Been awhile, I figured I ought to get around to uploading some stuff. Some FFG, cards mostly, and a couple more declassified WoW at the bottom. All oils on board

love the second one.

these are all very well painted, but some of the designs are pretty weak. they're a bit vanilla.

These are pretty ballin', Dave, especially the first and second ones. That first hammer piece I could see as a Thor cover. I would agree that your compositions could be a bit stronger, and you need to watch some of your angles, especially in the 5th and 6th ones, and the circle on the hammer in the 1st one. sweet post, keep em coming.

OH SNAP!

Dumbledore is drowning Harry! (3rd one) Heh ^ ^

I like the 2nd the best. There is an N.C. Wyeth piece where he has to guys on horses fighting and the background has some nice light rays that really pushes the dynamics. I think something like that could make your 2nd piece have a lot of power. Btw his cape is extra neat.

edit: just found the image and attached it. It's perhaps a little less apparent than I remembered. Maybe there is another I'm thinking of...

That image of the warrior in yellow on the horse has great energy Dave! Thanks for sharing.

I think everyone's going to pick that second one as their favorite. I do :) I wish there was more of a sense of atmosphere or fog of war to help separate things spatially, but it's still a very nice piece of work.

Your work is all-around solid, Dave. The images look like they reduce nicely for cards, and you're not taking any shortcuts in your growth as an artist. Very professional.

Hey Dave, nice to see you post. The first and second painting are my favorite. The second has a really great composition, one of your best I would say. I really enjoy looking at it. :) I think in most of your paintings you lack a sense of detail, maybe pattern or texture. Like for instence if you put some engraved pattern on the horses armor, just one example. The 3-6 ones seems like you didn't put much time into it. I could see you going back and finishing them up a bit. Good job overall Dave, and I know how fast you paint so you probably pooped these out in like a day or two. Add a few more days to put those nice details in your paintings, and your golden. ;)

ps. the detail in the first knight's armor is awesome.

Awesome, I too, am thoroughly enjoying the second one (as well as the first hammer one! It makes me think "Shatter Artifact" a la MTG style :d). I think the first one would improve by 100% if you were to desaturate the distant land. Right now the painting is teetering on the brink of "almost epic but not quite" simply because the uniform colour in the bg gives a more closed look. I really think the first would be my favourite but for that :)!

Great work!

nephilim - yeah, something I do feel I need to work at is punchier/more dynamic comps. And so I shall be
Mr. Visions - thanks, and yeah that hammer does look a little wonky. I think I was much happier with it when I painted it (like a frickin year ago, damn you WoW!)
JoshuaTheJames - I'm a huge NC fan and i don't believe I've seen this one before. Aaaand, I just wet myself. And now I'm in tears. Schooled by the master, once again.
Interceptor - thanks, getting more action has become a priority lately
OBX - something every illustrator likes to hear :)
theincredibleandy - thanks man, I really got into that one. That was the first time I ever had to paint a man riding a horse, which I thought was actually really fun (nowhere near the nightmare I expected)
Atlantis - yeah, both for World of Warcraft tcg weapon cards. Of the five hammers I did (?) these two just happen to have similar concepts and compositions I suppose.
poise - guilty, I believe I was in level three crunch time that week. I know it's no excuse. Once I get back into regular mode (still in level one crunch time) I might revisit them. You and my mom, always after me about more detail! (I know you're both right)
JenZee - I think I'm going to do some photoshop post work there and see how she turns out

hey dave, good work as usual.

don´t know if it is already mentioned, but in your first pic it seems to me more like the riders were growing than coming closer. it´s because the green of the grass doesn´t show any perspective in color or lightening.

also i think (in the under-water-white-hair-man pic) the arm looks a little too soft and female for an old man (or is it just me...?)

great rendering!

nice!
i don't think it's primarly the comps, i kinda think the colors and lightning are a tad "vanilla" here.

Dave--

Great stuff. You really nailed the second one compositionally. Some great linear devices to move your eye around, and a wonderful sense of action.

I really want to like the first one, but it feels too much like cardboard cutouts to me rather than the sweeping epic scene you want it to be. It has a lot to do with the lack of perspective-- atmospheric, espcecially, but to a lesser degree linear. Your three main figures, which give a sense of scale, all have been chopped off at the bottom of the pic, and their spacial relationship doesn't seem to fit with what should be the perspective (I realize we're looking downhill at them, but showing the hill would have helped that read better).

The underwater scene has a great feel to it-- just needs a little tightening up in the hands.

Next two are rather blah for me. Not a whole lot of "story" to them-- no real emotion in the characters' faces, and not a lot in the background to get me really interested in the image.

Love the burial scene, though I wish it was a little tighter, and the hammers are both great, simple card images.

Glad to see you're still cranking out a metric assload of work. It's a kick in the teeth every time I see this much production from you. ;)

actually i thought most of your compositions were fine, and in the case of the 2nd one, really good.

i was talking about the designs of the characters, like their clothing and armor and such. i think spending some more time would really crank these up.

Yeah, and I think the horse also thinks "why must he have painted me in total front view!?" ;-)
Not so happy to choose the front view I think - but whatever - your second picture and the under water one make definitely up for this.
good work!

Hi,

The only thing that really poked me in the eye is the swordsman with the blanket. There's something wrong there with proportions and perspective i believe.

But i relly dig everything else. Good job as usual.

hey dave,

these look great.
really great considering they are for cards.
i bet they are going to look sharp shrunk down.

the only things that stuck out to me are:

in #6, it looks like the guy is pulling on a sleeping bag.
it took me a long time to figure out what was going on.

in #7, there appears to be more debris than there was floor.
watch that. (ie. if we took all those pieces and reassembled it, there would be far too many)
i only noticed because i've this before too.

otherwise, looking good.
like everyone said, #2 is sensational.
