Well done my friend.
9 A hippy with a heart, I like this because of the backgrd treatment and the lack of serious structure in the various musle groups. dont get me wrong the muscles are there (mostly) but the free expressions and motion shadows play with your mind and allows you to forgive his awkwardness. The designs around the character and in the bg actually remind me a WHole lot of this tutorial i read in one of the photoshop magazines but it couldn't be. I wish you have worked the hand and brachoradialis/forearm better. But your forgiven. Woman mode still this screams freeness not hawtness.
10. yes you do know your main muscle groups yes you do know your anatomy yes you do great work with lights and shadows, however the theme and overall illustration is of masulinity not a hawt man. See the message I'm reading and many women are reading is " here take it, here is my masculinity view it. He lacks character and compassion and empathy very important character aspects of sexyness. I mean I dont know if chicks are hot in the pants for your buffed out anime/comic book muscle dude if they are then good. Plz forgive me. I'd love to see how you do comics though and i want to learn what you are already aware of in anatomy.
* Hahh* 20 more to go.
11 Watercolors right? I sort of see where you were going but then you didnt' quite get there. I mean young buckin axe swinging rural boys are potentially hawt to ma lays. But this guy looks more like a danty lanky boy. Woman Mode Visualize this as a young viril man splittering wood stopping to quinch his thirst with a bottle of water. THe water flowing down is ripped muscular frame onto his sun baked head neck and chest. WAIT wait I'm getting too into it now but you get the idea. Overall he should have been closer.
12. Forgettable, No ears, poor or indefinite head gear I dont know whether it is a hood or an afro. I dont want to be too harsh if your young but still I'd like to see a bit more work put it to the backgrd and the character. Again its a man but where is the sexy. I know its men and all but in the Female calendar by #12 I had a napkin for all the drool on my desktop.
13. See guys this is the level girls are looking for. Great job I bet you will get a big print. Funny to, guaranteed to make the cut. Minor crit because i must, cigarette smoke could have been more snake like. Also if you study ads the subject never actually smokes a lit cigarette. Still a cowabunga!! (whatever that means from me).
14. I really really wish you did a better bg. the Perspective hurts. Plus I know for fact that some women like them she males, but mainstream i dont know. YOu definitively stand out. But not in the hawt sexy man department. This one I have mixed emotions about.
oh finally the half way point.
15. It a pleasure to meet you, canvas to eye. Whoever you are great job. You probably do or could do rather well professional. Your art is both sexy and calendar friendly. I want to draw like you someday.
Will be continued.......... or not. Edit Spchked

Some of these are very interesting little dips into peoples imaginations... Bizarre yet... strangely compelling... I think! :) Sorry I didn't finish mine, but time was a bit of an issue here amongst other things. I was trying for a sort of 'Heathcliffe/MrRochester' character... Quite suprised to see it here actually! Personal favourite is 25. Quite why, I don't know... but I'm sure it has something to do with mushrooms...

25 is the best pic for me and I have a good guess who did it. Props to you, man!
Santa's pic is another really intense standout (which made me laugh for a full 5 minutes), 15 probably has the best mood, 16 is the cutest (tugs at your heartstrings - that cute little puppy and the cute guy with it), 28 is also very good (needs more work on anatomy/refinement but captures a strong essense).
The comments aren't exactly based on refinement of the pics, more of the feeling I got from them as a "girl" and which ones I felt most strongly for. For example I really like 23 but that gun just puts me off; 21 is too alpha for me.

#16 (i would totally date a guy like this!)
#27 well done IMO, and may I just say, nice fuckin' touch with the details! Lol...

I find it funny and quite unsurprising that alot of guys here would call this calendar "gay". Some of you guys are so insecure about your masculinity lol. I find it very amusing, but then again there is a double standard... girls can get away with alot more in terms of sexuality than guys can. Don't listen to the nay sayers I say! I love all the entries, I'm being quite truthful. I think alot of these were sincere attempts (apart from a few cynical entries imho hehe) at portraying something about men that they think women would like, or how they would like to appear to women. So quit heckling you guys. It only shows your insecurities!

I did think about getting in on this but after a brief Q&A/research session with the missus on "what would a sexy guy pinup look like?" I was left more confused than anything and decided to not go there.
The impression I got was that..
Good= Carey Grant, attitude, James Dean, confidence, James Bond, Shaft, manners, holding doors open for old ladies even if no one is watching*, Spartacus, honesty even if it's unpopular, tight ass.
Bad= greasy muscle boys, pouting, Chippendales, facial hair, vain guys who will hog the bathroom for two hours, guys who are unwilling to accept that you just might know more about scripting a cisco router than they do..
Yeah, that's pretty much where I bailed.

P.S.: Posh- would love to see your pic in colour someday. I admit it- I'm a fanboy ;) Considering the feedback on your WIP here, I guess there are others who share my oppinion.
P.P.S: I saved all the WIP's from the private group on my harddisk. If you guys dont mind, i'd like to make some collages of them and post them in the thunderdome thread for educational reasons (kinda like a "making of") over the hollydays.

was this supposed to be about what we think is sexy in a man,or what we think they see as sexy in a man? my guess was the first thing.it seems to me the term "pin-up" carries a certain number of expectations, but afaik it wasn't part of the original concept discussion. like Carni i thought this was supposed to be about a man's expression/interpretation/comment on the idea of male sexuality, not necessarily a pandering to female expectations of a "hawt" dude.
once "pin-up" became part of the brief, it completely changed my approach to the subject, not necessarily for the better.

Many guys who looked at the girls calendar gave their opinions, and even their ratings of what they thought was sexy or not about our pieces (including you Carni :)), even if those were our interpretations of sexy women. And I think it's great to see how others perceive our portrayal of sexiness/beauty/whatever. It makes everything more fun :D

as to clear things up: yes.. the main concept of this little thunderdome was to find out how the participants would define "sexy men".
to me, the results were as I expected. observing all the entries, one can clearly see that a lot of the participants value personality more than physical traits. adding to that a lot of symbolism can be seen.
There are satyrs, the never failing seducers of mythology. Some of those males depicted have weapons, a symbol for protection . rebellion as a theme has been chosen a lot, just as social security.
all of these pics have one serious question in common "what kind of guy would I fall for, if I was a woman? what would I value the most?" not "how 'chippendale' can I get with my picture".
the results show a lot of compromise, the most obvious being #14 - the closest thing to a girl you can get in a "male calendar".
I know how hard it is to find such a definition as a heterosexual man, since I participated myself. ultimately the goal of this project was to stay away from the rules of "what is sexy" the media dictates us and to be fully honest in our portrayals.
hope that clears it up a bit,
cheers,
Etienne

You know, Id love to see which ones of the many entries you guys consider "gay". Aside one gay painting and one potentially having the "gay vibe" I see nothing but good entries to a contest which was intended towards the female members of CA.
Now dont get me wrong, Im not offended by those comments, on the contrary if in fact most of the entries made you feel "uneasy" or "uncomfortable" with your masculinity, and immediately gave you the "gay vibe" then I say our job is done here and done well. Im just curious to know which ones of the entries gave you that feeling..??
this isn't directed towards one person, more to everyone who got that "gay vibe".

I do wish we'd had a set of guildelines in what was to be judged. After I asked VirusArtist, I stuck with the theme of "Sexy Men" ("what kind of guy would I fall for, if I was a woman?") and chose pieces I thought displayed that. There were plently of artistically lovely pieces that didn't fit the theme as I saw it. So....yes. I would have liked a set of solid guidelines. Hopefully we'll be doing more such community competitions in the future. :)

Well here's a little insight on the process.
1. Theme and overall look: Will this particular piece work well with the theme of a pinup for men? Will it work well with other pieces alongside of it? Is it eye catching enough?
2. Finished factor: What pieces look finished, or not at all. Many pieces were turned down because of the unfinished factor. I like to think "if I were to buy a calendar. I would be sad to see unfinished pieces in my calendar"
...wow that's it...I didn’t consider sexiness...because even if this IS a pin up , it's more of an artsy calendar. For example, The women's calendar had many different views and tastes on what sexy was. While I am a bit disappointed not to see images that are more to my taste, that's a personal issue, because what is not sexy to me, may be really hot for someone else ( a wonderful example are more of the older men in the calendar...I may not be attracted to it but there are many women out there who are really into older men) . I'm no judge of that factor.
(also....#4! can't we put your naked elf there instead??)
edit: I enjoy drawing women more actually.. It challenges me to truly think what does the other gender thinks of being sexy, without being too obvious and generic about it. Drawing what I think sexy is in men is rather easy ;p

A good image of a man needs to achieve only two main objectives: he’s got to look healthy, and he’s got to demonstrate some character trait that attracts and holds attention. Secondarily, he has to be rendered well enough to communicate those first two things.
I don’t think these objectives are at odds with what straight males would want to include in their “regular” art, which is why I’m a bit surprised, overall, that the results were frequently not quite in touch with what a woman would want to see in an illustration of a man. There is nothing to be ashamed about in rendering an attractive member of your own sex. Consider for a moment why women buy magazines that feature photographs of other women. It is not because they are attracted to the models, but because they want to be like the models. Men, if you draw your characters as you yourself would like to be, then you will likely add women to your audience without putting yourself into a position that makes you uncomfortable.
Overall, the problems that I saw most often in these submissions were that images had not been pushed enough to a level of finish, and hands (and sometimes feet) were neglected as a source of emotion, story-telling, and eye-candy. These were rendering problems that were interfering with the main objectives. Some entries seem to have been done in the spirit of joke entries, and others were ambiguous as to whether they were sincere. I chose a point-system by which I wouldn’t have to filter out the gags from the real contestants, and thus avoid the problem of ruling out sincere but off-the-mark submissions, and by which everyone could get feedback. My rating system is as follows:
Physical Attractiveness: How physically fit and/or attractive is this fellow? One to ten.
Personality: Would I like to get to know him better? One to ten.
Technical: What level of technical skill has this image been rendered with? One to ten.
And here are the results. . .
#1
Physical Attractiveness: 5 This guy has about an average build. He is drunk, which makes him for the moment less-than-healthy.
Personality: 2 This guy is a serious couch potato. He couldn’t even get his pants all the way off before conking out! I’ll be more inclined to get to know him once he’s shaken off the hangover and taken a shower.
Technical: 5 This is a strong start – the colors are good, the composition is fun, and the subject has successfully been presented with humor. However, it’s still in a very sketchy state for a finished piece. The rendering quality is hiding his physical attractiveness. Hands, feet, and face could all be used more expressively.
Total: 12
#2
Physical Attractiveness: 7 Woo-woo, a naked bum! He seems physically fit; however, the rendering quality obscures him.
Personality: 8 I am intrigued by the notion of an artist painting a nude self-portrait, which is what it appears the subject is doing. It takes balls (or some equivalent) and a good heater to stand around nekkid while drawing one’s self. And it takes further balls (or equivalent) to show the picture to anyone afterward. My only question remains – is this actually a self-portrait? If so, I salute you!
Technical: 5 The rendering quality is holding this one back. I’m not certain if what he is drawing on is a laptop. The composition is decent, considering that the fellow has been posed dead-center. His hands are sad lumps, and I wish his face and neck had been developed more.
Total: 20
#3
Physical Attractiveness: 6 He’s well-groomed and thin. That left arm is uncomfortably short, though.
Personality: 8 He could be a jerk, or he could be amazingly witty. I am intrigued enough that I would be willing to get to know him just to find out. The covered eyes and lack of hands are both missed opportunities for more expressiveness.
Technical: 6 The rendering of the man is the best part – especially his face! However the composition and the background are holding the image back. The arrangement of shapes in the rectangle just isn’t eye-pleasing – there are some tangents going on that are causing the image trouble, such as his feet at the bottom edge. A light-source with shadows could also help this image.
Total: 20
#4
Physical Attractiveness: 8 Woo-woo, Mr. Hardbody! Here is a man. . . er, demon, who has a thing for physical fitness. His muscles are starting to push the limit between attractiveness and scariness, but I suspect a solid build is a necessity for a career track as a guard in the underworld. And oddly enough, his face is one of the more attractive things about him, despite the demonic attributes.
Technical: 4 Hmm, I’m afraid there isn’t much here to tell me about this guy, other than that he has horns, wields a sword, and has a package. Does he read Jane Austin or watch Star Trek in between lifting weights and slicing his enemies in half?
Rendering: 7 The highlight of this image is the light, and with it, the colors. Compositionally, with the exception of the bright spot on the tree in the lower right, the light leads the eye around nicely. The mark-making is generally good, but it has left some of those muscles looking a bit too sharp around the edges. The hands weren’t rendered with the same care as the face, which is a shame.
Total: 19
#5
Physical Attractiveness: 1 It’s a bland white body and a hairy nut-sack.
Personality: 1 While there is an opportunity here to tell some sort of story with those hands, the opportunity was missed.
Technical: 5 That’s some well-rendered pubic hair. This would make a good medical illustration.
Total: 7
#6
Physical Attractiveness: 6 This guy gets points for being well-groomed and well-costumed, but I’m subtracting points for the poorly-matching hat and the gawdawful scrunched-up face.
Personality: 2 Eew. Not only is he already claimed by two contemptuous-looking women, but he himself is looking at me as if I smell like three-day-old fish. I would be inclined to kick this fellow in the shins.
Technical: 9 This is a well-put-together piece. The lighting and colors are gorgeous. If the whole thing is brought up in quality to the level of man’s face, it’ll be a fabulous illustration.
Total: 17
#7
Physical Attractiveness: 3 Perhaps fully dressed and well-groomed this fellow would command attention in a good way. As-is, he is flabby, and not rendered in a way that emphasizes his good features, like hands and skin.
Personality: 7 LOL! Okay, I’m curious. This fellow has been caught at a moment off goofitude. He is obviously a geek like me, and I might be inclined to get to know him better once he finished getting dressed.
Technical: 4 This is still in a sketchy state. And what’s with the montage background?

Physical Attractiveness: 9 He’s thin and muscular, but not overly so. Rawr.
Personality: 9 If I were inclined to jump in the sack with random men who gave me naughty looks, then this fellow would be a contender.
Technical: 9 Very clean and tidy! Nice line-work and composition. He’s a bit shiny, but as an angel I guess he can get away with it. Rather novel, in fact. I think he could do with a little less line-work between individual muscles, but eh!

Physical Attractiveness: 3 This fella has the ungroomed and unexercised look of a band groupie.
Personality: 4 His facial expression is intriguing, but neither welcoming or decipherable. Either he’s being spiritually moved by the music, or he just stepped in a bear-trap.
Technical: 4 A stronger light-source would improve the rendering on this fellow. And I’m afraid the lack of a background feels like a cop-out. As a graphic design, this image could be improved by the inclusion of some very clean, tidy lines to balance out the sketchiness.
Total: 11
#10
Physical Attractiveness: 8 Well, he’s certainly got a well-kept body.
Personality: 2 Is he an artist’s model? Is he a lawyer checking himself out in the mirror before going to work? Did they confiscate his belt at airport security?
Technical: 2 For a quick life-drawing, this is a great study. It isn’t a finished illustration, however.
Total: 12
#11
Physical Attractiveness: 2 While I’m sure that if this fellow can take down a tree with an axe then he must be in top physical condition, the actual proportions of his body are odd.
Personality: 4 I’m just waiting for him to burst out in a round of “I’m a lumberjack and I’m okay!” He could possibly be a nice guy, but the technical limitations make it hard to tell much about him.
Technical: 4 bonus points for using watercolors – that’s a tricky medium. The composition has too much unused space, however. Something you can try in the future: try putting some blue in the shadows to simulate daylight.
Total: 10
#12
Physical Attractiveness: 5 It’s hard to tell anything about his physicality under those clothes, but seeing as he is poised to shovel the driveway, I’m guessing that he’s in decent shape. His face is rather bland.
Personality: 7 Men who take on household chores are hawt!
Technical: 5 This image is nice and clean, but more could be done with the rendering of the various parts. Even in such a low-light situation some shadowing is needed around the edges of objects to give depth. And compositionally, the image needs more shapes in it to make that space interesting.
Total: 17
#13
Physical Attractiveness: 5 Since he is obviously a cowboy, that brings his rating up automatically. But aside from his props, he doesn’t have physical features visible that would make me want to see him without the props. That left hand is a bit small, and I feel sorry for him for being forced to wear such tight pants.
Personality: 4 He is a good neutral mannequin for the props he is wearing, but has little to offer beyond that.
Technical: 8 The strength of this piece is in the writing. I ROLFLMAOed. Big points for creativity there. The art itself needs to have the precision of the photographs it is parodying to be successful – and unfortunately it falls a bit short. I am left wondering where the rear-end of the horse is.

Physical Attractiveness: 1 If I were rating for a transgender attractiveness, I would award high points. But since he makes an attractive woman, I must regretfully award low points.
Personality: 4 I’m certainly curious as to who this person is, but my curiosity is tempered by feelings of rivalry - he is a prettier girl than me.
Technical: 4 The underlying structure of a very strong illustration here, but it needs to be finished. The perspective in particular needs to be revised.

Physical Attractiveness: 7 He doesn’t have abs of steel, but he looks well-groomed, and . . .heck, I’ve got a thing for bare feet.
Personality: 10 who is this brooding autumn fellow? Whoever he is, he’s introspective. He’s not posing for the camera, but has been caught in a private moment. His mood is illustrated by the environment as well as his pose.
Technical: 9 The rendering could be pushed a little farther on the figure and on that one distant sand-dune-smudge on the left. But aside from that, this is a very effective and well-put-together composition. The border and that ripple of cloth are both sheer candy. Nicely done!
Total: 26
#16
Physical Attractiveness: 8 Someone once pointed out to me that emotion in figures is centered first in the face, then in the hands, then in the feet. Despite that patchy, beat-up ugly mug, this guy has it goin’ on, and it’s the hands that do it. If his hands can look that good, then I’m willing to bet the rest of him looks nice, too.
Personality: 10 Here’s a tough guy who lost a fight and he’s telling it all to an itty-bitty dog. I’m willing to bet that he was the protagonist in whatever went down. He lost the fight, but hey, that’s life sometimes, ya know? He has a good attitude.
Technical: 10 Clean, elegant lines, funky textures, well-used color, strong composition, good story-telling. I’m swooning!
Total: 28
#17
Physical Attractiveness: 6 He’s got a rumpled sexy look going on. The hand on the left seems crooked in a painful way, but otherwise this fellow seems healthy and active. Killing ninjas does keep one fit.
Personality: 5 The English text gave me a chuckle. I wish I could read Korean – perhaps that explains the strange stuffed dinosaur-thing? As for the guy. . . is he a hunter of ninjas? He looks like a bit of a ninja himself. Hot ninja-on-ninja action?
Technical: 7 Was this done in a combination of watercolors and digital? There seems to be a complex story being told here, but it seems to be getting lost in translation.
Total: 18
#18
Physical Attractiveness: 7 Here’s a decently-muscled guy. He seems healthy enough, despite the tail. How nice of him to sit around nude for us ladies to eyeball.
Personality: 8 He’s buck naked and playing a flute in a stream. *giggle*
Technical: 7 Compositionally, this is a lot of fun. I wish that the art-nouveau curves of the tail and red ribbon had been carried over more into the man’s anatomy, which is a little stumpy by comparison. The unfinished state of his hands seem like a lost opportunity for finish and expressiveness, and there’s an optical illusion around the end of his flute that sometimes makes it appear to be jammed inside of his mouth. The whole landscape around him could be pushed towards a more finished state.

Physical Attractiveness: 8 The only thing keeping this guy from winning a Mr. Hot Body award is the rendering.
Personality: 5 It’s hard to put a character in a sexy pose that doesn’t also make them seem cocky. This guy strikes me as cocky, and with the combination of that attitude and the gun he carries, I find that to be difficult to move on from.
Technical: 7 It’s the rendering that’s keeping this image from being all that it can be. The composition is decent enough. The background is empty, but it can get away with being empty. They guy – cocky or not cocky, either way he is interesting. But the hands could have been more sensitively portrayed, and all of the surfaces are wanting to be pushed to the next level of finish.

Physical Attractiveness: 9 Yum! The only way I could see this fellow improved physically is a bit of shine to his skin.
Personality: 6 Woah, man for sale! I’m afraid I am weirded out by the story that is being told here. This guy is being sold, or he is a prisoner; either way I feel to sympathetic for him to be turned on by his hot body and cute loincloth. He is not on display voluntarily. I feel embarrassed at being one of the women in the crowd.
Technical: 10 This is a very polished and well-considered painting style. It’s clean and simple. This is a solid composition that manages to be iconic without being boring. Good use of color. There’s a little confusion with the shadows on his face making his head look transparent. But that’s balanced by bonus points for sensitively-rendered hands and feet!

Physical Attractiveness: 10 Yowza! That shiny, sculpted chest, is, um, yeah, that’s hot stuff. Very nice arm. The hands could be better, but, um, I’m too busy looking at his chest and arm to notice.
Personality: 10 Naughty!
Technical: 9 This is a good example of a sketchy art style that helps, rather than hinders the communication of anatomy. I’m taking a point off for that strangely-shaped upper hand, but otherwise. . . yoiks! Nice spare composition, good choice of where to leave out detail, and nice use of very little color.
Total: 29
#22
Physical Attractiveness: 7 This fellow’s physical attributes are very nice. Some shine on his skin could bring him to the next level.
Personality: 9 I’m less interested in his job, and more interested in this guy’s face. He’s a real person, not a generic hunk.
Technical: 5 It’s everything apart from the character that’s holding this image back. The environment and composition are just not finished and not well-planned. I would love to see this guy transplanted into a simpler image and with his clothes and props tidied up to suit him better.
Total: 21
#23
Physical Attractiveness: 5 Seeing as this fellow could almost be my grandfather, I have to put myself in a mindset of a few decades older to consider him as being physically attractive. But since he’s out hunting, he’s obviously in decent physical shape, at least. I find myself wondering what he would look like if he let his hair gray naturally.
Personality: 8 He’s sharp-eyed and dignified. He is a real person, not an icon. Between the gun and the massive chain-sawed stump, I get the feeling that this guy is the sort who is into dominating nature; and the fact that he is sitting on the stump instead of standing triumphantly adds a touch of couch-potato to the scene.
Technical: 7 I get the feeling this is drawn directly from a photograph, and I hope the fellow is pleased at the portrait he got for Christmas – it’s a good portrait of an individual. The rendering is strongest on his jacket and skin, and weakest on the tree-bark and foliage. The colors are okay – but could be enhanced by some dramatic dappling of sunlight.
Total: 20
#24
Physical Attractiveness: 5 A valiant attempt was made to make this guy look muscled and sexy! However, the result is that he looks like a plastic action figure, complete with deep gouges. If those cuts were in flesh, this guy would be covered in sheets of blood.
Personality: 5 He gets points for going in to rescue the lady from Mr. Chainsaw. Aside from that, there’s not much here to tell me about his personality.
Technical: 6 Aside from the issues with the rendering of his skin, there are perspective problems, and parts of the picture (such as the edge of Mr. Chainsaw’s arm) are unfinished-looking. The lighting is drab. But bonus points for successfully telling a complex story!
Total: 16
#25
Physical Attractiveness: 10 Topless male human, topless male alien, and bonus! Two nudes, front and back!
Personality: 10 OMG LOL! What can I say – the dude has a pink bunny hat! And he’s a dad! I don’t at all get what’s going on here, but I am so very intrigued.
Technical: 10 This style is beautifully used, tidy, and fun to look at. Fun, busy composition. Interesting story, whatever it is. Fun colors. Purple shadows on skin? I’ve never before encountered shadows that were humorous. This is awesome.
Total: 30
#26
Physical Attractiveness: 6 I can’t see enough of him to give him a higher score, but the fact that he is a ninja counts for something.
Personality: 6 He’s a ninja, and he is protecting someone. That’s a good start, but it doesn’t leave me any other clues as to what this guy might be like otherwise.
Technical: 7 The grass and the path are the highlights of this image. Bamboo usually grows in dense clumps. The story-telling is clear, and the expression on the woman’s face was done very well. Compositionally it works well. The way the colors are handled, I could see this image being stylistically pushed to look like a Japanese woodblock print; however it currently seems unsure of which way it is trying to go.
Total: 19
#27
Physical Attractiveness: 8 You’ve made Santa look about as attractive as he can get. I’m impressed. The knees and calves are particularly lovely.
Personality: 10 Dude! Santa pron! Fantabulous!
Technical: 10 I have to complain that his hands could be drawn with more sensitivity, and that the skin-tone of his head doesn’t quite match the rest of him. But everything else about this image has been done so well that I have to give it a full score. This is a gorgeous parody.
Total: 28
#28
Physical Attractiveness: 7 This soccer player is obviously fit, but the technical rendering is holding back his attractiveness. He has an interesting and somewhat attractive face.
Personality: 5 All that I can tell about this guy is that he plays soccer. His expression is very neutral. If he were looking at the viewer, he would be more interesting.
Technical: 5 This looks like it was done with oil pastel, perhaps? Bonus points for working in a difficult medium. However, the lighting is so diffuse that it does nothing to show off his form. The composition is okay, but could be improved by the addition of other shapes around the figure, and by breaking up the line that slices through horizontally.
Total: 17
#29
Physical Attractiveness: 5 The skateboarder is obviously in shape, but the rendering of his anatomy is holding him back.
Personality: 5 Aside from being a skateboarder, there are no clues in his expression or elsewhere to tell me anything about this guy’s personality.
Technical: 5 The wall is in perspective, mostly, but the skateboarder is not, which indicates that either a mistake was made in foreshortening, or he is about to fall on me. His anatomy is vague and lumpy in places, particularly around his hands. Both the colors and composition could be improved.
Total: 15
#30
Physical Attractiveness: 2 Aside from the technical things which are interfering here, this satyr doesn’t have enough attractive human bits to make up for the non-human bits. His skin is gray, his hair is pink, and he looks like he needs a bath and a good meal.
Personality: 6 He’s a fawn with an introspective expression and pose. I’m curious. He is interesting, albeit in a brooding way.
Technical: 4 There really is an interesting character here, but layers of technical trouble are holding him back. Reflections off of the canvas are the most obvious problem. Then there is trouble with the medium – I don’t know if it is acrylic or oil, but everything has the muddy characteristics of inexperience with the medium.

Physical Attractiveness: 7 Not bad. . . this soldier is healthy and muscular. You don’t get to wear pants like that if you’re not in shape, not that I’m left guessing at what sort of shape he’s in. And he has a nice face. His hands aren’t quite up to the quality of his face.
Personality: 7 This fellow comes closer than any of the rest to having that pouty/sexy male-model expression. There’s not much of a story being told in his expression; it’s just carefully neutral in a way that lets you read into it whatever you want to read into it. Considering that what women want n this fellow is going to differ from one woman to the next, that’s a safe strategy.
Technical: 7 Obviously the most time was spent on his face and body, while the least was spent on the wall. The highlight of the image are the subtle colors in his skin, and the soft manner that they were used. I wish the same care had been taken with the entire image. Lighting-wise, while this fellow is being lit with a very diffuse light, he is casting an inconsistently hard-edged shadow. The composition is plain; the color-usage is good.
Total: 21
#32
Physical Attractiveness: 7 He’s a bit more old and gaunt than I prefer in a man, but he is thin and apparently has a good diet. Judging by the hair and ear-ring, he wants to appear attractive – and he’s not doing such a bad job. He seems to have good taste in clothing but he has run into some sort of difficulty that has left his expensive wardrobe in a shabby state.
Personality: 10 hello! This guy has “interesting” written all over him. He seems to have fallen on hard times, but it’s not getting him down. He certainly is a lady-chaser. I bet he’s a great conversationalist and good in the sack, too.
Technical: 5 I want to see this one finished! It has the makings of a very strong illustration: good story-telling, good composition. Now it just needs light and color.
Total: 22
#33
Physical Attractiveness: 9 Naked elf! Hawt! One technicality is bringing him down a bit – I am not convinced that his admittedly cute bottom should be turned the way it is. From his silhouette, it looks like his tush should be perfectly sideways to the camera. The physical features of his face are gorgeous. He has feminine features without being too feminine.
Personality: 7 I don’t know much about him from this image. However, the blank pouty model expression goes a long way – it’s a sort of fill-in-the-blank for emotional state.
Technical: 6 The colors are nice, the diffuse lighting works well, the rendering of this guy’s skin is nice. I particularly like the way his lower leg and ankle were handled – very painterly; lots of information given in just a few strokes. But there are some frustrating compositional things going on here. The dinosaur’s head is cut off behind a much less interesting vine. There are tangents at the elf’s head and foot, and the dinosaur’s claw. The dinosaur itself looks stiff and unrealistic. And the elf’s hands and vague toes seem like missed opportunities to express something further.

Alrighty guys , here it is. I did the best I could. I m not as erudite as Seedling. And I usually just went with my gut reaction. I love you all thanks you for allowing me to judge and comment on your work, I am totally honoured for the opportunity.. See you on the boards!
#01 Expressive painting, although it has a certain unfinished quality to it. The composition and color handling are interesting.Im certainly not attracted to the subject. Passed out ..ew nothing sexi about that.looks like he’d have bad breath
Art Factor--- 6
Hotness factor---2
#02 Also looks unfinished, and there is something anatomically odd about the head and neck. I suspect to see behind you like that would require more twist to the torso. Nice Ass
AF---4
HF---6
#3 This is where it gets difficult as one needs to compare style and style, The figure is a nicely finished cartoon. The texture in the ground is confusing in a flat inked style and the figure is floating above the background. Character-wise the guy is repellent, closed attitude hidden eyes and body tension.
AF---6
HF ---3
#4 Nicely rendered beautifully muscled, I still have the feeling its not rendered to the artists full ability. The forehead looks a little low and the hips and shoulders don’t quite line up…there would be a bit more flex in the torso I think. This Guy has an untouchable god-like physique and distant closed unapproachable eyes. But the Bod is yummy. I think this should go in for a warm month. May
AF—8
HF—8
#5 Im betting you thought the image was such that we wouldn’t actually look. The texture on the penis is a strange contrast to the drawing style of the rest. Although you may have painted this it has some interesting qualities of a pastel drawing. The anatomy is plausible. I am impelled to point out, this is not the sexiest part of a guy, in general.
AF—7
HF—3
#6 Hm… interesting idea. Thanksgivings revenge. The composition is very centered static and the colors are odd Have you calibrated your monitor recently? There are a couple small anatomy issues. (and costuming choices..I have to say something about costuming..its my job)
AF 6
HF- 2
#7 Quickly drawn, with neck problems. Something interesting really could have been done with the multiple views of interesting corners of the body. The coloration is romantic but the body language is not. I think this has way more possibilities to explore.
AF 2
HF 3
#8 Looks like a tarot card, well drawn and a nice integration of graphic elements and shaded rounded form. I prefer eyes with eyes in em personally.. but maybe that’s just me. Sort of an anti Valentine..lets put him in for February
AF—9
HF—8
#9 Lots of emotion and a nice physique. A little on the emo/angry side for my taste. But very expressive. Don’tthink Id want to look at him for a month, but the composition is nice and the render is ok.
AF 7
HF 6
#10 just a bod, you totally missed the opportunity to utilize the sexiest parts of a guy; eyes, hands, mouth. Torsos are nice, and this one is shapely. But there is nothing really drawing me into the painting, compositionally or contextually.
AF 5
HF 5
#11 this is totally about the idea, strong , competent, outdoors. Brave of you to use WC, they are really hard to handle. There are a few anatomy issues the torso seems long and the head seems small and the hip angle doesn’t match the leg angle. I love the wholesome airy feeling of this.
AF 5
HF 6
#12 wintery, ….one thing bothering me…how did he get there?...no footprints. ( a silly thing, I know) This seems stylized like a kids book illustration. The composition is excellent. And the blockyness of the style goes well with the primary color scheme. Looks like January, to me. Got a lower Hotness rating cause you can’t see the guy really at all except his eyes and face
AF 8
HF 5
#13 Funny…. Um ..where is the back half of that horse? I truly don’t know what to say. As joke it’s funny, as a painting its competent but not exciting. As a hot dude… um no, I think Cigarettes are nasty, but then its meant as satire so…. I m thinking March. When nothing else is happening
AF 8
HF 3
#14 well rendered although the pose is off balance. The choice of image is a weird amalgam of traits. Doesn’t particularly appeal to me, It might to some. The commonest response is WTF? On a side note, the sink is out of perspective, ovals are difficult. Visually there is something skewed about the room. Of course it makes me very curious as to who this is and what he might be thinking about.
AF 7
HF 2
#15 This one seems like it is trying to appeal to women. It’s a sensitive guy, with a hot physique contemplating nature. Drawn well. I feel like Im being manipulated. April
AF 7
HF 7
#16 I like this one a lot. Im not sure why. He’s scruffy beatup and smoking. I like the style of it and the “awwwww” factor of the dog. I find the multiple textures to be a little distracting. September maybe?
AF- 7
HF6
#17 I feel like I’m missing something, what’s with the Ninja, and anti-ninja factors? This Painting carries out and portrays a concept really well. Im not sure it is the concept behind this competition. I don’t find it particularly appealing. But then I’m fairly anti violence.
AF 8
HF3
#18 This one makes me smile. It appeals to so many things I find totally Hot. The naked in nature and comfortable with it part. It’s a beautiful body. There is a slight computer-paint blurriness to it like it wasn’t quite done, and the tail doesn’t come out of the base of the spine quite right (but it’s a sexeh tail). This is July for sure
AF 9
HF 10
#19 Totally Hot (well except the gun…why a gun damnit?) beautifully rendered. Totally August
AF 10
HF 9 (I don’t like guns)
#20 Well drawn..Im afraid I find the whole idea of slavery repellent. Made it hard to look at this one dispassionately. It looks a bit desaturated on the top and all in all could use a bit more color “punch” to go with the power of the subject matter. Nice bod though…
AF 7
HF 5
#21 Yeah, devilish smile, sexeh. Effective and lively drawing brimming with personality. October for Halloween
AF 7
HF 10
#22 Some anatomy issues, and a certain unfinished quality about the background. The legs and hip angle in particular. If the rest were brought up to the level of the torso it would be more successful
AF3
HF 4
#23 What were you thinking? Is a really nice portrait. On of the best paintings here. But Pin-up? And what is it about guns?
The composition is excellent, the value structure is a little muted
AF 9
HF2
#24 Again the violence makes it hard for me to look at this oneand the helpless woman stereotype irritates me. The composition is odd with the unbroken heavy dark line. Nice physique.
AF 5
HF 7
#25 Huh? I keep looking at it trying to figure it all out. Good style and color good composition, The dudes right hand is a little odd. But I don’t get it. The alien is better built…..
AF 7
HF 3
#26 Is there a figure under there? Is it male? And why must the female always be protected/saved? Ok end rant. Art wise I would like to see the colors working together better each figure has its own local color and that color doesn’t interact with the other light and color on the page. Compositionally it is very one sided with the front foot going directly out of the corner of the page.
AF 5
HF 2
#27 Very fun, very well done ..the grls calendar in the corner is a hoot. I like his confindence . made me laugh. December
AF10
HF 7.. ok he’s and old guy but HE thinks he’s hot….
#28 The texture keeps bugging me The drawing style is a bit sketchy but in the abstract this is a nice looking guy. November
AF 5
HF 6
#29 Very alive drawing and very lively drawing style. Cute guy in action. Wish it were a little more polished. June
#30 This looks like a great painting…. What I can see of it. The photoglare is so rough I can’t really view it well enough to comment. Wish I could. It coulda been a contender.

How I enjoy reading crtis and comments like this!!!! It's fun and knowledge and conversation and people being so open and sincere.
Wonderful critique, Nellie, I smiled less reading yours, because I was agreeing with most of them, and for me they were very good and right observations.
Satyr playing flute has a very peculiar expression of his face, sly and sweet and seductive, great catch, not often I see this fine emotion in images.

As a man comfortable in my sexuality, I can say that I can see how a man could be attractive. To be blunt many of the men in this thread I can't see them doing too well at the bars. Some might do alright at the gay bars, but mostly a lot of them looked scary, just not in a sexy way. Don't get me wrong, not all, several were great, really good.
I think the big difference between the male and female pinup calendar that I picked up on was the artist not being comfortable. Overcompensating, making their men badass, instead of just fit and healthy and charming. Making them tough takes them out of the gay category I suppose. Although I've known some tough gay men.
The women were much more comfortable with their subject matter.
I'm reminded of a topic that doesn't get a lot of press but I find interesting. Male self-image and self-esteem. People very often talk about the unrealistic pressures and image of women in pop culture and how it affects women's self-image. Well the same is just as true for men. Yes, just as true. Men don't complain about it or talk about it, because that's part of it. Got to be stoic, stiff upper lip and all.
An interesting study polled several hundred college age men. Describe the ideal physcial appearance of a man. Nearly every guy described someone taller, about 20-30lbs more muscle than they themselves had, more definition etc. While the same poll about Men's appearance was given to just as many college age women. The women said they preferred men 20-30lbs less muscle than the boys described. Women wanted the appearance that the men already had. The same could be said about women, men don't necessarily want an aerobics instructor, curves on a woman are quite alright in my humble opinion. There is no one type that trumps any other body type, and the same probably holds true for women who are attracted to men. The common denominator most can relate to is someone who is confident, healthy, and takes care of themselves is attractive.
Sorry for the rant, it's just what went through my head after seeing this thread.
Laters,
Chris

Another reason for the women being more comfortable in their subject matter is the fact that traditionally pin-ups involve females. The concept of a pin-up is a feminine idea that doesn't translate perfectly. The guys just didn't seem to know what a guy pin-up would look like in the first place. When I think of a male pin-up, I think of those magazines for preteen girls with pictures of boy bands. That doesn't appeal to me, and I didn't think it would appeal to many of the judges. I don't think it was so much sexual insecurity (although there was some of that, we had to be fairly secure to sign up for this in the first place), as it was the difficulty and confusion inherent in the topic.
The challenge for me was figuring out what a male equivalent of a pin-up is. My entry in particular was meant more to play with that idea, rather than focusing on making sexy eye candy (although I thought my guy was fairly attractive, the judges don't seem to agree so far). Female pin-ups emphasize and glamourize femininity, so I figured the male version should emphasize and glamourize masculinity. It creates a different set of criteria.
Once again, thanks to the judges and everyone writing crits! You girls rock!

Virus artist, it was fun to guess yours. Beautiful entry, gorgeous, hehe did I erase the evil grin? :).
Xenos, man, you are sly one. you're so diverse!
Hurri, I'm so glad I was wrong about yours. 18. It was the hardest to guess and it is beautiful because of the face especially and gentle brush strokes. it looks different from yours, I should have paid attention to the graphic elements done in so different style from the rest of the picture, it was a major clue... but the rest is so unrecognizable. Bravo! That's a wonderful quality in my opinion. One of the most mysterious entry and I loved it.

It was a line art, and your favorite manner to compose picture, triangle-like, and faces and theme, and orange red favorite color of yours, and knuckles of fingers and highlights on them. and expression of the face reminded me your evil grin :D from one of your photo which I liked very much and it is not in the Lounge photo section anymore.
But it was a surprise when I finally had an understanding of all this. Pretty different from Alexandr Nevsky.
