Teen Challenge #22: Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline, and any medium (sans photograghy) is allowed.
Your entry may include a brief description if you like.
Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Character + Mount: Horseman of the Apocalypse
This week's theme is to create an interpretion of one of the four catastrophic horsemen described in the book of Revelations. If you're not familiar with the Biblical apocalypse, you can read all about them [here] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse). Choose one of the following traditional interpretations to base your horseman on:

Conquest
War
Pestilence
Famine
Death

Please choose and render only one for your final; requiring all four would be too much for one challenge, and out of fairness, the entries will likely be more balanced if each contains only one character/mount design. Though descriptions are allowed, try to make it fairly obvious within the image which of the destructive powers your character is meant to represent.

Also, this topic is going to be fairly open to interpretation; while you're free to base your design directly off the Biblical descriptions, you're also free to interpret the characters in a more modernized or even futuristic way. Despite the wording of the topic, your character's mount does not necessarily have to be a horse; it could be some sort of vehicle or mechanical mount, or possibly some other animal. Likewise, the rider can be male or female. Just keep in mind which traditional horseman you're basing it on, and be sure to make the motif of that horseman apparent.

Yer, the 4 actual horseman are only described in colour and actions form the book of revelations and interpretation such as war and death came after i think. For insytance i see war and conquest as the same horse (red with the sword) and famine and death as the pale horse.

Yes, there are only four, but the names of those four changes depending on translation and interpretation. Conquest is not one of the four horsemen in most modern pop-culture interpretations, but in the biblical text it's actually one of the more clearly defined;

"And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer."

In some interpretations, the horseman of Conquest is in fact the Antichrist himself. Pestilence is actually the one not distinctly referenced in the original text, although it could be assumed that Pestilence is interchangable with Death. But rather than limit the options to a single set of interpretations, I think all of them are rather suitable for this challenge.

is my inital thoughts on the challenge. Originally i thought of doing the red horse all intiidating (top right) but then i started liking the idea of a creepy pale horse of death.

was watching some hogfather on sky one ( fairly impressed actually) and death on that is cool so that sorta steered me while i was drawing. Whole page is sorta a unconcious dribble while i was watchin TV actually.

So tomorrow im gonna get some refs of horses and such to fix any anatomy probs nad then start the paint.

evil sloth i like the overall quallity and substance to your picture but is the horse meant to be floating? i dno... mebe its mena be flying which makes more sense to me... good look anyways everybody

Death might be a lil harder but pestilance means annoying right? so im sure the crazy frog or something would fit?

Hey Goog i think you should leave the white crosses resembling the horses eyes away and replace with something else.
The way the rider is shaded, the way the horses legs fade away and the birds are very nicely done, but the eyes of that horse make him look like a fainted pikachu xD

Actually, I remeber why I did that. It was like 12 at night and I had been trying to figure out what to do for the eyes for about an hour so I just put x's...everything else just doesn't look right...maybe some more fiddling...

The rider of the second horse is generally held to represent War. The red color of his horse represents blood spilled on the battlefield. He carries a great sword, which represents battle and fighting. The Red Horse is also said to represent the Planet Mars. It is red because it is rich in iron oxide, more so than the Earth. According to astrological beliefs, Mars has quite an ill effect on the Earth when its position is behind us to the Sun, especially when the Moon, The Pale Horse, is between Mars and the Earth. The red planet also represents the God of War in many pre-Christian religions.

@WolfBane: The colored version is much better imho, those cool graish tones are complimenting the reds very good, great work! however... I belive the rules of this "contest" aka thunderdome was very clear.. and Evil_Sloth have broken em anyways.

@ Sung-jae Kim, yeah just look at some reference thats the best way to go about it. to me though it looks like all the musculature need s to be more clearly defined. a horses back kind of dips in the middle. i like the pose/angle of the head better in the greenish one.

Hey thanks for letting me know your thoughts dudes, lovin the work that is being produced. Yeah I did use a lot of photo's for ref and stuff. I've spent the first two years of drawing not even looking at refs because I thought it was cheating so now that I'm experimenting with combined techiques, hopefully if I practice enough I can make some cool shit.
Anyway if you feel that using matte with my pics isn't cool maybe a pure pencil teen challenge next round?

Hmm, changing the rules just because of one single entry, day before the deadline, isn't exactly the most appropriate thing to do imo. Anyhow, you run the TD, it's your decision. :hatsoff:

Hey guys, sorry I'm late submitting this, but because I live in Indonesia and because of the earthquake in taiwan, internet servers broke down so I couldn't connect much to the internet.

All of your entries are looking fabolous, and for me I just discovered this "teen challenge thing", so I decided to enter.

My horse man is war, and I decided to make him a her. According to the wikipedia site, war shows intimacy, so I decided to show some independant intimacy within the rider. I think i kinda forgot about the specific rider rule, so I got a bit carried away.I kinda also did a landscape, an image as whole, but I'll post in some deep resolution shots.
